Good Life Gym - an ozbargain??

Hi

I've been offered a membership at good life gym for 16.95 per week, 12 month contract, $59 upfront fee. Is this a good deal? I would only be using the cardio equipment mainly so a no frills/24 hour gym is another option. How does this rate compare to no frills gyms in the Sydney CBD (eg Anytime fitness).

Thanks

What equipment are you gonna use at the gym?

    $940/year is pretty costly

  • I think anytime fitness is around $12 p/w give or take.

The problem with those no frills gyms in the city is that they are packed during peak hours. And I mean packed.

If training in the city is a must I would definitely dish out the extra to get a premium membership else where. It feels less crowded (less humid/stuff) and is just generally a better atmosphere.

    • 12pw? I think I got quoted $20pw at the Mitcham branch :(

      • THe branch of anytime fitness i joined had a 2014 deal where the enrollment fee was $14, plus the keycard $59.99. The weekly is $14.95.

I got a deal where they gave me the rest of jan free (approx 2 weeks worth) so i reckon anytime might be cheaper if you're in the blacktown area…

  • I would mainly be using the cardio equipment. The good thing about Anytime is that there is a branch near my home, but I would be mainly using the city gym so not overly keen on fighting the crowds!

if you are only ever going to be using cardio, is there a reason to not simply run outside?

    • Hell for that yearly price, you could buy your own treadmill.

Some might prefer working out with others though.

    • Exactly the first thought that came to my mind.

      • you should check your local fitness first
my local one charges me 7 bucks a week, can only use that gym and no classes. its cheap cause two new gyms open close by. i know other friends have to pay around 20 a week for fitness first!

also crunch is cheap, that usually around 7 a week and can bring a friend any time

  • I negotiated and paid cash up front, $700 for the year with Goodlife Wintergarden-Brisbane.

  • Actually if you really want to join Goodlife in Ozbargainer spirit, plenty of people are selling midyear memberships on Gumtree. Should easily find a bargain here:

  • Oh, ouch. That just sounds like standard fare to me. I'm on $24 per fortnight black card.(thought there are conditions. I only have access 4 days a week)

Edit: checked online, the normal prices are:
One gym, $17.95/week (933.40 outright for 12 months)
All gyms, $19.95/week (1037.40 outright for 12 months)
Currently (22-29th Jan) they have a promo (code:strayaday), $3/week discount.
So looks like that's the one their offering you.
I'm sure you could bargain it down more.

  • OP, this is the standard price for corporate discount.

You can get better if you push them.

  • I offered to pay the 12 months upfront, factoring a discount. They responded by firstly retracting the offer then coming back saying I could pay the $940 upfront (?!).
I may now go check out Anytime as a comparison.

    • Actually, no I hadn't read this thread. V helpful!
