Seems a good little phone for the $. (don't compare it to your $700 one please)

    • The Woolworths advert says 'Telstra LG Optimus L3+' hence:

      3G Network HSDPA 900 / 2100 is incorrect as this is a Telstra device and therefore 3G Network HSDPA 850 / 2100

In my opinion, it improves 300% if you get it rooted and install an install to SD card app, was able to install 60 mid sized apps, eg ranging from 164kb to 4mb and play space invaders with no lagging, I did install angry birds on SD card and play it with no lagging. Didn't like it out of the box - I could not install many apps

Following methods may/may not work because I haven't tried them

Still says, low on internal memory, there is a program called S2E, but I don't know if it would work on LG, read this:

    Essential Apps

    z4root
    Universal Androot
    Rooting Apps
    Unrooting Apps
    Move to SD Card
    Install to SD Card
    Busybox
Superuser or Supersu - I think Supersu is better
    Root toolbox/toolkit
    Install/manage apk apps
    Root Checking apps
SD erase card apps - be careful to backup anything that was on the card first before doing this

    How I rooted it

I can't really remember what got it rooted, I tried the ones on the phone, and if they didn't work, I tried the ones from the laptop with USB, but be careful NOT TO USE KINGO ROOT - as it steals your IMEI and sends it to china

    Resetting the phone

A forum poster said "don't use factory restore" from settings on a rooted phone, so you would have to unroot it first.

Or an easier way is to use the restore settings in Root Tools/Toolkits for rooted phone, I guess they would work as the apps are specifically for rooted devices, but don't blame me if something goes wrong, so USE AT YOUR OWN RISK

Hundreds of pages on this model on the net, also don't forget youtube and what works with model E400 may also work with this model E400f

    Where to get apps

    Google play/market
or opera mini browser, click on start page box called opera mobile store

The LG australia web page does have recovery tools but I didn't see any stock firmware there

    • If you want to use the S2E program

      WARNING ABOUT THE S2E PROGRAM

      It says:
      S2E works only with CyanogenMod7 CyanogenMod9 and CyanogenMod10

USE AT YOUR OWN RISK ONLY MAKE FULL BACKUP BEFORE INSTALLING. THE APPLICATION CAN DAMAGE YOUR DEVICE

I didn't know before, so i am warning you now

    • Type "how to increase system memory on Lg L3 E400f" or "how to increase memory on LG L3 E400F" in google.
Lots of tutorials but they are risky as it involves installing ClockworkMod, so do them at your own risk
It involves partitioning the SD card so it acts as system/internal memory

      Other essential programs
      • "dimmer" programs as I noticed it got really bright while using at night
        e.g. "screen adjuster"
      • SD Card Speed Boosters - I am trying to find one that works
      • I want to find a "startup manager" now
      • I also want to find a "kill process and stop process" program - Kill process kills the program completely so it doesn't load on startup but it may come back later and close process just closes it temporarily and still loads back up on boot
      • I also want to find a "quick boot" program
      Programs that Release ram/memory/clean cache/cleaners

These are pretty good for releasing ram, killing processes, and clean cache which helps to speed it up

      MoveApps (cleans cache)
Root Tools (various ones - theres a lot)
      Droid Tools Lite
All-In-One-Toolbox (excellent - it also has "remove system apps") - excellent for a free app
Speed Boost Lite, Speed Boost 3D
Although speed boost programs are o.k as they just release ram, cpu etc, be careful with "overclocking" programs as they are risky and can damage your device if you don't know what you are doing

Sometimes when I installed too much all in one go, the phone "got stuck" on the loading of the apps on the SD card, so I long pressed the black front button and the app manager came up, I removed 2 programs and it started working again, then I was able to install more programs later.

Sometimes you get "memory full" unable to install, uninstall a program to get more memory on your phone, but I found out it is out of memory for "that particular program" only. When I dumped it and used another program it installed O.K.

After installing all the essentials like supersu, busybox, adb on a rooted phone, App Manager (Lg phone app) reports:

      Installed applications: 73
      System: 156MB used, 1.93MB free
      Internal: 367MB used, 657MB free
SD card: 42.8MB used, 1.81GB free

I am very happy with this, but I might work on how to increase system memory - kind of getting low - that is if it can be done at all and with no risk to the phone. Even if system memory runs out after I try to install more apps - don't know what will happen - maybe I cannot install anymore/causes memory problems? I don't know what will happen but I don't care as 73 apps is pretty good for this cheap phone

  • +3

Get a Huewwi Y201 $39 instead. More RAM, Memory and is ICS.

    • More ram in LG 1gb vs 512 Y201
Bigger battery in the LG + BT3 + most likely a better camera.

Regardless… both are bang for the buck little smart phones.. :-)

      • The L3's 1GB of "memory" is for storage (Y201 has 4GB). The amount of RAM is so embarrassingly low, it's not even listed on the official spec page! I trust it's 384MB, as listed on GSMArena.

  • Unlocked?

    • No … did you actually read the Woolworths advert?? It says clearly 'Network unlocking fee applies'.

      • How do I unlock my Telstra Pre-Paid Mobile for use on other phone networks?
Telstra Pre-Paid Mobiles (including iPhones) are locked for use only on Telstra's network.

To unlock your mobile for use on other networks, you may need to pay an unlocking fee of $50, $100 or $150 (depending on the phone's model).

To unlock your Pre-Paid Mobile, or check your unlocking fee, follow the steps below:

Step 1: Press * # 0 6 # on your mobile, and write down the code that's shown. This is your phone's IMEI number.

Step 2: Contact the Telstra Pre-Paid Unlocking Centre direct on 1300 720 179, or call 125 8880 and follow the prompts.

If you're calling from overseas, call +61 439 125 888 (international call charges will apply).

You can pay by Credit or Debit Card, or using your Pre-Paid main account balance (not including bonus credit).

If you don't have a Credit or Debit Card or don't wish to pay using your account balance, please visit your nearest Telstra Store to unlock your mobile.

Step 3: You'll be asked for your phone's IMEI code and will then be advised of the unlock fee and payment instructions.

Step 4: Once payment is completed you will be advised of unlocking instructions.

  • Can this run Strava?

  • I need a low cost second phone for SMS/texting only and receiving calls only.

Does this phone do SMS threaded message display (e.g. like iPhones)?

If someone can confirm as this is a must have feature for me.

Please confirm if this phone will be compatible with ALDI sim cards?

Besides this phone are there other models I should consider?
