I recently bought a Toyota Ateva 2008 model, but only came with one key. I rang Toyota for a remote and the overall charge is going to be $170 odd for a remote and programing fee. I think this is a massive rip and am looking for alternative ways i can get a remote and a key cut for the car.

I bought a second car that came with only 2 keys and 1 remote. I was able to buy a blank remote off the internet and program the second remote for my car using instructions given by the seller. Not sure if blank remotes are available for your car though.
Probably a good idea for you to get a spare car key as well rather than just a remote, because if your only key stops working, you will need to replace the entire anti theft system in your car.
I got a key cut and programmed for my car for $155 at Mr Minit. Dealer will try and charge over $200.
This did not come with electronic remote though, that is extra.

Camrys I have had have 2 remotes, 2 black keys and 1 grey key :)
$170 is a good price for a Genuine remote.
Mr Minit wants $399 to clone a remote. Toyota dealership will do two for approximately $260 odd or something like that..
I'd be wondering where the other one is (depending on how dodgy the person you bought it from was) - I've always had cars come with 2 keys.
$170 sounds pretty reasonable to me (for a stealership price) given I thought they'd be much higher than that.
