*FREE* Windows 8.1/Windows 7 & Adobe Software for NSW Students

970

All NSW Department of Education and Communities students are eligible to download and licence Adobe and Microsoft software from this website.

Students will need to use their @education.nsw.gov.au student email address to register on their first visit. They will receive a verification email before they can proceed. Individual students are eligible for one download per application only.

I'm guessing this is for the new BYOD (Bring your own device) policy starting for this year 9.
Great if you want to jump on the new windows 8

      • Hmm interesting. Perhaps a spot of disk imaging is on the agenda! Re the media center, i run XBMC on my raspberry pi, see no reason to run a media center on a desktop pc, rather just direct VLC.

Because when you record TV shows on WMC you can download a plugin that removes the ads automatically. I've seen things that are meant to work in other programs followed by "note: you will have to research/compile the source/follow other steps/it's assumed you have some knowledge"

  • This has only ever been available for the outgoing year 12 students.

I'm not sure if this has changed from a departmental position but I doubt it. Take advantage now if you have an account. There is a high possibly the criteria will change next week.

    • A separate Adobe license wasn't available for the outgoing year 12 students. It was pre-installed in the unlock image on their laptops but they weren't given a licence for another computer unlike Windows and MS Office.

      • This was true in previous years, adobe wouldn't allow the transfer of license.

        This has changed.

  • Thanks OP downloading my fresh new copy of Windows 8 for free. Thankyou public education.

    • Not a good idea

    • Product Keys can only be used by 1 person at any given time..

Wish this was available for Victorians

    • Enough of our taxpayers money has been wasted. Let people who want MS Win 8 in VIC buy it rather than all taxpayers contribute millions to Microsoft for the benefit of relatively few. It would be better of if they just had some sort of rebate for those that needed a subsided copy.
From the lack of awareness I wonder how many NSW parents bought a retail copy because they weren't aware their kids could get this. Double win for Microsoft.

  • This would have to do with the new NSW government BYOD? Aruba as I heard from sales people boasting here in WA? If it is expect those things to lock down pretty well (mass packet viewing software) with the VPN dongles I heard they were getting?

    • According to a school newsletter this website allows students to BYOD and install free MICROSOFT/ADOBE software. Although strange enough there is no office. The school recommend a free alternative such as Libre Office.

    • Are you talking about the Aruba Wireless controller?

Hi all, I have created a new thread for the Edith Cowan University students to download free windows softwares including Windows 8 and 7 as well as other products from DreamSpark. Link is :https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/130132
Sorry I am new to Oz bargain so don't know if it comes off as spam but it works for ECU students (me being one)

  • My household ordered a copy of Windows 8.1 from there - under "System Requirements" it says that you can upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 8.1 and retain your existing applications. However upon doing a Google search, most sites seem to claim that you CANNOT migrate applications when upgrading from Windows 7 to Windows 8.1 and would need to re-install all of them. Is that a typo on the site, or is it some special install package that makes it possible?

    • For stability reasons I strongly recommend a custom install (while preserving personal data). You will have to reinstall everything again which I know is a hassle, but the upside is that you will run into less problems in the future.

I recommend using Ninite.com as a way of installing all your commonly used software.

If you are still set on app migration, you can use the Windows 8 upgrade advisor tool to check for compatible items. Incompatible programs or drivers must be uninstalled prior to imaging.

And here is where anyone, whether they're a student or not, can download Libre Office (very similar to Open Office which you can also Google if you wish) legally and for free:

http://www.libreoffice.org/download (includes Windows, Mac and LINUX versions)

I've been using it for awhile now and love it :-)

And if you need complex photo editing and retouching software (similar to Adobe Photoshop or Corel Photopaint) here's the link to the free, legal program GIMP:

http://www.gimp.org/downloads/ (includes Windows, Mac and LINUX versions)

I'm not going to bother posting links to free operating systems because those of you interested in that already know where to find it. I'm assuming that most people reading this just want a Windows or Mac program to download and install. But, FYI, If you are a Windows or Mac user interested in LINUX it's generally accepted that Ubuntu and LINUX Mint (which is, generally speaking, based on Ubuntu) are the most user friendly distros for new users. You may wish to Google either or both of these.

    Cheers,
    Steve

Oh yeah, and if anyone installs Windows 8 here's a link to Classic Shell http://www.classicshell.net/ this free program will bring back your start menu (which is missing on Win 8) and bring back Explorer and a few other features to make Win8 look and behave more like XP or Win7.

If you don't already know this, win8 out of the box is kind of trying to immitate Android but this doesn't work so well on a non-tablet. Win8 kind of makes your compter fell drunk or like it's on bath salts or something. Once you nstall classic shell or another patch it becomes more or less usable again.

a full screen start menu is actually more usable. You just have to learn to stop being a tard and accept change.

      • Actually it's the other way around when you think about it. It's like when they decided to put more speed limits on roads so more people can drive, only with computers it shouldn't matter. Expert users want their usability back. Same thing happened when they introduced graphical UI's in years ago and console users had their functionality taken from them, only they didn't because the console still exists today in all OSes.

  • The Microsoft Dreamspark program allows for downloads of this type of software (OS, server, etc…) for uni students.

However, in order to access the "premium" software, my son needed to go to his uni's computer club (Curtin, WA) to request it/show his ID. They burned him copies right on the spot & provided him the installation keys.

    HTH's,

    Cheers!

Kindergarten kids with email addresses? Get the $!## out. What happened to kids being kids? Now they are stuck behind screens every day? No wonder I see lots of the little bastards with glasses before they even hit age 10. Ridiculous. Gen Z will be half blind, sun starved, and hunchbacked by the time they grow up.

    • Don't worry it's just there for the educators and parents sake (and probably the spammers in time).
Funny thing is most kids can work out tech for themselves with trial and error (or from friends) while the parents and teachers are struggling with it. Thank goodness the PCs/tablets come with spell checkers and calc apps because they are so busy focusing on the fancy tools they've forgotten what they really need to teach kids ;-)

The kids may as well stay at home and watch the a lessons via Youtube/Udemy esp if the education systems overseas are getting better results ;-)

    • Where's your lawn? I'd like to walk on it.

  • Thanks, have kids in public school.

  • Thanks for this!

I was able to get Adobe CS6 + Adobe Photoshop Elements (Worth $2000) and Windows 8.1

Downloaded Windows 8.1 but i can't find adobe and mircosoft word and excel whats happend?

Thanks OP. I managed to get Creative Suite for my kid (and myself) to play with.

I wonder if it actually costs the DET anything when you order software. If so, I highly recommend not to frivolously order anything if you or your child are not going to use it as the only winners there would be Adobe or Microsoft and not us, even yourself!

Generally with volume licensing you pay for every license handed out, although much less than an individual license. It could be though that MS and Adobe have licensed this differently with the DET, being a public educational institution, so maybe it does't cost anything for license acquisitions. It would be good to get confirmation of this from someone within the department. Meanwhile, again, I discourage getting licenses if you aren't going to use them, let alone install the software.

  • Dodgy or legit ?? Has anyone else had success with this or more importantly problems ? I successfully registered with website nsw-students.onthehub.com and a link was sent to the school allocated education.nsw.gov.au email address nominated by me . Now when i try to log in to the nsw-students.onthehub.com it is saying it does not recognise my user name and password. When i try the phone number on their website over a number of hours ph 1 800 426231 it is just a recorded message saying hours of business are 6am to 6pm and to call back within those hours.
I am calling within normal business hours !
Am now concerned that maybe their website might be some sort of scam or intended to look very similar to another genuine site!
Is anyone able to run a check on their website ( directly from the link at the top of this topic thread to check if it is genuine or otherwise ?) There are a few other factors that give me a "uneasy feeling".
My main concern is to minimise potential damage to anyone else by further using the site if there any issues or risk.Am noticing that most of the discussion on this thread is not from people that have actually taken advantage of the offer. The site actually looks a bit like those bad scanned fax letters that used to do the rounds years ago trying to look like they were from a Govt Department.
