Hi jv, $39.99 is the RRP set by the publisher Scholastic. You can check out www.booko.com.au to compare Australian retail prices on these products.
      I hope that's helpful.

        • +6

why does he/she have to have sold it previously for it to be a saving? i don't care if it's a one-off sale or they got them in especially on some great deal. as long as it's the cheapest price out there by some margin (as booko shows), then it's good for me.

perhaps adding "off RRP" may have made you happy. who really knows though.

        • +5

if you want to get picky, the headline here doesn't say "was", "before" or "strike through". it just says "save" - which is actually true compared to what others are selling the book at.

the website does have a strike through, but says "rrp". so strictly doesn't imply they ever sold at that price. many websites do something similar. go to appliancesonline - and they quote a $ and % saving in bright red, and then say "off rrp" in obscure grey text. it's not illegal.

        • -7

if you want to get picky,

          you are missing the point…

read the law about advertising prices

          http://www.accc.gov.au/consumers/prices-receipts/price-displ…

you are not saving 68% because you could have bought this book last week for the same price at this store.
they only reason they are 'claiming' you are saving 68% is to mislead you into thinking you will save money if you hurry and buy it now.

        • i have read that. what have i missed exactly?

the website never implies they previously sold at rrp. the headline to this post says "save" - which is true. "was", "before" and a strikethrough do imply they sold at that price previously - but "save" does not.

        • -4

the headline to this post says "save"

which is a misleading price comparison as there is no saving from their normal price.

        • +1

it is no such thing! it's a statement of a saving, not that they ever sold at a higher price. the saving is indeed true.

as i said earlier, if i could buy this at a lower price elsewhere, then i'd have a beef with them. but i can't. booko shows that.

i would think that this is a good thing, no?

        • -3

it is no such thing! it's a statement of a saving

          you obviously have difficulty reading.

Making a statement that says you are saving money when the product has not been sold at that higher price in the period immediately before the sale commences is against the law

          http://www.accc.gov.au/business/pricing/displaying-prices#tw…

you obviously have difficulty understanding what "misleading and deceptive" conduct really means and have to rely on the accc website for an interpretation. read the section of the cca. read the cases. this is not misleading. it'd be better if it said "save off rrp" - but it doesn't mean it's misleading and deceptive conduct.

we just can agree to disagree on this one. i think it's fine. you don't. the world won't end.

        • and have to rely on the accc website for an interpretation

I'm merely pointing out that what the Rep has done here is likely misleading and deceptive according to the law in this country.

it is quite clear that there price was $12.99 last week, and is $12.99 this week, so there is no saving. To claim there is a saving is wrong.

        • -1

i think this is where you have got it wrong. to say "was $xx not $yy" would be wrong here. to simply say "save" is okay. it never implies they previously sold at this price. it's a statement. it doesn't say "now $yy". and that's just the headline here. the website is even clearer on this.

even the accc website doesn't say what you're saying. the law clearly doesn't say what you're saying. this is not misleading. and the accc would be annoyed if you called them to say that it was.

i don't really mind if you get it wrong. i just don't want others to be poorly educated on what is right or wrong on this…

        • to simply say "save" is okay.

nope, that is a price comparison and falls under the ACCC laws…

Nothing makes jv happy, that's why we all log in just to read his comments, usually gives me a good kick and laugh for the day. :-)

          Damn…I ran out of negs!!

        Misleading prices may include:

a ‘before’, ‘was’ or ‘strike through’ price that is not the price those items were sold for in the period immediately before the sale period started

        http://www.accc.gov.au/consumers/prices-receipts/price-displ…

        • +4

Previous to this sale we didn't stock these titles in all stores but they were available for customer order. The last time one was sold at RRP$39.99 was December 2013.

        • -1

you were selling them for $12.99 last week.

        • +1

I vouch for QBD's prices. they are the price leader for this book and other neat books that made Xmas shopping much cheaper for me last year.
In a heavily discounted e-retail environment, I don't really pay much attention to RRP, I don't think it's a clear indicator anyway for anyone that can google prices.
Although I don't trust or even pay attention to the RRP, what does make a difference is that QBD often have the best prices and really nice service and delivery.
Also, I got nothing to do with their company, they've just done fine by me!

        • -3

I don't think it's a clear indicator anyway for anyone that can google prices.

The point is that misleading advertising can impact people who are not aware of booko and are not tech savvy enough to search for the best price on the internet.

That is why the advertising laws exists.

A bit like the how Optus just lost the court case for misleading people about their coverage. The wording of the ad was designed that way to deceive people…

        • did it say ' save ' last week.

    • +3

OMG booko is like the static-ice for books! thanks for the link, andy!!

Are the working lightsabers working from geniune kyber crystals or just synthetic crystals, because I think only Sith use synthetics.
It's just a lifestyle choice, my doctor said that the Dark side is really high on stress and revenge.

    • +3

Bahahahaha! After reading the flame war above, it was fantastic to read your deadly-serious question/statement! Loved it. I'd use all my + votes for your post if I could. Thanks!
