no idea what a twin tuner is but is it a good price? staticice says cheapest twin tuner (can't remember brand) was $60ish.

    • +1

It means something like recording one channel while watching another. Although some are a bit dodgy and have twin tuners but don't have that ability.

    • A tuner is the module of a TV, PVR or set-top box which is able to tune television. A normal Television will have a single tuner. A PVR will often have twin or triple tuners.

Having a twin tuner means you can watch one television show while the pvr is recording another television show.

Actually a twin tuner allows you to
      - watch one channel & record a different show from another network. (e.g. Watch ch7 & record Ch10)
      - Some allow you to record two channels from different networks. (e.g. record ch7 & ch10)
      - Better ones allow you to record two show on different networks & watch a third channel on one of the networks your recording. (i.e. Record Ch7 + Ch10 & watch Ch One/Eleven or 7two/7mate/etc

        Wouldn't that require 3 tuners?

        • Wouldn't that require 3 tuners?

No. Sub-channels do not need a separate tuner (eg. ABC1 recording and then watching News24.)

        • Yeah the Tbox is twin tuner. But it had a s/w update mid last year which allows the last point. For digital the TV networks sends all their channels on the one stream. So a single tuner already grabs the stream, if the hardware is up to scratch, it can record one channel & send another channel to the video out.

        • Well there you go. Every day's a school day!

Have to see what I can get WMC to do.

        • WMC?
Presumably you're using a USB tuner then?
I haven't seen any that can access (2) sub-channels (I assume they exist maybe just expensive/uncommon.)

        • No, not using USB tuners and my home setup has nothing to do with this deal so I'll leave it there.

  • The PVR has been listed on OzB before:

    Not much to go on…

    • Hmmm… Never heard of these guys, but took a look at the manual.
It looks good for the price.

Having had Beyonwiz's (and also a couple of cheap other ones) I couldn't live with this but may be good for people with no PVR experience.

AFAIC reliability is the #1 'feature' of a PVR. Looking at http://www.productreview.com.au/p/altech-dsd4121.html I am not filled with a lot confidence. Maybe the optional $79 extended warranty will help! :O
