AWG definites if it's cheap and nasty (thin) or thick wires.
I've recently thrown out all my thin cables, even if they kinda worked.
Had enough - I just want reliable cables and I'll pay more for them. The thick stuff will almost always power USB 2.5" HDD's whereas the thin cheap crap won't.

Long story short, people want the thicker cables.
I will say though, the flashlight I got from tmart recently was VERY surprisingly good, I was shocked actually how good it was for like $2 (listed on here about a month ago, shipping isn't their strong point)
You know length adds to resistance too, right? If the two cables mentioned were the same cross-sectional area of copper, the 2nd one would be 1/10th the resistance (since it is 30cm, whereas the 1st is 3m). Of course, if the short one has a larger cross-section of copper, it will be even less.
Of course a thicker cable may just have more insulation on it, and the same cross-section of copper…

I've stopped buying elcheapo cables as ultimately you get what you pay for. Sometimes they stop working or just charge really slowly… Maybe good for a bday present for someone you don't really like much.
I look for AWG26 or better now.

STop Wasting your $1.15, instead use that to pay for your Favorite Iphone/Android game Apps. Both ends broken after normal use within 3 weeks. (also there is a buzzing sound when you plug into the devices)
