anything cheap to bali at the end of Aug 2014?

    • August is in the lowest season for Bali flights. Looks like the best return price from Melbourne is $597 per person. I reckon it's pretty reasonable considering that it's direct flights and includes baggage, food and drinks. You could probably find cheaper on a Scoot or AirAsia sale via Singapore/KL but personally I would choose the direct option unless you wanted to do a stopover.

The Best Fares page will give you an indication of fare seasons.

      • Thanks for the reply, do you know what other cost if I am paying the ticket with my credit card? I have seen $10 booking service fees, is it per booking or per person or per trip?
do you charge another 1.5% of credit card surcharge fees as well? any option to avoid these fees? thank you

        • For Long Haul bookings (such as Aus-USA) it is $30 per person "Booking and Service Fee" (no 1.5%) if paying by PayPal or Credit/Debit Card. You can avoid it by paying with Bpay instead. See bottom of this page.

        • sorry, example if book the flight sydney to bali return, for 3 people, what is the booking fees? $30 or $60?

        • Sydney to Bali would be $10 per person, so $30 total.

check Garuda Indonesia website, I believe they're having a sale return from $680 to $750 (from Sydney), depending on duration of stay.
I'm actually heading up there this August!

  • When is the lowest fare to Japan? I'm going to Disneyland with my family.

    • Sorry, not sure as I'm off work for a few days now and it isn't listed on the best fares page. If you tick the "flexible with dates" box on the search page it might help finding the lowest dates.

Does it make me a bad rep to suggest you could also look at the AirAsia deal I posted earlier tonight?

  • When does the virgin 20% off reward seat sale start?

    • Sorry, not at work for a few days so can't answer that. Not sure I could find out that detail even if I looked.

  • soo tempting!
if one were to book flights, which is the better airline to choose, delta or virgin aust?

    • +1

I would say Virgin Australia but I'm obviously biased! :)

    • +1

Fly with Delta! You could not pick a worse airline in US. Lost baggage, cancelled flights, cancelled seats, double booked seats, too many bad stories about them, so read the travel forums and then decide.

    • +1

Do both airlines have in seat entertainment? Are there any differences in seat comfortably?

I've only flown United (worst airline by far) which has no entertainment, crappy seats, and old planes. Looking to fly to Atlanta with a stopover in LAX and Delta/Virgin Australia has similar prices.

      • I was on this very flight 2 days ago, came back from skiing in Canada. Flew economy, in flight entertainment was great, 100's of movies to choose from. I watched Gravity and 'prisoners' as well as a couple of TV shows.

Virgin is OK by Economy standards, food was good and service OK. The Syd/LA flights are on a 767. I flew on the Qantas A380 in Business Class a couple of years ago with work. I think it was the best I've flown, cant remember because I slept most of the way on the lie flat fold out bed! Conversely I flew back from Japan last year on Jetstar Business Class. Felt like an economy seat on any other plane, maybe the seat was a bit wider, other than that, nothing special.

I flew Mel/LAX return on this flight. In the states I flew Southwest to Vegas, Air Canada Vegas to Vancouver and Delta/Air Alska vancouver back to LAX ( to catch the Virgin flight home). Internal US flights I normally try Southwest 1st. They are cheap and cheerful but they dont charge for bags. Some airlines over there charge you per bag and they are deadly on the excess baggage. Southwest can take some getting used to as they have no seat allocation. You pay for a spot in the queue and when you get on you sit wherever you want!

        • Just to clarify, both Virgin and Delta use 777 aircraft for flights between Australia and US.

      • Yes, both have in seat entertainment and Virgin Australia have usb plugs in every seat so you can charge a phone or tablet. Not sure about usb on Delta but they might have it too. Planes are relatively new, in the case of Virgin Australia they were built in 2009 and feature 3-3-3 seating which makes them a lot more comfortable compared to airlines that use 3-4-3 configuration in Boeing 777. I believe the aircraft Delta use on that route are pretty new too.

Can't agree more! United is the worst airline from Syd to LA/SFO!

Virgin were kick ass for me going to LA in 2011…

      • Flew Delta recently on a long haul flight and I must admit I was pretty impressed. Seats had enough space and the inflight entertainment was pretty good. Wasn't expecting much due to the crappy reputation US airlines have in general but would definitely fly with them again.

    • +2

I flew MEL -> LAX return with Virgin Australia last year…can't complain. Seats had their own LCD screen (which I would expect on any long haul international flights) and usb ports for charging (first international flight I've been on with this). Food probably wasn't the best airline food I've had but not the worst either.

I like how its a direct flight as well, no time wasted on stopovers.

I have noticed Virgin flight staff are generally more upbeat than other airlines. For example, checking in at LAX for the return flight, the check in area was kinda like a disco! Also I like how Virgin make the safety demonstrations entertaining.

  • I've flown with both delta and VA, they both have in seat entertainment. I'd say they are much of a muchness, I'd go with the one that I could find the lowest price.

    FYI….Cheapest I could find MEL > SFO is $1367

Any good deal for Business class?

  • flying to Hawaii Dece 2014 - do you think its cheaper to go to LAX and then back to HNL (Honolulu)

    • +2

Probably not. Jetstar have direct flights to Hawaii so I would expect them to be cheaper. We do have some options (through the call centre or travel agent) to fly to HNL via LAX in one direction and direct to/from Australia in the other direction with Hawaiian Airlines if you were wanting to visit both destinations.

      • thanks for the honesty!

  • after missing out on the airnz deal, this is tempting.

Used daterange: depart 11th may. return 18th june, and it also comes up as $1200.

  • Any flights for the month of July between 5th and 27th? Doesn't seem to be that cheap :-(

    • +1

I think the lower fares might already be sold out for that period as it's the middle of school holidays in Australia and summer vacation in US.

  • I had been on this flight from Sydney before, very much like the 'light' option of flight-meal.

Tempted to go again. BTW, my partner's going to Canada for work soon, is it worth convincing him to take transit in LA? Is there any deal for flight to Montreal at the moment?

  • I think this special is now expired…prices much higher now

    • Still seems to be plenty of dates available. I just tried 3rd-31st March SYD-LAX as an example.
