Scuba diving in Phuket

I would like to go to Phuket to do some scuba diving. I dive regularly on the Barrier Reef, but would like to see somewhere different. I've never been overseas, just done lots of traveling in Australia. Could anyone give some advice on the best time of year to go, the best area to stay in or the best dive sites?
Any other advice about going to Thailand, or even what you need to keep in mind when traveling overseas in general would also be much appreciated please!

Cheers.

  • Go to Koh Tao, not Phuket; it's much better. I spent a few months there and I believe it is seriously cool. You will also be a boat ride away from the Full Moon Parties on Koh Phangan, where you can drink substandard alcohol and burn yourself on a flaming jump rope.

There might be a lot of learners in the water (the whole island is essentially a dive school) but I seriously believe it's worth it and you and your dive buddy can navigate yourselves if confident enough. Get yourself to Chumpon Pinnacle and Sail Rock.

You will fly into Koh Samui and catch a ferry from there to Koh Tao via Koh Phangan.

  • Agree with the first post. Go to KohToa. Great diving with plenty of options and sites to go to. Whale sharks at the right time of the year if your lucky. May/June. Plenty of accommodation in whatever price you after.

  • Great, thanks guys! Should have mentioned, I'll be on a very tight budget. Is Koh Tao just as cheap for activities, food etc as well as accommodation?
