Shitty customer service at Kathmandu

I wanted a camping mat from kathmandu, this one here http://www.kathmandu.com.au/sleeping-gear/mats/self-inflatin… It was advertised as $56 on the boxing day sale ending yesterday.

I was away on a trip yesterday so I asked my boyfriend to go and get it. When he got to the store he asked the store guy for the mat, the guy said oh thats $56. Went to scan it, said oh it scans at $89. So my boyfriend called me and I insisted that it is $56 and not an online only deal. But instead of insisting to the store guy it was $56 he just went home.

So when I got home I checked and it was $56 still, but now its gone off sale today when I could go get it myself.

I am really annoyed at the sale staff, if he had checked the website instead of insisting it wasn't $56 because it "scanned" differently. Plus earlier I went to anaconda and the staff said a sleeping bag I wanted that should have been $80 scanned at $160. But they changed it after I said no its around $80.

Is there any point going back to the store and asking for the mat on the sale price? or should I not bother.

Why do items that have been advertised at a certain price scan much higher? seems dodgy to me.

Well the sale is over, and there is nothing you can do about it. They don't owe you anything. You should have got your boyfriend to show them the price on the website - perhaps on a mobile phone or something.

    • yea thats what I would have done. Or at least insisted they check the website. But I don't understand why he would say its $56 then says it scans $89, when the boxing day sale wasn't over.

      • The employee probably also thought it was $56, maybe he saw it on the advertisement too - but when he went to scan, in their system it showed $89. Your boyfriend should have called for the manager. Maybe you can ring up now and ask to chat to the manager.. Sort it out over the phone.

Empathy with your experience. if I am in your position, i will not blame the sale staff.
Instead, will strengthen shopping training with boyfriend. If still not good enough …. he should go and sort it out without you involved.. It is still on sale, $13.99 more… but better than full price and have you 'shittty'. Happy New Year.

happens regularly nowadays (at other stores).
    stand up for your rights.
    get a meaner/tougher boyfriend.

    • I told him on the phone to tell the staff member it is $56 on the website, but since I couldn't check I thought perhaps the sale had ended.

  • It is advertised at $15 more and it costs $10 more to join the summit club, so around $25 more. Not worth it. I think instead I will get this one http://www.kathmandu.com.au/outlet/sleeping-gear/self-inflat…

but does outlet mean it is in the outlet stores only? I went to the DFO kathmandu and couldn't see the mat I wanted when it was on sale.

    • Oops. Summit Club used to be free to join. Beware the one you are looking at is short, not the same as the regular one you looked at. Only 120 cm in length.

      • Yeah, it's a good two foot shorter.

        • yea I realize it is shorter. But it might be better than nothing. I'm not sure how much colder it would make me, but it might be good enough.

  • I think your boyfriend should have pushed harder and shown them the price, errors happen, sometimes particular stores might forget to mark down items…etc. It's not necessarily their (the salesperson's) fault.

  • The sales staff could have at least told your boyfriend about Summit Club which takes the price down to $69.99.

I shop in Kathmandu quite a bit, customer service there varies. Considering the prices it should be top notch but it's not. Sometimes the staff straight up ignore you and continue chatting away. There have been times when I have actually been offended by the complete lack of shits they seem to give. It felt like a personal insult, the complete ignorance.

    • well that's why he didn't question the price, because he said after he got off the phone with me the sales guy was ignoring him so he just walked off

Yeah. I don't really see why you're annoyed at the sales staff, and I don't think it classifies as 'shitty'. This is the exchange from my POV:

BF: I'd like to buy this for $X.
K: Actually it sells for $Y.
    BF: OK then.

How is that shitty service? I see that it would annoying not to get the camping mat, but how is this really their fault?

Title is misleading. Should read "Shitty shopping effort by boyfriend"

    • lol

  • don't worry, unless you need it right away, sales would pop up soonish.

Mountain Design have something similar in their somnus range.
Last year they had 50% off and I bought one for $65 and another for $50

  • At risk of sounding like a complete b*tch, it is your boyfriend's fault. How was the salesperson to know, and why would they instinctively check the website? ..unless of course, the customer bought up the issue, prompting them to double-check the price.

Ugh. After working in retail for several years, my most hated line is "he/she (employee) charged me X price". I noticed your use of quotation marks for "scanned", as if system errors don't occur. You even said so yourself, the price of an item at Anaconda was altered because you said something. That's how these things work.. I feel sorry for the poor salesperson.

    </end rant>

  • humans make mistakes and systems have errors.

maybe in the future when the world is run by aliens or robots than there would be less errors.

  • Another bargain here. eHarmony - review your match for free today.

  • Noticing this type of scanning incorrect pricing often these days.

My naive part of me says that the staff can't keep track of sales, especially online prices which are suppose to match store prices.

My paranoid part tells me that they intentionally keep store prices different from online, even though the online prices are meant for store as well. I told a JB HIFI staff they had the incorrect price for a TV, $9xx, instead of $739, he confirmed but never changed it.

Online prices trick people to come into the store, but lazy/ignorant people pay higher price.

  • The $56 might've only been on last years stock. Dick smith does this. You go instore and the stock (dick smith brand) is new stock and dearer than the Same item that's online.
