First smartphone for my older sister?

Hi all, I was planning on buying my older sister a tablet device, but I want to buy her a smartphone instead.

I really want to buy one of those smartphones that have a massive screen as she has poor eye-sight. Those 'phablets' look perfect. What's the best value one going at the moment?

Thanks for any help!

    What's your budget?

  • Going by your username, a old 'brick' 1G phone would do

Aldi Bauhn 5" phones (may not be available anymore as it may have sold out long ago, but some stores may still stock them).

ASUS Padfone 3g, 7 inch. More tablet than phone, but it still makes phone calls. Was $199 during Shopping Express sale. but unlikely to see it as cheap anymore.

And there's Kogan's phablet. $199 plus delivery. Regarding quality, see responses on WP forums..

If you are willing to buy an imported phone, the THL series of devices are also fairly good, in terms of build quality and budget pricing. I don't know about the other brands though — THL and Lenovo phones are the only minor brand phones I've tried.

e.g THL W200 - roughly $215, 5 inch 720p display with quad core with 8Gb of ROM and 1GB of RAM

  • For a good out of the box, easy to use experience I would definitely recommend the Nokia Lumia line. Depending on your budget, you could look at the Nokia Lumia 1320 (6" display) or if you're more budget conscious you could look at the Nokia Lumia 625 which has a 4.7" display, and despite its lower specs it will give you a good overall experience.

The Nokia Lumia 625 can be bought from Harvey Norman for $288 but I did hear that Costco in Ringwood had them for $199.

You can buy the Nokia Lumia 1320 for $449 from Harvey Norman and I think it's also available from Vodafone and Telstra, but I don't know their pricing.

teach her to tap the screen and not press and wait for feedback like most of our parents

  • Alright, thanks.

I just want something low end, but with a big screen.
