New Computer

Hi all,
I am planning to purchase a new desktop computer for our home office with a budget around $1000. Below are the parts that i've selected from Umart which comes up to $1040.
I would really appreciate if you could suggest better parts that could perform better or similar with lower cost.
Also, could you please recommend a small case that could fit the system.
Thanks in advance.

what will you be using the computer for? If it's just office work, you won't need the 8GB RAM and graphics card, you could replace those with an SSD or lower your spending

1: Any i3 or even Pentium is fine for office work.

2: Get a H81 motherboard, just as fast and cheaper.

3: 4G of memory is enough generally, but if you are a heavy user 8 is OK.

4: Video card isn't required at all. The standard GPU in any Intel CPU will do all video and work tasks just fine.

5: SSD will help a lot, much more importand than CPU, Motherboard, Memory or video card.

Generally speaking your budget is excessive.

    • Thanks Bruce.

If i delete the video card, will it be a problem to connect the 27 inch monitor?

    • I agree, but I'd say that 8GB of RAM is almost a must these days unless you're going for a budget build.

Graphics card is unnecessary, but you might find that you need a H87 motherboard, they are more fully featured with respect to RAM slots, PCIe expansion, USB, SATA…etc. They may not actually affect performance but they are things you may need.

Also yes, SSD is the best upgrade you can make. Just to put it into perspective for day-to-day office tasks, a Pentium with an SSD will seem much faster than an i7 with a slow hard drive.

  • would be able help you more if we know what the build is going to be used for

  • Don't get a junk H81 board. They are stripped of everything from features to ports to CPU phases. I'd also drop the GPU, its not required, and keep the i5. The i3 is a rip off and a poky Pentium won't last as long as an i5 if you want a decent all rounder. You also need a SSD and a real proper PSU. Just because its an office box doesn't mean you go for a slow dual core and rubbish $60 mobo.

  • Thanks for your comments guys. I will most probably delete the graphic card and put in an ssd. I may change the mother board and cpu too.
Could you pls recommend a good small casing to fit the parts? The smaller the casing the better as space saving is crucial at the moment. Thx

  • Hi
I could add to the growing list of advice , parts what to get etc. But I'm only going to suggest to the OP that he contacts Shopping Express re his needs; on their site they have a number of systems at around that price point and as they are professional in their support, knowledge and service. I think he may do well with a custom built system.

I think we should support the regular Ozbargain suppliers as much as possible

    • Is it time for the paid shills to pop out now?

      • I'm not paid or otherwise ethereal88

Just have had exceptional service and goods from Shopping Express, and I do believe in supporting major vendors on here.

    • Thanks. Will check it out.
