ACCC to finally target drip-pricing (incremental charges and booking fees)

Best if all it will make it easier to post prices on OzBargain for airfares and events.

  • No, it will just increase prices as airlines add in all the things that used to be optional. I don't want to buy all the options usually.

That's not what being targeted. They are charges that are mandatory but not revealed until you go through the process. Not optional purchases.

As an example they sell concert tickets and at the end they tack on a booking charge. In fact you get charged booking even if you collect at the door, there is no way to avoid it.

I never chose options either. Do you really think they'll increase prices and eliminate options rather than stay competitive? If they wanted to increase prices $10 across the board they could do so at any time anyway. History proves that airline marketing tactics are intended to convince you that they are the victims - "we only make $9 but the airport charged us a huge fee, the bank charged us a huge fee, the overpaid data entry operator charges us a huge fee to input a seat, the phone company charged us an SMS fee, the huge carbon footprint we make in making money from you might not be such a good thing, etc. " - when they really just want to advertise the lowest possible price to compete with other businesses.

For hundreds of years and even today a smart group of people have realised how to integrate unavoidable charges into the sale price - by adding it on. If the bank charges an airline 0.8% all the time for every transaction, a mathematical genius would realise this can be applied to every option they offer. There's no need to remind us that yes, they do pay for credit card transactions, as does every other business in the world. Why not charge us for your office lighting, toilet paper and all the other essentials of running a business. We know and the ACCC know it is all BS because POLI, which often happens to be the only free option, costs MORE for them than a credit card transaction.

BTW, don't be surprised if they make themselves out as the victims when things change and you suddenly get charged a bit extra for the first few months (for example, by taking away free POLI tranactions etc). Ryanair already pulled the same stunt (http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2240390/Anger-Ryanai…).

      • Id up vote you twice, but I only have the one to give.

  • Airlines should have to advertise return flights as we'll
I'm sick of all the adds for cheap airfares that are only cheap one-way.
They should have to advertise the return fairs.

      Why?

    • You might want to use a different airline for the return journey. As long as it's clear whether the bargain is one way or return, I don't see the problem.
