  • they were giving away 100gb free earlier today …

It's not just for Android. I logged in to check my storage and found that I already had a bonus 3GB (from my Windows phone).

Camera roll bonus – Users will be able to earn 3 GB of extra storage by simply choosing to sync photos from their camera roll to OneDrive using the OneDrive app for iOS, Android, or the built-in Windows Phone function.

    • Beauty, updated the OP.

    • Ditto for me. I have Windows Phone and just logged into OneDrive app and the bonus 3GB was there already. Didn't have to do anything. Looks like the Android phones are getting no love though - poor form MS.

      • have done on my Android and no love

        UPDATE - working now & I have +3gb

  • nvm

  • all good now, cheers!

  • So how much space should I have now? Its a brand new account, and I've auto uploaded via the app. And it says I have 7GB, so has that added the extra 3 or what?

    • It should break it down for you here: https://onedrive.live.com/options/ManageStorage

    • +2

Don't know why you got negged for asking a valid question. To answer, you start off with 7GB on the free plan and then if you get the additional 3GB bonus it takes you up to 10GB.

  • +5

They're hosting it in their brand new data centre

I installed the Android app & it has been uploading all day, but no 3gb bonus for me :(

    • +1

I've also downloaded the android app, uploaded some files and didn't get the 3GB as well.

      • You have to turn on the 'camera backup' feature in the settings of the Android app. As soon as I turned it on, the storage went from 7 to 10gb. You could turn it off straight away, and it stayed that way.

  • Installing the Chrome app also works. You can disable it after you have logged in to OneDrive to claim the Enthusiast Bonus of 3GB.

    • +1

Would you mind sharing the link to Chrome app? All I could find after search is a Skydrive app which hasn't been updated since Sep 2012.

      • That's the one I used.

        Version: 1.0.3
        Updated: September 5, 2012
        Size: 3.89KB
        Language: English

No matter what I do, can't get the free 3GB camera roll bonus!

    • +1

same here. I've tried it on 3 different accounts. "Camera Backup" is on, the "Camera Roll" folder gets set up on OneDrive, but any photos I take with the camera don't get uploaded.
What voodoo spells do you need to get this to work?

      • My photos actually do upload, but no sign of the extra 3GB.

        • Same here… Have 25GB done the auto camera backup iPhone app and haven't got additional storage.

        • +1

          Same on android for me.

        • Another Android, uploaded 160-odd pics via Camera back up in the One Drive app, still no 3gb. I have the default 7gb.

Also uploaded a camera pic via the browser, nothing.

Will try the Chrome plug in later…

      • 24 hours later, my accounts have had 3GB added, though I don't know if that was from the Android app or IOS. I used both - some worked immediately, others were updated later.
        I guess it was just OneDrive teething problems :-}

    • Same here, can't seem to get the extra 3GB.

    • I couldn't either, but mine has just changed after I did this: I opened OneDrive in Chrome and clicked on 'All Photos' on the left, then opened one of the pictures I'd just uploaded. Clicked around in the slideshow/gallery thing for a couple of seconds (deleted a few old pictures, actually), and clicked OneDrive up in the top left corner. Account limit had changed from 7gb to 10gb.

I don't think it will work, maybe it was just coincidental timing. But after refreshing every now and then for the last 4 hours and not seeing any difference, I thought it might be worth somebody else trying?

      • I just tried, didn't work for me though. I did the same stuff & even deleted 1 photo.

Which App did you use for the Camera Upload, eg. iOS, Android etc ?

        • On Android.

  • I just logged in and it says I have 25Gb available, is that the default ?

    • +1

I have 7GB free and pay for an extra 20GB. You must be one of the early adopters that got 25GB free, so yes, it's the default in your case.

    • I think the starter is 7GB. Maybe you claimed some bonuses in the past?

    • +2

you must have an rather old account. MS dropped the default free space from 25GB to 7GB a few years ago.

      • you must have an rather old account.

yep, a very very old account…

I should start using some of this storage….

        • +3

same situation for me… was wondering what the point of the deal was when I got 25GB already for free :p

yay for 18 year old hotmail accounts

        • I have 25GB too with my older personal account. Only 7GB with newer work account.

        • I have 7Gb on my 15 year old account, perhaps i had to use skydrive early on to claim the 25Gb and not just have the account

        • You had to actually claim the bonus, it wasn't applied automatically unfortunately

    • +1

      It's from this:
      https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/68589

04/2012, wow it's been that long.

    • Mmm same here. Also already had the 3gb camera roll bonus for some reason.

Just had a look at the Android app, and it's actually pretty good. Might actually start using it actively now!

  • +6

Whether it's Skydrive, OneDrive, Box, Google Drive or XDrive, none of them have the ubiquity of dropbox. For that reason I'll continue using it alone.

    • for me, it's personal preference and whatever does the job. I sticked with skydrive because of the storage that comes with office 365 university. Now, I got more

      • +7

        I sticked with skydrive

        I stuck with skydrive

        Now, I got more

        Now, I've got more

        • +1

Thanks - too much slang lately

        • +13

          University hasn't helped him.

The killer feature of Dropbox the last time I looked into it was LAN sync. If I upload a file to Dropbox, and another sync'd computer is on the same LAN, it'll sync locally instead of from the cloud. Faster and saves bandwidth.

Does OneDrive do this yet? It is a feature that might coax me to switch. Otherwise, I'm in the same boat as Master Raven here. Dropbox is simply the superior product.

      • If I upload a file to Dropbox, and another sync'd computer is on the same LAN, it'll sync locally instead of from the cloud.

if you don't want to upload to the cloud, why don't you just use a shared LAN drive?

JV where you at! get back on WP!

    • +2

Dropbox is great, but it's only an easily accessible digital cubby hole. Sky/OneDrive does that nearly as well, but also has the integrated and very capable online Office apps, that facilitate creation/editing of document/spreadsheet/presentation/notebook files from any web-capable device. With its generous free space offers and tight Windows 8.1 integration, it's become an irresistable package for me and I suspect, an increasing number of others.

Google Drive was OK in the "Do no evil" days, but those are a distant memory now that the Mountain View greedheads have gamed their own search engine and turned their other services into data-sucking, privacy-ignoring leaches.

      • +1

well said. MS isn't the ultimate evil anymore (can't believe I said that!)

  • I have turned off all access to Skydrive/Onedrive for personal data. Only freely available information may be synced with it.
Be careful when you have a Windows Phone and connect it to your PC. It (as default) transfers all info in Onenote into the cloud. Stopped that one as well.

  • I have a total of 127 now. Want to know what will happen to files after an year if I don't upgrade?

    • From Microsoft's Services Agreement at http://windows.microsoft.com/en-au/windows-live/microsoft-se…

  • Copy is better

  • So many cloud services, don't know which to use..

I have stuff here and there but can't settle on any one.. Any tips?

  • Am I really so stupid?! I have onedrive app on my android device, but I cant see "camera backup feature" nowhere

    • Press your phones menu button

      • That's odd. I have only general settings there

        • Mine is up the top, Click where it says OneDrive and there's a drop down menu, including the Camera back up.

    • Same is the case with me. Installed onedrive app today but couldn't find camera backup feature anywhere. Pressing menu button only reveals settings. In the top dropdown, there are only 3 items: onedrive, recent and shared.

I am on a gingerbread device. Probably this feature is limited to newer android phone only.

      • yep, that's pretty much my case

  • hurray - 25+3Gb now

    • +3

So you got -22Gb at the end.

  • i just checked my storage and it says i have 210gb
how did i get that much?

    • Do you own a Surface device? They get a bonus 200gb

      • Is that the case for the original Surface Pro as well?

      • Is the surface 200gb deal for life? Or just for 1yr?
(thinking if I could login on a surface just once I'd get this deal?)

        • 2 years I think

  • +2

just realized I have 48 GB total, but I prefer to use Google with free unlimited 2K picture uploads.

  • +1

    FORMERLY

edit : cheers big ears :P

    • Well said big head!

  • So, there's reports of Microsoft sending a bonus 20GB for 1 year to those that missed the original 100GB offer. And also they've noticed the bonus 3GB from camera uploads isn't tracking too well either.
    Source

  • Just checked mine and I have the 25gb as I have a very old hotmail account. But it is also showing the 3gb Camera Roll bonus, so I must have activated this some time before. I guess it won't work a second time to give me another 3gb!

  • +1

So I still didn't get my bonus 3gb after wasting my time jumping through their hoops.

I also note that it doesn't have the - only upload on WiFi while charging - option. So it will happily suck your battery dry.

    So imma neg this bs.

    • +1

I'd suggest Microsoft will retroactively enable the 3GB in due course. Have a little patience.

The "only upload on WiFi while charging" also annoys me and hence I've uninstalled it on my phone. This issue however doesn't impact on the validity of the "bargain".

      • -1

In my defence, this is ms, they should be getting it right first time there is no excuse really.

      • I agree with stumo on this, I've wasted time & effort and no reward yet.

OP - in your OP you said it was immediate so obviously MS is inconsistent with applying the 3GB bonus.

At this point it isn't a bargain for some of us as we have followed the requirements and been given nothing.

I've reserved my vote for now & will retroactively apply it when either A: I get something or B: get fed up.

The info here: https://onedrive.live.com/about/en-au/#photos suggests we are eligible.

  • Wondering how old your account needed to be to get 25gb - I've had mine for about 12 years..

    • +2

      e&oe

If you never actually uploaded stuff to your 25 gb drive [that you would have had with your 12 year old email address], they actually dropped it to 7 gb.

This happened maybe a year? or so ago, maybe a bit more…

Recap: you had 25gb, and did not use any of it, so they dropped it to 7 gb.

Happened to me also on a few old hotmail accounts i had, and millions of other people..

      e&oe

      • Well I must be unlucky, my Hotmail account is at least 10 years old, maybe even 15.

I have uploaded files to Sky/One Drive here and there including years: 2005, 2007, 2008, 2011, 2013, 2014 and maybe others and I've only got 7GB.

        • +2

When they went from 25gb to 7gb there were 2 ways you could keep the 25gb:

          1. Have uploaded more than 7gb to skydrive previously.
          2. Have uploaded less than 7gb, but after the announcement of the drop to 7gb you could log in to skydrive and there was a button to click to say that you want to keep the 25gb. This button was only there for 1 week IIRC.
        • Definitely didn't click that button (didn't know about it), bugger missed it, thanks.

        • Luckily I clicked the button thanks to this post.

  • waste of time for only 3gb which doesn't even work

  • Cool thanks worked for me

  • Added Win7 PC last night… no 3GB bonus. Added android today, 3GB came through about 2 hours later. Not worth the time it took.

  • +1

Nice, also includes the free "NSA Premium Backup" service.

    • If you install both Office 365 & Kingsoft Office you will get the added benefit of "MSS Premium Backup" to complement the "NSA Premium Backup". As as an added bonus those on Huawei DSLAMS will get an extra 20GB for free… :)

  • I also didn't get my 3GB yesterday but today I tried turning on my camera backup and I got it finally.
By the way should there be a link on https://www.ozbargain.com.au/wiki/
where people posts their links for referrals just like dropbox?

  • My 3tb bonus has shown up now. Didn't do anything just left it for 24 hours.

    • +3

      3tb nice

      • Must have bought 30 Surface Pros
