Quality firm mattress for under $1200

Hi OzBargainers!

I am looking for a new firm queen-size mattress to replace an old AJ Beard (King Coil) bed which has become uneven.

I do not need a base, just the mattress. The main requirements are quality and longevity, without going into skyhigh prices. I also do not need a high pillow-top as I have a removable egg-foam topper from Clark Rubber and also a wool underlay.

So far my personal choice is the Sealy Elements Firm, which retails at Forty Winks for $1899 but is currently on special for $1199. It boasts qualities such as titanium-alloy springs, firm side support, 10 year guarantee etc.

One difficulty with getting the best price around the traps is that each retailer seems to have special custom beds, and though I can find other Sealy, I may not be able to find the exact same bed elsewhere for 1:1 pricing.

Any thoughts or sensible contributions are truly appreciated. Thank you.

  • Check out www.furnish.com.au

I bought their Posture Care mattress for $599.

I was originally looking at spending around 1k-2k for a mattress but i came across the posture care mattress which had exactly all the features that the other mattresses i was looking at had. The only difference being the brand.

The one i personally got was Medium & the posture care mattresses come with 5 zone back support & has pocket springs. Maybe have a look & see if they have it in Firm, but the Medium is quite nice.

Ive been sleeping on it for the past 2 weeks & i love it & my back feels a lot better. I bought mine from the Epping store in VIC but i do believe they do delivery.

    Hope that helps.

    • Thank you.

  • What state are you in giggles? I discovered a great mattress place near my house the other day (VIC).

    • I'm in Melbourne, South East suburbs

      • I think the place is called Discount Mattresses or something like that. Located on 60 Brunswick Rd, East Brunswick. Queen size mattresses started from about $99 (old style spring) to just over $1000 for pocket springs. The ones in the $500 range were pretty good.

The guy was saying that they either manufacturer or get their mattresses from the same manufacturer as the ones that are provided to the big name stores. Made in Australia apparently. I don't know much about mattresses but it seemed cheaper than the big name stores. I think the more expensive mattresses had more coils thus made for less "partner disturbance".

Anyway, I was just passing by the place but worth a shot if you are in the area. They have the usual 10 year warranties.

  • I got the ergoflex and it is fairly firm, it was ~$800. They say it is like the tempur but it isn't it is firmer.
I got used to it but it isn't like a tempur. Queen sized.

  • The IKEA sultan range have some firm ones at very good prices. Note the base will make a difference to the sensation of firmness.
