The reviews for these seem pretty good - anyone tried?

    • +3

      pros: cooks as described
cons: small tray to cook with

and i believe theres 2 models one thats older and one thats newer which has one more filter and comes with free baking kit

      • hmm tempting. I will sleep on it. :)
        Thanks OP.

      I bought the Kogan one.

It is far better than what I was expecting.

Fries are similar to oven fries, but the taste, colour, texture is a lot more consistent, not to mention the convenience of it.

I've been eating a lot more potatoes because of this thing.

      • I find oven cooked fries not as tasty as fat fried ones. Do you find this giving a different texture to your oven baked ones?

        • +1

oven ones often give you 1 soggy side and 1 side that is overcooked if you happen to forget turning it over… Plus the annoying thing about having to spread the fries out evenly like a person with pencil arranging OCD (and less fries if your tray surface area is small!!). I like the idea of chucking half a bag (500g) into the cage, slam it in, turn to the cooking time you want, halfway through just take out , shake, slam it back and wait for the ding.

        • Nothing beats a box of deep fried chips and gravy, but this comes a little closer.

It is very evenly cooked, which is why I like this so much better than oven fries.

It doesn't really get soggy as well, but it is a somewhat dry due to no added oil.

One thing bear in mind is that it really is a trial and error process with thing thing… The guide gives you some hints, but you need to adjust it a bit to get better results.

tl;dr - Deep fry is king, this is the next best thing for health conscious people.

I don't know why ppl leave such a good review on this product. The effort to clean the net and dripping oil tray is so painful, ALSO the tray is so small. The commercial on TVSN is full of crap! I am so regret of buying this product.
Advantage: Make food more crispy and taste better than cooking with a microwave.
      Disadvantages: 1. Too small
      2. Hard to clean
      3. Expensive, the halogen light glass cooker is the same thing but not as powerful.

      • Healthy meal!?!? I don't think so, may be slightly healthier but it makes little difference. Heating up chips that has been pre-fried with oil wont make a huge difference.
      • +1

I bought mine from those same TVSN commercials and I couldn't be happier. It's brilliant for a single person and cleaning it is an absolute doddle. Usually I don't even need to put the basket and tray through the dishwasher - paper towels, running water and a dishbrush are all that's needed.

As well as chips (I've only tried frozen ones), crumbed fish fillets, marinated chicken pieces, mixed roast veges (butternut/sweet potato/carrots) and ratatouille (capsicum/zucchini/aubergine/onion), all come up a treat.

      • probably you had too high expectations of this product.

it's just a convection oven that cooks faster than a normal convection oven because of the smaller volume.

having a fit over health is like screaming at a blendtec why its so expensive and still churns out the same orange juice as the george foreman one. ;)

end of the day, i used less/no oil when i cook with the air fryer, compared to a deep fryer or a pan, fact.

got mine at $180 at costco few months back, and still is the same price i last checked 3 days ago.

        • You are right! I had high expectations bc of the chick on TVSN falsely advertised.
          1. She said cleaning was easy and got paper towel and cleaned it=NOT TRUE
          2. Stack food up and cook=partially not true, need to turn the food occasionally, otherwise it is cook uneven if you stack the food up. The tray is so small which makes it becomes a hassle and defeat the purpose of using this.
          3. The cooking time was exaggerated, if it is too high, the food only cook on the outside, (depends on what you are cooking), turn the temp lower=take longer to cook. But yes, it does cook quicker then the convection oven.

The small tray and cleaning is really frustrating, I have to put shit loads of morning fresh and filled it with water and let it soaked it. I had to go and get a dishbrush just to clean this beast.
Hmm, it just defeat the purpose, too little food cooked for so much effort.

I agree with criticisms of the health claim. While you may use less oil, eating frozen chips are not "healthy" no matter how they are cooked. Air fryers are the low tar cigarettes of the chip world (healthier… the ier is what makes it technically true. Marginally healthier than something that is not particularly healthy, which should not be confused with it being healthy in its own right).

        • +2

you don't HAVE to use frozen chips you know…. lol

if you are worried about your own health then it's time to learn how to cook with different ingredients so that you don't eat pre-packaged crap all the time. You know, like taking responsibility for your own body?

Can't understand why all these hating on a tool. Do you blame the car when you drive badly?

        • No one is blaming the tool. I use a deep fryer. What people are doing is criticizing the 'health' claim associated with air fryers. Because it's rubbish.

        • not sure what is your point really. you can dont use oil in air fryers. so what part is itt not healthier than a deep fryer?

        • -1

My point, slowmo, is and only every was that the notion of healthiness should not be associated with this product.

It may have many selling points. It may be the best thing in the world. Heck, it may shit ice cream. But any health claim is dubious at best.

Please return to my low tar cigarette analogy.

  • I've seen these before, not tried one yet.

Is this an elaborate microwave of some sorts?

    • +1

No microwaves involved - it's a fan forced, infra-red griller.

I have one of these, it's incredible. We mostly use it for heating up hot chips but yeah it works in about 15 minutes. It fits in about 800Grams of frozen chips just FYI.

  • +9

Picture looks like what the Mac Pro will become from eating too many hot chips.

  • $180 at Costco Canberra. (Needs membership, and local store yadda yadda). Easy returns though.

thanks bundled this with the $30 off with $120 amex offer
not many left in vic, and no free delivery afaik

It's the HD9225/50 model which comes with a baking tray

Good guys had it for $199 at one point in time
If you search "air fryer" on their website, it shows $199, but once you click through, it comes up as $229

I bought $168 at Harvey Norman on Boxing day. I'm quite sure it can be several dollars cheaper, but this isn't a bad price anyway.

  • bought this, used for 2 weeks and returned. OK if only use for chips, other wise it's a waste of money and effort.
Honestly even the $15 aldi brand conventional oven cooks better than this

    • +2

You used it for two weeks then returned it? The store you got it from has some kickass return policy. Either that or an amazing clean and repackage effort.

    • +1

so far, i did fries (of course), sweet potato fries (not frozen, cut from the real stuff), nuggets, salmon filets (not frozen), fishballs , barramundi filets (not frozen), fish fingers, ikea meatballs, marinated chicken drumletts and wings.

i have a GF turbo oven, and a breville smart oven… which essentially does about the same thing (but messier, especially with marinated meats), but the air fryer does it in under 20-25 mins.

it is excellent for reheating store bought muffins/pasteries or toast bread if you are sufficiently familiar with it.

so yeah, don't blame the tool.

I saw this Philips frier at Myer also. Alongside it was the Tefal Actifryer for $179. Is the Tefal any better?

    • i don't like the idea of something agitating my food while it's cooking…. more moving parts to worry about.

  • I visited a house which recently bought one of these, the spring rolls they made using the fryer were not bad. It is a bit dry I think missing that oil taste if you know what I mean.

    I guess it is healthier.

The tray is a bit small but what can you do.

  • I bought the ALDI one and it hiked up my electricity bills because I love it so much to cook my super yummy springrolls! (Asian style)
