  • I was planning to buy this. But read somewhere that it will check for the live traffic via the phone's data connection and if you get a call on your mobile during that time, it will go to voice mail. So I ended up getting a Garmin Nuvi instead

I think that is the phone's problem, nothing to do with GPS. In my understanding the GPS just access the WiFi tethering from phone.

    • That is the 500, I don't believe its an issue on the 600.

If this doesnt come with free lifetime maps, I would not get it. I had Tomtom for a few years and keeping maps updated was expensive. {edit] Just saw that it does, and traffic also. Decent value then. My Tomtom with fewer features cost $650. It was quite a few years ago…

    • I think they stopped doing limited maps? Seems all their devices come with lifetime maps now.

  • School Zone Alerts: No
    Speed Limit Alerts: No

What? They're kidding. This is hardly a step forward when models from 5 years ago provided such basic features.

You will notice all the modals say this on the site, its nothing to be alarmed about. This device does have some (did some research into it) but initially it didn't or something weird (like how you needed the phone tefered in the 500 model to get traffic cause it doesn't have a 3G chip).

  • This was around $236 a week or two ago at Dick Smith ($299 now).

If you're not in a hurray to buy, wait for the next JB HI-FI 20% sale, they happen regularly
Their sale prices are $239.20 (GO 600) and $193.60 (GO 500)

  • Hi please note, this GPS has new OS/Software, Heaps of features are missing, although it's tomtom's current Australian flagship model, its a step back in features.

    http://discussions.tomtom.com/t5/GO-400-500-600-5000-6000-My…

There alot of complaints in relation to the new OS/Device. I own both the GO 500 and GO 600, and I have gone back to my smart phone because the lack of some major features ie; Custom POI, missing speed and red light cameras etc.

  • Was quite interested in getting the 500 not realising it had these faults.. Cameras and speed limits are a must i guess.. And whats with the gps tethering to your phone? My 2 year old garmin does traffic via the connected cable (thought i doubt the accuracy) but i always thought traffic was also via sattelite..

    • the lifetime traffic status updates has to use your phones's Bluetooth tethering the 3g or 4G internet to update any of the live services inc, Traffic Cameras and Traffic Updates.

When i bought mine from DSE and wanted to return it they didn't believe the GPS lacked the features and I didn't want to spend 2 hours arguing so now they sit in the glove box doing nothing.
