Good value wedding photo/video in Melbourne

Hi OzB,

Wondering if anyone here has had good experiences with wedding photo/videographers in Melbourne who are good value?

My budget is around $3-4K for a package that includes about 6 hours of coverage, and includes an album?

cheers

  • hit up the arts/photography department of a uni. you can get a talented (and trained) student who has been recommended by the faculty. they will cost least and be happy (in theory) t have a paid gig for their port folio.

    • Cheers. Has anyone tried this? Obviously a bit risky, but would be comforting if they have done weddings previously

        Yes I have.

The girl we found was a Visual Arts Student at RMIT ( I think). She was specialising in fashion photography, but needed a broader range of subject material for her portfolio. We had an "interview" over coffee, where she showed us her portfolio up til now. We discussed what we wanted - ours was quite an informal wedding (not a church wedding, and no white dress, veil and bridesmaids) but it was still formal enough to have the traditional family groupings and most of the other trappings.

We made a deal with her for $300 - she would take pics of the ceremony and the time leading up to reception with a few posed pics such as cutting the cake etc (even though it wasn't actually cut until later). She could have all the images to use in what ever way for her folio, and we would also have all the images unedited, as well as those which she had edited and/or retouched.

In all, she spent about four hours at our wedding. She brought a friend, and both girls had professional standard cameras. They brought tripods, reflectors and other equipment. They arrived an hour or so early so they could scope out the grounds and liaise with ground staff about images they wanted (we were married at a reception centre associated with a golf course). They asked us about any shots we particularly wanted. They took lots of us and the guests, but weren't in anybody's face.

I think we paid part of the money up front and part upon receipt. We didn't get an album, just the disc with images but that's no problem, given snapfish etc regularly have album deals.

Overall, an excellent experience. Join some wedding planning chat groups/bulletin boards and you will easily find photography students who are looking for this kind of work.

        • thanks for the detailed reply. Will definitely have a look into it.

        • I also agreed to the above. I have a cert IV photography at tafe and we used to get various job offers on the notice board including wedding photoshoot. It is a win-win both way, and usually few hundred dollars are suffix for all the hi-res jpg.

Your budget is more than enough for a good professional though.

  • I got married 7 months ago (not in Melbs though).

What we did was pay for a photographer for the ceremony (plus pre and post). I had a relative operate the video camera on a tripod.

With the reception so many people have cameras and everyone recommended not paying for a professsional for it and there were right. We had hundreds of pics from the night for free.

  • We used Thick Black Frames.

Philip the director is very professional.

Our package was within your pricerange

  • thanks for the feedback. i actually ended up putting an ad on gumtree and realised that you could get photo packages covering 10 hours for around 1000 - 1200, even cheaper if you want someone starting out. this does not include albums, but does include editing and supply of all pics on a DVD.
