[VIC] Free Train Travel before 7am Weekdays [Melbourne]

1150

This has been around for sometime now, however I can't find anything on Ozbargain and I know some people aren't aware that it applies with Myki.

Free travel on Melbourne's electrified train network for trips finishing before 7.00am (weekdays). However technically it is before 7.15am exactly. I believe they have done this with Myki to allow for trains that are late. If your train arrives after this you will be charged.

You need to have a Myki and positive balance. You need to touch on and off and you wont be deducted anything.

If you only train into and from the city then this essentially halves the cost of your travel as you only pay for a 2 hour fare.

U still need to pay on ur way home?

    • Early Bird train travel
Touch on and touch off within two hours and before 7.15am on a weekday, and make sure you have a positive myki Money balance, to receive the free Early Bird fare on your metropolitan train journey.

So, if your journey home ends before 7:15am on a weekday then no you don't need to pay for it.

    • The trains running this early always have spare seats. The purpose of this deal is to get people to travel on an earlier service and reduce crowding during peak times.

Free travel on Melbourne's electrified train

Will not work on vline which are not electric?

This post sure feels nostalgic. I mean it’s simply the best deal to have flown me back 10 years.

Don’t know who put up the idea (OzB) to randomly feed these long running posts on top but it’s freaking brilliant.

    • Oh that explains it. I didn't notice the date and thought this was a recent deal

I think it's free if you've touched on before 7.15am, doesn't matter if your journey finishes after 7.15am. At least that's what happened with me yesterday when touched on at 6.55am and touched off at Parliament around 7.30am

  • This has been around almost 15 years now.

There's like 3 people in all of Victoria who have Myki. The rest have a 5 fingered discount

    • +1

There's more than 3 that I personally know.

    • Maybe just your circle of friends.

    Early Bird train travel
Your metropolitan train journey is free if you touch on and off before 7.15am on a weekday.
Your journey won't be free if your myki balance is negative.

    2 hour myki Money fare
If you first touch on after 6pm, you can travel until 3am the next day—that's up to nine hours' travel for the price of two.

    Weekend fares
On weekends and public holidays, your daily myki Money fare is capped at $7.20 (half price for concessions). You can enjoy all-day unlimited travel.

Jealous of all these free things for Melbournians.
    Sydney will never get these

    • +5

You probably won't ever approach our debt levels, either.🥲

      • Won't be long before the price of a daily ticket reaches $15.

I would prefer to pay less on land tax, stamp duty, car registration and stamp duty/transfer fees, road tolls, council rates etc.

We pay for it many times over through these VIC special taxes.

If I buy a $33000 EV in ACT the transfer fee is $46. If I buy the same car in VIC the stamp duty/transfer fee is over $1400.

    • How's the Tate course going?

      • No Ozbargainer would ever buy into that scam lol

Remind me to change my username. Tate fell off so hard

Should really be touch on before 7/7:30 and then get the trip free if it's within 2 hours.

Would definitely ease up morning peak hour more. No one who starts work at 9 will want to head in that early.

In 2024 imagine still catching the train to the city for work lol

    • +1

Lot of companies have made it mandatory to come to work for 2-3 days per week. So people do catch train to the city.

    • what's wrong with this?

    • +2

      Imagine driving to work.

You’re right imagine using the more sustainable, safer, cheaper and quicker mode of transport in 2024. obviously a 2004 honda is the better choice!

  • +3

Point to be noted is this is Train only, if you touch on a bus even before it will still charge you.

    • -7

Don't be lazy then and walk to the station. It's often quicker.

I'm not sure if anyone saw the scenes in the Metro tunnel on New Years but a plus to this is you get to experience what catching trains in India is like right at home in Melbourne!

    • +1

You could have caught an uber…

      • +2

Nah, the guy’d rather complain about how the public transport at the busiest time on the busiest day of the year was busy.

  • Only free bus links in CBD and in Southbank here

  • -2

lmao who's going on the train before 7am post covid?

    • +2

      Plenty of people.

      • tough life - sorry to hear

        • +3

          Why? Not everyone is unemployed.

    • People who prefer to avoid crowded trains and also like their train ride to be free, and people who have to start work before 7am and find the train a good option for getting to their workplace
