Best internet plan?

Hi Guys

I'm moving out and looking for a cheap internet plan. I would like to get around 100gb per month and I don't need a home phone. What do you reckon is the best value for money was hoping to spend around $50-60. I would only be looking for a 12 month plan.

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

    check out whirlpool.

  • iinet has 125GB for $59.95 with no contract assuming you an existing phone service otherwise it is a naked ADSL plan you need.

  • +8

Try Exetel, I am with them. They are reasonably priced.

    • +1

Old Exetel user (circa 2003-4). Tried Club Telco, Dodo, Pennytel, TPG and back to Exetel (in 2014).
I think they're value of money at present.

  • +8

$59.95 a month for tpg unlimited including line rental

    • And if you're on a Telstra exchange, Dodo's ADSL2+ UNLIMITED Metro(inc. Line Rental) for $59.80 is a good deal – no contract required either.

    • +3

I love my TPG. It's so nice to be able to download TV shows and stream anything I want without having to worry about a cap!

      • +6

I love my TPG. It's so nice to be able to download TV shows linux isos and stream anything stream any free legal content I want

i think is what you were meant to say….

        +1 tpg unlimited

He could have bought the tv series from iTunes. All that he wants to stream could just be videos of cats jumping into boxes.

        • +1

I was referring to streaming Netflix and Amazon Prime Video. For TV shows I download immediately or watch on Netflix and buy the box set when it's released.

    • How is the no line rental unlimited 59.95?

      http://www.tpg.com.au/products_services/naked-adsl

      • naked option is $69.95
You pay $10 extra to not have a home phone. Better off just not plugging a phone in and going for the bundled plan.

        • hmm in Account management, it doesnt give me options to change from Naked ADSL?

  • +4

    $20 100GB Internet
    $20 Line Rental
    =$40

    With exetel, http://www.exetel.com.au/broadband.php

400gb extra for an extra $10. plus additional $10 if your not on a Optus exchange, fee is to use telstra exchange

Best deal in town for a reputable and reliable ISP and is also a 12 month contract.

    • wow

    • reputable and reliable ISP

Many users on Whirlpool would disagree with you on that one.

      • I'm with Exetel, they are the only company I could find that was both cheap and reputable. I'm on the 500GB cap because I use more than 100GB and sometimes more than 200GB. I'm also not at a competitive exchange (telstra only) which means $20 extra on every telco.

There is 1 downside though, they apparently change their pricing plans sometimes and ask you to either start paying more or quit. Hasn't happened to me, I'm hoping it won't happen again.

BTW free uploads on their contracts, free static IP that you can change 15 times before having to get a charge.

        • I think it must depend on your area or plan or something. I've been with them for 8 years and their plans have only ever gotten cheaper.

What happens is that a new plan will come out that is the same price, but has more allowance/speed, or has the same allowance/speed for a lower price. They won't call you to let you know you could be upgrading to a higher plan for the same/cheaper price, but if you check their plans once every half a year you can always get a a better and better deal with them.

Edit: I just took a look now and exactly that happened.

My current plan (6 months into 12 month contract): $50 for line rental + internet with 75GB + unlimited offpeak and uploads

New plan: $40 for line rental + internet with 100GB + unlimited offpeak and uploads
New plan: $50 for line rental + internet with 500GB + unlimited offpeak and uploads

I have to say while it's awesome they do that, there is a bit of 'FML' like you get when your smartphone gets outdated after owning it for 3 months.

        • Those $40 and $50 plans are only for new customers not existing ones.

    • Actually, it's an additional $10 if you're on a Zone1 Telstra exchange, and an additional $20 if you're on a Zone3 Telstra exchange. It is still competitive though compared with other ISPs plans available in those zones.

Why does it show $29.99 for 100GB for me? Line rental remains 20 bucks.

    • um T$ x/c $39.99 +$20 l/r= 59.99 for 100gb

      unlimited $59.99+20=79.99

  • +1

tpg and exetel generally cheapest, iinet better quality with $100 visa card for 24mth contracts

I'm in the process of leaving TPG's 59.99 unlimited because while it's perfectly fine even 75-90% of the time, the random bouts of congestion/erratic pings/slow international links really get tiresome after a while.

Personally if it's available to you I'd go for Internode's $59.99 naked 150GB plan. Great quality network and customer service, no contracts required, and extra bells and whistles you probably won't use or care about (like Annex M for faster upload speeds, IPv6, free usenet access).

    • +1

      What's internode's customer service / quality like?

I've been with tpg for several years and maybe it's just me, but I have to say I'm getting pretty sick of them. Slow internet, dropouts, and when eventually one problem gets fixed another one arises within a couple of months.

      • always been regarded as the best of all isps, even if now owned by iinet :)

      • +1

I contacted internode when I moved to a new property and Internode were outstanding. No fake claims or promises. You are give correct answers and expectations. All I mean is you are treated like a customers. Highly recommend them.

As internode was not available, I ended up with TPG. Not bad I should say.

      • excellent! been with them for a few years and though i'd love unlimited their cust service and standard of service is excellent.

      • +1

Helped some friends move away from Internode. A top hat was recently installed at their local DA rim, and I mentioned to them they could switch across to ADSL2 from their old 1500K connection. They tried asking Internode a few times to be switched across to an ADSL2 port, and Internode's unhelpful staff kept telling them no it can't be done. Like talking to a brick wall. Even the Telstra Wholesale spreadhseets were updated to reflect the new top hat install.

I suggested Exetel to suit their budget ($40 100GB and $20 phone). When they were churned, they automagically got switched to an ADSL2 port, downstream at 24576 kbps.

Thanks but no thanks Internode, too expensive and shit service.

    • I have occasional issues as well, but I can't tell if it's my cheap modem/router or the DSL connection itself. Regardless, there's NO way I could downgrade to a 150GB plan. My streaming usage is only going up, so I can live with brief issues.

      • +1

150GB plan was only mentioned because the OP is looking for ~100GB.

I'm hoping to get by with the 400GB plan. Not thrilled about paying $30 more a month but I need a dependable connection. Up to 2.5Mbps upstream and free Astraweb access will make it slightly more tolerable.

I would have done iiNet but for some reason it's a lot easier on Internode to churn from TPG just by giving them your ULL number.

If all else fails I'll move to the 1.2TB plan.

is the hassle worth <$100? :)

My upstream is maxes out at about 85KB/sec (I think that's around 1-1.25 Mbps). Having 2.5Mbps upstream would be awesome since I could much more easily stream my local Plex content to remote devices. Plus cloud-based backups would go a LOT faster.

        • +1

Yep, Plex (and Crashplan backups) is one of the reasons I'm looking to enable Annex M. Will gladly trade a meg down for a meg up.

Real world they say it might only deliver ~1.6-2.2Mbps but if I could sustain a good upstream for Plex streaming I'd be happy.

  • what suppliers are available on your exchange and if you have a choice besides telstra (logitel offer line, calls and unlimited for $98 on Telstra exchanges assuming a free port to connect to & as low as $69 on Optus with line rental)

  • I'm with Exetel 59$ for unlimited + phone with 12month contract at 99$ setup fee.

Great so far, only problem is i'm about 3km from the exchange and am getting around 400kb download speed(i think thats normal for the distance and not exetels fault). Better then nothing but still would love to get more speed.

    • +1

I hope you wanted to say 400 KB/sec (around 3.2 Mbps) and not 400 Kb/sec.
I am 6.5 Kms from the exchange and I get 290-300 KB/sec speed. Try using a good modem ( I use Billion 7800 VDPX series) or SNR settings combinations to see if you can get improved speed.
Lot of threads in Whirlpool regarding this.

  • Been using MyNetFone for over 2years now….great service and great customer service too….https://www.mynetfone.com.au/Residential/Home-Internet/NakedDSL-Plans......200GB naked DSL for $49.95/month works perfect for my download needs….I reckon you can get a free set-up and free modem from them…

    • I'm also very happy with MNF.

coolmachismo you should call up and get on the loyalty plan. Naked ADSL2+ Economy – total 200GB for $39.95 a month with 12 month contract. Discussed on whirlpool here. http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/2095924

+1 for tpg IF you are tech savvy. I had some problems with dropouts etc but purchased a new modem and all was fixed. Tech support was utterly useless however…

    • +1

I had some problems with dropouts etc but purchased a new modem and all was fixed

      How was that TPG's fault?

    • I dont think you need to be tech savvy. TPG's broadband is same as other company's broadband. I had issues with Optus earlier and their tech. support was almost the same.
I had used TPG support and they are fairly fine.

Having said that, it would be helpful if you are tech savvy as you can troubleshoot small issues yourself.

    • +5

If you are tech savvy you probably don't want TPG due to all round terriblness

    • In 2.5 years of using TPG, I've had to call tech support once. The issue was caused by a technician working on the pole across from my house and apparently screwed up something with my line. It took about an hour to go through all the various tests with TPG tech support. I would rate them as average at best, especially due to difficult-to-understand accents.

  • +5

Depends on if you like to Gamble or not.
Choosing TPG or Dodo is like playing russian roulette.

Since they are cheap, it would generally mean there is heaps of people on it. They will squeeze in as much as they can at the exchanges. Therefore if you live in a area which has a lot of stingy people, then you may have speed / drop out issues due to overcrowded exchange.

When they work fine, then you are all happy, but when they don't work fine, thats when your time becomes wasted and you start to get a headache.

However if you know you will only really use 100GB then you maybe better off getting a more expensive ADSL Line, as you will have peace of mind. Its like buying insurance, just imagine the extra costs as the insurance policy lol.

Here is a few good plans according to your 100GB:
    $59.99 - iiNet 100GB Naked ADSL2
    $69.99 - iiNet 250GB Naked ADSL2 (Best Value)

$59.99 - Internode 150GB Naked ADSL2 (Currently on Special, Most Reliable ADSL2+ Company i've ever been with)

I've been with TPG for nearly three years, a few teething problems, but nothing complicated compared with iprimus and various other providers I've used in the last 20 plus years.Their call centre is in the Philippines, they speak well and are not hard to understand compared to their Indian counterparts who invariably drive me crazy when I have to ask them to repeat what they just said so many times. I recently had a problem with dropouts and speed dropping off and they tried their hardest to fix my problem but were unsuccessful. They sent out a technician who checked out my line and my modem and found it was knackered. Down to HVN purchased a Dlink modem on special around $50 and am now enjoying speeds I have never seen before.15.2 Mbps.Never had a drop out since. I'm a happy TPG customer.

    • Genwral support is in Philippines, technical support is in India. It normally depends on the person you are talking. Newbies with little experience will know very less.

ClubTelco - $40 a month for unlimited ADSL2+. No contracts, no data restrictions, no throttling, no limits on anything.

    • That's metro. $60 for regional. Club Telco got the flick from me for doing this.

    • Do you pay separate line rental?

  • I was with exetel great price and really low speeds which they kept telling was because of the copper cables in my area which i did believe than for some reason they changer the plan and doubled eh price of my plan i than changed to club telco and surprise same cables with a 300% jump in speed and no problems of getting the speed cut in half at peak periods but yes cheap plans.

All you need to do is read the posts in whirpool just a heads up.

  • So what's the decision Exetel or iiNet? Or other?

    • iiNet or Internode.
Internode would be my choice due to their current promotion.

Also Internode is more stable and their service is impeccable.
They use Agile Exchanges which are really good compared to others.

  • As far as i am concerned it would not be exetel just read the whirlpool forums on ezxetel

    urbanstylz…

Q1 what providers can you choose from? If only T$ then you have bigpond with line rental and no calls or the link i gave you for logitel's bundle at 98 inc unlimited, calls (inc mobile) and rental

Q2 if you can get others like optus, iinet, aptt then do you want NAKED? If not then checkout the cheap logitel bungle deals on thoes but if naked then +1 iinet IMO

… & tell us if weve helped, give more info if you want more help or just be polite and say thanks & goodbye

  • Choice is all well and good, if you can get ADSL2 :(

I've been with TPG for some time now but was really p'd off last August when it "fell over" for 2 weeks!
Took a lot of sorting out and no, it was not an error with my modem or anything. The problem was with them.

  • Been with TPG for 10 years. Have had very few issues in this time. Amazing how far Aus broadband has come…I remember when 'unlimited' was a pipe dream :)

Probably depends what exchange you're on - maybe try and find feedback from people on whirlpool. I've signed a few family members up around Adelaide on different exchanges and the only problems have been on the user end.

Their tech support is adequate, not outstanding. Simple trade off for the value. If you're someone who has a very short fuse and unable to muster a bit of patience if/when you have issues look elsewhere and pay a bit more.

Your download speeds won't be the most blistering and your pings will be a little higher, but it's never been an issue for me (I download/upload tons of data and game online)
