Moved to Forum: Original Link

Netgear ProSafe 8 port gigabit switch for $25. Normally $50 (and cheapest on staticice is about $50).
Still seems to be listed at $50 on the web site but I got an email stating it's 50% off so went into the Morningside store and bought it for $25 this afternoon.

  • I was told the email is incorrect. The contents of the email do not match the header. I rang and was told the Switch was not on special, so dont know how you bought it for half price.

    • I just went into Morningside store about 6 PM. Asked for the half price switch and they knew what I was after.
Email did say deal was from Friday though.

  • Why would you bother getting that when you can get the WD MyNet gigabit switch for $1 less any day? http://www.msy.com.au/product.jsp?productId=11390

Probably no good reason. However the Netgear is a metal case and can't be found elsewhere for under $50. And Netgear is a pretty solid brand for network equipment with lifetime warranty. WD is a HDD company that's recently trying to diversify.

Why would you want to get a WD switch when you can pay $1 more and get one from a company that specialises in networking equipment? (I suppose because we're Ozbargin-ers)

The Netgear is definitely of much better build quality and has lifetime warranty. Apart from the aesthetics, there will be a difference in performance. I can say how they compare, but I'm sure the Netgear will outperform the WD.

I've got numerous Netgear and HP switches in my home and I can tell you that the HP switches perform much better.

Why would you bother getting that WD MyNet toy with a 1-year warranty when you can get the Netgear ProSafe with lifetime warranty for $1 more? http://support.wd.com/warranty/policy.asp#policy?lang=en

      • I've found switches are one of the most reliable things out there, I've never had one stop working.

I have a fair few laying around, they all still work perfect. Majority of them are that old I don't even recognise the brand name of them. Plus for something that costs $24, screwing around with warranty is more trouble than it's worth.

If these were worth $100 I'd completely agree with you, but for $24 I'll take that 'risk'.

I have a recent model D-Link Wi-Fi router & Gb switch that died after 14 months. The Gb ports drop dead but the Wi-Fi radio kept on working. Luckily D-Link offers a 3-year warranty and OfficeWorks gave me a swap.

I also have a Linksys 10/100 switch that refused to connect at 100Mb/s. As it was out of warranty I opened it up and replaced the bad caps.

There are numerous reports of deaths for various models of switches & routers from all companies. Just look at these search results. Therefore I respectfully disagree with your that

switches are one of the most reliable things out there

as your conclusion is based on a total sampling size of one.

If and when MSY honours this deal, your choice is between a $25 small-biz grade metal switch with a long track record (Netgear has killed the bugs long ago), versus a $24 home-grade plastic switch with uncertain long-term reliability. And your recommendation is to save $1 and go for the inferior product. I find that illogical.

You had me until that last paragraph. The parent poster already said they had plenty of switches lying around, so this really is a direct accusation that this poster is lying, which is unnecessary and tarnishes your (otherwise solid) post.

The parent poster already said they had plenty of switches lying around, so this really is a direct accusation that this poster is lying,

How is he accusing him of lying by saying that his personal experience is not enough to make a blanket statement about switch reliability?

The original claim by Porthos isn't clear in the first place - are all these switches "lying around" plugged in and in use, or are they just sitting in a drawer and unused? If the former, why would you have so many aging switches on your network? If the latter, how is that any indication of reliability?

No need for the soap opera.

        • Thank you for your comment DeWalt. I wish to point out that:

          • Drawing an incorrect conclusion from insufficient/deficient data or from an incorrect application of logic is not lying; it is a flaw in methodology.

          • Supporting an incorrect conclusion is not lying; it is a mistake.

          • Refusing to admit a conclusion may be wrong is not lying; the person is misguided.

          • Having known the correct conclusion but try to cover it up by omission/not telling the truth, that is lying.

          • Porthos said he has a couple of switches laying around. He never said his switches were lying. I never accused or implied Porthos and his switches were lying either. :-)

(DeWalt) The parent poster already said they had plenty of switches lying around

        • Woops, I am guilty of misquoting "laying" too.

      • You'll need that lifetime warranty… I had my Prosafe fail once every 2 yrs, each time a new replacement was given. I'm on my third box.

  • The Netgear includes 4 POE ports.

  • I think the GS108P has the 4 Power Over Ethernet ports

  • i believe this is the basic moder and no POE ports

  • Because the subject of the email last night included the 50% off the Netgear switch, but the actual email only had some speaker sets and a monitor, I asked on Facebook today and got this back :-

"Sorry guys, we have shortage for this model, we decided to run this promotion when we have sufficient stock. Cheers"

  • Jesus I was going to buy this last weekend but $50 seemed steep when I could get a tplink for $24. So I went with that. Would have snapped this up for $25 for sure.

  • can you please screenshot the email's ads?

    • the email didn't mention the price or the exact model. Just said Netgear ProSafe 8 port switch 50% off.
So would be pretty useless to post a screen shot.

  • Damn, I would have been buying this in an instant if it was down to $25.

  • It looks like only OP has managed to purchase item at half price, and given the facebook response, we'll move this to the forums.
