Accidently got on EastLink Freeway

Hi guys i accidentally got onto the eastlink freeway carelessly following my GPS to my destination. I got off the next exit as soon i discovered it was a tolled way.

Does anyone know how much ill be charged for passing one toll way. I tried ringing up but it goes straight to the eastlink voice mail.

Google is your friend :) http://www.eastlink.com.au/TOLLS

  • All depends on your entry and exit points.

  • I'm interested why someone would avoid tolls. Although I don't enjoy paying tolls they do save you crazy amounts of time, and petrol too I'd imagine. Going up Stud Road used to be hell.

    • I usually avoid tolls.

Usually drive off peak & there's always roadworks or reduced speed limits on the tollway late at night. For the $14 City link round trip it's not worth it. Especially when 'time saved' isn't always so.

  • I am a daily eastlink user, and citylink a few times a week. The time it saves me daily is incredible… The fuel costs on my Ford ute well and truly justifies the toll costs.

For around $25 to setup the etag, you pretty much forget its there.. Setup $10 direct debits and its no longer a worry.

I do understand the "why should I pay to use a road, when there is another road that is much slower and uses more fuel"

It's also a handy thing to have if there is an emergency, or in a hurry, avoid peak hour(eastlink that is)

In your case, I think it would have to be a daily rate? You may as well have used it the whole way..

    • why should I pay to use a road,

Because I already pay sh!t loads of taxes which, unfortunately, go to child care fee frauds by the likes of Joe Hockey.

I live just off high street road and I hardly use east link. In my travels everyday, using east link would save me 10 minutes at most (in the evenings)and would cost $5.30 or thereabouts each way. $10.60 each day + petrol, I'd rather use PT.

In saying that, I use east link sometimes on the weekends keeping away from the Mullum Mullum tunnel ,…

  • I honestly didn't need to use the toll way that day, the gps took me on the freeway and made me get off the next exit to save what would be less than 3 minutes. Completely my fault for not reading it had a toll that route.
Don't get me wrong if I had to go somewhere like portsea then using a toll is the way to go

Just wouldn't be happy having to pay 5-10 bucks for using one toll way accidentally.

Guess I'll just have to cop this one

If you dont have an etag, you have to pay for the trip pass, which costs $5.69 and you have to buy at most 3 days later from the date you travelled.

FYI, it does not matter whether you exit straight away or continue to go till the end of the toll road since the pass will cover the rest of you trip till the end. You have no options to purchase for just the part you travelled*. You can exit and re-enter later as long as it is in the same direction and you dont repeat any part of the road you already travelled. However, if you go go back (i.e: return), then it is another $5.69.

So in the future, without the etag, if you are in it, then travel all the way as necessary

*You actually can choose to ignore it and later, they will send you a late toll invoice, which only charges for the part you travel. However, there will also be all sort of admin fees. All together, it sums up to be more expensive than $5.69 anyway.

    • Tollroads suck for tourists…
I've been caught and was completely unaware that we'd been on it for 2-300m… Got charged $14 (worked out the toll would have been $12 (plus setup costs) anyway.

I ended up driving the route on Street View.. The ONLY signage that it was a toll-road ahead was 200m from the intersection where the Toll started. Just so happened that we turned on to the road with signage about 20m before the sign.. at which point my mind was probably on things like which lane do I need to be in.
No signage at the entry or exit point whatsoever.

      • Due to family commitments I've been driving in and through Brisbane for the past couple of years. I don't live there, and don't know the roads AT ALL. Without TomTom I would be totally lost, but on numerous occasions it has taken me out of my way (sometimes quite significantly) to ensure I went through Clem7 tunnel. I've wondered at times whether there must has been some arrangement made between the owners of the tunnel and TomTom.

        • My Tom Tom asks me if I want to avoid tolls… Doesn't yours?

        • It does, and I tell it not to avoid tolls, but it has taken me well out of my way, by as much as 40 minutes, to ensure that I go through Clem7 when I had no reason to go anywhere near it.

        • Unless your gps is fully updated, those Brisbane roads are very confusing. I go up for work a bit and always end up in a tunnel or miss an exit.
