  • Is 10% of the arbitrary prices of a 2nd hand book shop a genuine bargain?

    I'd say no! Simply advertising.

Edit: The new 20% discount is more of a deal!!!

  • +2

Ok. That's a fair point as I was wondering if 10% is too low. This is my first time submitting a deal and I was going to try 10% the first time and then up it to 20% the second. To be honest, as a newbie, I was worried also about the load on my server.

The coupon "ozbargain" is now a 20% off coupon.

Unfortunately it does exclude postage, but we have a pretty good postage deal. Maximum $10.00 per order, even if you order 100 books.

    • I'm someone who is a long time and consistent supporter of Australian 2nd hand bookshops through the likes of http://www.abebooks.com etc.

Rather than a lame blanket discount, I feel a better tactic for you is to have, say, a 25% - 35% discount off certain genres, like for e.g. 'Sports' or 'Science Fiction' or 'Crime' or Non-Fiction' etc, etc, etc on an ongoing and regular basis.

This would mean that every week, or two, or three, you can offer valid discounts off your regular prices for a different section of your store.

It allows you to constantly present a 'selection' of 'genuine bargains' without being accused of spamming.

Check out how many shops on this site already do something like this.

      • Thanks for your comments Horizon. I will consider doing that on selected categories. I initially thought a blanket discount would be better in my case as we mostly only stock one off books as they are all second hand. Most people buy from many different catagories - not just one.

I am sure I will have a lot to consider before I offer a discount here again. There's always better ways to go about things!

    • Any chance of a local pickup and location for those of us in Brisbane?
I agree $10 postage is great if you want lots of books, but a lot if only interested in a couple, particularly if not much over $10 to start.

      • Hi cooperdog.

Local Pickup is available by appointment from Camira :) The option for pickup and payment on pickup is available in the shopping cart.

        • Thanks for that, might be worth putting up on the shipping page on your website

  • I'm here to support my local businesses. Hope you do well. Unfortunately, I find it hard to read books other than comics and magazines. :)

  • Thanks John :) My husband has a few thousand comics.. I wonder if he'd let me sell them!

  • After a quick look through the site at the genre's I'm interested in, the prices seem quite reasonable, if not quite good already. The move to a 20% discount and the rapid response of the vendor speak well of them.

The books are sorted well and plenty of info is given. The only immediate area of improvement I can see would be the selection which seems a bit limited, but I'm sure that will come in time.

Happy to give this a positive!

  • @ Horizon:

I think given the OP's responses you could maybe retract your negative?

    @ OP:

Seems quite good to me and I wish you the best of luck with the shop. I wouldn't complain about seeing maybe a post a week from you.

Fair comment, and I have tried to do that, but don't know how.

Let me know how's it's done, and it will be done.

      Cheers

      • click "votes" in the top right hand corner of this page. It will say "revoke vote" or something to that affect

        • Thanks!

          Just stumbled onto it.

  • I like this website !! however after few hours of research, I found this one even better http://brotherhoodbooks.org.au/browse
I think this one is also an Aussie-base online secondhand bookshop, they have a larger collection and lower price.

The only thing that is not clear to me was the shipping rate (I hope is not too high), I'm gonna write a letter to them and find out.
Will update as soon as they reply

I tried something in my cart — a $2 fiction piece, shipping was $7.70. Same for 2, $8.60 up to 6. (Too lazy to check for more. :P)

Back to original track: While this is a good discount deal, I've just spent a bunch on Bookdep. XD And it also seems like the site is mostly nonfiction, which I don't go for…ah well. :(

    • That site you listed has a terrible organisation system lol I went to browse the fiction section, it displays 1-25 of 4270 books in the category and there's no further sub categories to select from. Left the site after that…

      • I agree with Randomninja

However, I used the search engine to find quite a lot of book i was looking for all along.
Thanks for the info provided by jenkei, I'm gonna make an order now XD ….

btw Ozbookshop does really provides a very good deal, sadly the selection was limited.

  • Unfortunately the selection isn't large. I wish we could build up stock quicker. It takes a lot of time to list the books, as I prefer to scan the cover of each individual book. I think you get a better idea of condition with a second hand book that way. However as RandomNinja said the stock will come in time and we will keep plugging away at it!

The discount is going great! We are already packing the orders and will email everyone after the books have been posted.

Thanks to everyone for your support for this post!

    • Great to hear that !
      Keep up the good work!!

  • Not sure if this was asked earlier but how do you obtain these books? I've got quite a few decent novels I'm keen to pass on :)
