Please excuse my ignorance but will this play audio regardless of if you're watching a DVD through the system or does it only play audio when you watch a DVD?

  If you turn the TV off it will obviously still play the audio. Great for listening to DVD concerts and movie soundtracks!

Do you think it is worth it to get an upscaling dvd/blu ray player for my extensive DVD collection?
I have noticed that many of my older DVDs clearly have more artifacts and less quality in the picture(e.g. Heat, Black Hawk Down) but newer titles look sharper and clearer, closer to HD quality(e.g. The Hurt Locker, Inglorious Basterds).
