This drink isn't one for mixing.
If you don't know Laphroiag it's best to stay away.
Flavour is thick and strong, being an Islay.
Full on strong smokey/peaty flavour with a somewhat seaweed/kelp taste.
The Quarter Cask is a lot more balanced.
Use of small ageing casks results in slightly less smoke/peat but also less iodine
I thought this sounded familiar, I had some at a friend's place a while back. Definately tastes like smoke. I think the tasting notes from the link describe it best:
Tasting note: Bright gold colour. First passing reeks of choc fudge and vanilla laced peat. After aeration, the bouquet loses a little of its perfume and becomes more seaweedy and oceanic. A subtle peppermint note combines with a touch of bandaid - outstanding aromatic complexity. Soft slightly oily entry builds into a typically robust, mouthfilling Laphroaig experience as waves of sweet smoke, salt, pepper, iodine and vanilla are delivered with a creamy, warming mouthfeel and a gentle spirit tingle. Finishes refreshingly dry and long with cocoa, peat and subtle baked citrus notes lingering. Impressive. 48% Alc./Vol.
First time I have seen someone use bandaid (aroma) as a superlative.
The smell of bandaid - it's just so memorable.
That is a good price, I picked up a couple a week ago. The 10yr old is also a reasonable price. The 10yr old is also a 750ml bottle compared to the 700ml sold at DM's.
FYI - Duty Free in Melbourne Airport has a 1L bottle of Quarter Cask for $86
The same bottle in Asia duty free is around $50 - thieves!
I was just in China and they didn't have the bottle at any duty-free places in Beijing or Shanghai (that I could find).
China is also (apparently) well known for having knock-off spirits on sale… not sure if it's true.
Yep, I picked up a 1L Qtr Cask for about AUD$60 in HK last year. Didn't see it in Shanghai
