Interesting that the text has changed so much given it used to say

The year 2008 marked the last of God’s warnings to mankind and the beginning in a countdown of the final three and one-half years of man’s self-rule that will end by May 27, 2012.

      http://forums.ski.com.au/xf/threads/end-of-the-world-nah-nah…
Since the world didn't end in my 2012 it now says

The year 2008 marked the beginning of God's last warnings to mankind and that warning witness ended on Pentecost May 27, 2012. God's final countdown for man's self-rule has already begun and that rule will end soon on an annual holy day of Pentecost.

oh, oops, wrong pentecost, never mind, it HAS to be one of them, right.

SURELY this has to be proof of defective goods? lmao

More seriously these books arent free, poor schmucks are having their lives destroyed by this convicted felon to pay for this brainwashing material

      • really interesting little article on the cognitive dissonance (and life changes) when the prophecy failshttp://www.religiondispatches.org/archive/atheologies/5983/a_year_after_the_non-apocalypse:where_are_they_now%7C_%28a%29theologies_%7C_/

    • One could also read anything by any religious leader.

  • Just curious: this is getting neg'd but has the OP broken any rules? It is free, so… what's with the negs?

I hate all this end time nonsense as much as the next rational person, but negging it for that reason doesn't seem valid.

    • +11

I would be cautious giving a cult group your address and details
Judgments are based on Harold Campings absolute deception setting dates for the end of the world

      • +3

I am cautious giving anyone my details.

    • +5

I agree, its free no rules broken so shouldnt be neg'd.
Seems like a lot of people on this site neg something if they dont like the product.

      • +2

Cults are very dangerous. Destroy people's relationships with loved ones.

      • +1

Doesn't matter that it's not broken any rules, if that were the case it should be more than just negged, it should be removed. Personally I think it should be removed anyway, but the mods shot down my report so no go.

I'd settle for even being allowed to neg this, but the mods decided that's not allowed either. The fact that I'm highly suspicious of the value of this as a "bargain" is not a valid reason for using the neg button. I had always thought that the crowdsourcing of human reasoning, experience and opinion was in fact the strength behind OzBargain. I'm quite disappointed.

    • +2

Generally people give negative votes when they think an item is not good value. People have looked at this book and concluded it is not of good value. Therefore their negs are appropriate. Value judgements are part and parcel of bargain hunting.

      • +1

a bargain would be them giving us money to read it

        • +1

It would have to be a LOT of money for me to read this drivel.

This is by the guy who predicted the date of the end of the world. It didn't happen when that date passed, then he said he misinterpreted it, and it was actually a week after that. That date passed also.

What credibility do these doomsday preachers have? They're just wasting people's time. Time which equates to money by the way.

      • +3

I see a lot of things on ozb that aren't good value (to me) .. just because it isnt good value to me doesnt mean i should neg it.

If i find someone giving me money to read this book (as ilovepizza suggests), then I would neg this because i've found better value for the same product elsewhere (if i find an ipad at bigw cheaper than an ozbargain post for it at kogan, i would neg it).

voting guidelines doesn't suggest "its not for me, therefore i should neg it".

This freebie isn't for me .. so i will ignore it (albeit curious about the 20+ comments!!!)

        • I think you're right. People understate the value of time spent not gaining anything useful or entertaining.

        • +2

For starters, I do think that even if you want to cancel a down vote, I don't see why my comment would be cancelled. That is just pure censorship.

Secondly, something that does only harm to society is by definition damaging, and I believe people should be able to down vote things like that. That is my opinion, and I am entitled to it despite the rules. By way of example, cigarettes are better for you than this book, and society taxes the buggery out of those, so why can't we vote on a bad book that encourages cults?

    • +1

given it is always free, it doesnt belong in the deals, it belongs in the forum

      • That's not actually a rule. Free things (with the exception of always free ebooks, websites and software) are freebies.

        • -1

          apologies for misunderstanding the rule

    • +2

It's getting negged by so many people because we don't want to see this sort of exploitative rubbish here. It's not a bargain, even with the free pricetag - it's propaganda aimed at capturing the imaginations of vulnerable-minded people. Scientology's "personality tests" are free too, should they be promoted here?

OzBargain should not become a new frontier for evangelism, especially not the wealth-building kind.

Mods, this site's strength is it's users' ability to show what they think is a bargain and what isn't. Yet we can't neg this.

      W.

we don't want to see this sort of exploitative rubbish here.

        Who is 'we'…?
There are currently over 3000 active users on site… This post has been negged perhaps 15-20 times… that's a tiny percentage of 'us'.
Most people give a brief glance…. click if they're interested, or move on if they're not. No harm done. A deal with few positives is not going to hang around long….

OzBargain should not become a new frontier for evangelism,

Should it be a place where a few individuals can impose their opinion and decide what the greater membership should and shouldn't have access to?
I'd rather make my own choices thanks…

        • +2

The mods have decided the deal stays, I don't like it but so be it, I accept their decision. But why shouldn't users be able to neg a deal they think is a crap bargain? I don't understand why the negs are being revoked.

          As for this:

          Who is 'we'…?

I was not making a claim on behalf of all or most of the membership, far from it. My use of "we" meant those of us who negged the deal, I was not talking about anybody else at all.

        • if enough people neg the deal, it gets hidden from most user's view

If there are more negative votes than positive, the deal is hidden on new deals page & categories page for visitors and users with default settings.

          https://www.ozbargain.com.au/wiki/help:voting_guidelines

          will also help with

I don't understand why the negs are being revoked.

    • +2

It's free, but that doesn't make it a bargain.

I could give you a free kick in the nuts if you like. That wouldn't be a bargain either, although it would probably be better for you than this book.

      • +1

I could give you a free kick in the nuts if you like. That wouldn't be a bargain either,

Whilst I have no particular interest in such a deal…. one never knows what others might be interested in…..

      • +3

Can we order those as a gift for other people? ;-)

  • +2

    Kifflom be praised!

  • +3

To neg a deal it needs to either be found cheaper elsewhere, be a defective product or there are major issues with the retailer. I have no idea if it is a cult group or not, which would fit in with being a defective product, The link posted by thelastnoob indicates it is a cult. As I don't have any specific knowledge I will refrain from voting.

    • In that case, I'll submit a deal - free cat turd with free postage, rrp$50. Unique turd, won't be cheaper anywhere, no major problems with owner/cat, not defective, great novelty. 100% sure cat is not part of a cult.

      • You would be done in with the "Is there enough quantity? Ensure there is adequate quantity." rule. I think we all need to try harder if our goal is to work within the laws of OzBargain.

        • … LOL !!
My neighbor's cat next door seems to give me plenty of "quantity" on my lawn >_<

        • +2

Alright. I think I have a way of working within the bounds and getting this deal off our website. For the sake of transparency I will outline my report to the moderators in this post, you'll know whether or not it was successful based on the outcome (it's either going to be a closed comment or deal).

There is a clause in our Guidelines, specifically under the heading of What Should Not Be Posted which state that since there are so many useful free software programs and websites out there that if we listed every great one, then we would be inundated with deals.

It is then further recommended by the Guideline that these types of deals be transferred over to the forums.

Now since books, like software and programs can be free in nature as well, I would presume that we can extend this clause to cover this particular deal.

The OP neglected to state that this book has always been free. Don't believe me? This is a screenshot from 2011.. It has always been free on multiple platforms, including the hard copy edition via delivery. Here is the link for reference. Here is a secondary source to support my claim and report.

        • LOL. Are we in the Supreme court?

It's not a moderators vs. users issue. We are applying the guidelines consistently. Freebies are freebies. Just because a freebie has been around for a while doesn't mean its not a freebie.

As you stated, its been there since 2011 so I'd say the quantity is probably enough given there probably isn't much demand.

        • -2

My issue is not with quantity, rather that under guidelines of What Should Not Be Posted, this item should be considered under the clause of Free Software/Websites as it has always been free, making this post more viable under the forums section of the website to avoid clutter and inundated deals.

        • It's not a website nor software, it's a physical book so what you are saying amount to removing the freebies section.

        • My cat is probably looking to expand his business. Keep an eye out on CareerOne.

        • +1

Mod: Removed Personal Attack And also, as a Christian with my own doubts about our template, I notice Word and Koorong bookstores (Christian bookstores) always get a reasonable run on this great site. This book is someone else's opinion that probably sounds as fanciful as the Bible. Give them both a run, hold them both up to the same scrutiny, let the chips fall wherever.

      • +1

free cat turd with free postage,

I have no doubt in my mind that people would go for it….

    • +1

This book is definitely a defective product, since the author claim a whole bunch of BS that isn't true.

  • Whether it's divinely-decreed or simply human nature, I do believe WW3 is around the corner; historically all major economic depressions have been followed by massive inter-regional or inter-global conflicts.

War gets us out of depressions, make no mistake about it. It creates plenty of jobs, encourages industrial and manufacturing self-sufficiency, spurs on very liberal fiscal spending, reduces standards of living thus enabling heavy spending on infrastructure (which eases the burden of the inevitable post-war population boom) and is a catalyst for technological innovation like no other, much of which makes it to the private sector later on.

In the words of General Smedley Butler, "War is a racket".

You'd have to be quite the ostrich choking on sand to not hear the war drums banging louder and louder every single day; since 9/11 we've been in a perpetual state of conflict in one region of the world or another: Afghanistan, Iraq, Pakistan, Yemen, Ossetia, Lebanon, Egypt, Libya, Syria, Somalia, Sudan, North Korea, etc…

Iran and Taiwan are only a matter of time and could well be the Franz Ferdinands of the 21st century.

Throw other likely flashpoints into the mix such as India/Pakistan, Israel/Palestine (yet again), North Korea/South Korea (yet again), Kurdistan, Mexican Civil War/Drug Cartel Failed State, and the inevitable Iraqi/Afghani civil wars that will happen as soon as Western forces withdraw and we are looking down the barrel of at least a century of non-stop violence if not a true World War.

The war that will last "our lifetimes" as Dick Cheney put it, is certainly living it up to its moniker.

Also, we're soon to receive 2,500 US troops on Aussie soil (that's probably the tip of the iceberg) and a drone facility on the Cocos Islands, in addition to retrofitting Australian naval bases so they can rearm US battleships. These kinds of things aren't mandated "just in case".

Might I also add, this has been in the works since long before most us could imagine, quite literally: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9RC1Mepk_Sw

    • It is also, as has been openly admitted by NSA advisors, and in leaked NSA files via Edward Snowden, the only hope in hell they have of continuing forward with their current programme of 'security' and 'free trade' 'enhancements' which are already raising ire as they are unjustifiable in peace time, but incredibly good for big business.
      Which sucks
You are right, would would have to be living under a rock, or just utterly blind not to be able to see it coming. Senior US advisers have even been recommending a series of deliberate insults and provocations against nations like Iran to try to kick things off without it looking like we started it. (reference, the Guardian newspaper - NSA files section). I cant help but wonder if operation Sovereign borders is not an attempt to provoke the largest Muslim nation in the world, Indonesia, into such an attack, with - as you not, the US increasing its presence here, and Indonesia so far from most of the populated parts of AU, and so far from the US it could be considered relatively safe, and not a threat to the mass of oil in the mid east.

      • I don't think this is really the arena to voice these kinds of sentiments at length or get into existential debates about our collective future; I just wanted to counter the notion that simply because these ideas are inspired by the milieu of religion, that they MUST BE WRONG; ha ha ha! You believe in the bearded sky God and his magical water-skiing son, ho ho ho, I am free of all manipulation, bow before me archaic troglodyte, where's eugenics when we need it, et al! *cue tired, old atheist "God is dead" speech.

Yes okay, we all get it, you are consummate individualists and materialists; that does not however negate the fact that many powerful interests worldwide are rapidly converging their agendas towards war on a global scale.

the only hope in hell they have of continuing forward with their current programme

As Solzhenitsyn said: A state of war only serves as an excuse for domestic tyranny.

        • +1

meh, is there any reason we should restrict intelligent to segmented portions of the internet where only the skeptics, atheists and critical thinkers gather? honestly the more people who read and think about the woeful state of affairs we in, the massive difference between what people THINK wealth distribution is and just how unbalanced it actually is, the incredible level of data that is held on each of us (more than on any 60s spy or activist), and just how overt the cronyism and conflict of interest is becoming, the better off the lot of us are going to be. If people figure this out then it will hopefully be too late for a war to be of use to them. Maybe we can even get something like actual democracy, rather than govt of the highest bidder,

    • @ Amar89 you make an interesting comment.

Not surpriisingly a common religeous denominator is apparent amongst the majority of those countries also.

    • Inter-global conflicts? Can't remember that happening yet. What/who do you know that the rest of us don't?

      • Lol, good call. Intra-global then.

      • Next Star Wars is due out 2013. Let's hope there isn't a WWIII (there's always a war going on) but at the very least until I've seen all the new Star Wars movies coming out ;-)

My negative vote got revoked because it was deemed as inappropriate, but like any other product surely it can be deemed defective based on its past performance?

ie based on the fact that there is a "major issue with product in that it doesn't work the way it should".

He is claiming to be able to predict the future…

In 2008, Weinland wrote that "the final countdown has begun, as the 1,335 days before the actual day Jesus Christ returns began on Tuesday, September 30, 2008.

Weinland later changed his prophesied date for the return of Christ to Pentecost of 2012, which fell on May 27.[26][27] Prior to this date, Weinland declared that 7,000 ministers and leading members of the Sabbatarian Churches of God would die in the Great Tribulation

In a blog post dated May 13, 2013, Weinland stated that Christ would return on some future Pentecost Sunday, but only when the Earth had endured "much suffering"; he did not give a specific year. He expressed hope that members would remain with the church after May 19, 2013,[32] which passed without any apocalyptic event.

Religious texts have never shown any predictive capability. They exist purely to fill the void left behind by ignorance. I really pity those individuals who, in a last ditched attempt at "salvation", handover their life savings to these charlatans.

What about the Mark of the Beast and the inevitable RFID chips we'll all have inside us at some point, which will converge credit cards/fiat currency, keys/access cards, health monitors and biometric passports all into one? The capstone of an Orwellian state.

"No one will be able to buy or to sell, except the one who has the mark, either the name of the beast or the number of his name."
        Revelation 13:17

I don't think that's too far off at all. Plenty of proposals for insanely anti-libertarian and unethical devices have already been made.
The US DoD is planning to implant soldiers in the not-too-distant future. Animals and criminals under house arrest are already foreshadowing our eventual plight.

Matthew 24:3 is also quite symbolic of the plight of today's "Christians", namely specifying how everyone will come to hate them, they'll be forced to leave their faith in droves, and false saviours in the guises of other ideologies will claim their flock and highly popular false messiahs will become global leaders (I use quotes since Christianity has long-since vanished in all but name only).

        • +3

Simply stating that a hurricane will one day level Cairns is not a prophetic prediction. We value the science of meteorology because it is able to give an accurate prediction of when these events are likely to happen. The bible is a myriad of generalised statements authored by desert dwelling folk who didn't know up from down. Disease, floods, earthquakes were a complete mystery for those who lived before the age of science.

When something is true you see a pattern of convergence.. Christianity demonstrates a pattern of divergence with the fracturing and the re-interpretation of 'Holy' Scripture. Today we have over 40,000 denominations of Christianity. We do not have 40,000 re-interpretations of Biology.

        • -1

The bible is a myriad of generalised statements authored by desert dwelling folk who didn't know up from down.

Well considering that rag-tag farmers with pitchforks were able to eventually usurp the influence of the global superpower of their heyday, the Romans, they certainly did know more than you give them credit for.

Christianity demonstrates a pattern of divergence with the fracturing and the re-interpretation of 'Holy' Scripture. Today we have over 40,000 denominations of Christianity.

That's because as with all of the Abrahamic faiths, people today practice pseudo-Christianity, pseudo-Judaism or pseudo-Islam.

That's largely due to deliberate social engineering to steer it away from being a mere spiritual, personal connection between man and maker and more of a dogmatic servitude and surrendering authority to quasi-political religious institutions.

Christianity up until the Council of Nicea and the Romans bastardising it was what I would consider true Christianity.

Whether or not today's Christians know shit about their history or can agree on the most basic tenets of their faith I could care less about; that does not negate the fact that the Bible still contains pertinent presages for 21st century mankind, that have survived largely unscathed throughout it's history of misinterpretation, censorship and outright fabrication.

The end of the world for any of us is when we die so it is pointless looking for signs of the end of human existence. From the beginning of time, predictors have been giving out dates for the destruction of the world and those dates have passed without incident. The same will happen with this one. Cheers.

    From WIkipedia:

In 2008, Weinland wrote that "the final countdown has begun, as the 1,335 days before the actual day Jesus Christ returns began on Tuesday, September 30, 2008."[25] Weinland later changed his prophesied date for the return of Christ to Pentecost of 2012, which fell on May 27.[26][27] Prior to this date, Weinland declared that 7,000 ministers and leading members of the Sabbatarian Churches of God would die in the Great Tribulation.[28]
May 27, 2012, passed without Weinland's predicted apocalypse. In a blog posting dated May 26, 2012, Weinland acknowledged that "nothing has begun in the world that would signal the need or purpose for…Christ’s return". He urged his followers to "move forward", and suggested that God had been, and continued to be, merciful to his people. He later stated that the end of the world had indeed begun on May 27, 2012,[29] but would take "one year to become fulfilled". Weinland next asserted that Christ would return on May 19, 2013 (Pentecost Sunday),[30][31] but later withdrew this prediction.

If you are after a book full of failed predictions, this is the book for you.

  • This load of rubbish should NOT be on OzBargain.

  • It's laughable that that wiki entry talks of Christ's return yet contradicts the gospel and Christ that no one knows the hour. Neg
