Get 10% off Australia's First Dental Care Plan

15
CF14004

This could be a great alternative or even a relatively cheap 'add-on' to the dental cover you have through your private health insurance.

For an annual membership starting from $59.95, you can get a discount of up to 40% on a wide range of dental treatments and procedures.

All this is on top of whatever rebates you get through your private health cover.

We have written a detailed review of this plan and its potential benefits and we invite you all to read it for yourself here

You can choose to prepay for 2 years upfront and receive a 50% discount on top of paying annually.
However, whatever period you choose to pay for, this voucher code is supposed to give you a further 10% discount.

I'm not sure how long this promotion lasts and this coupon code will be valid for so didn't put an expiry date. However, may I suggest that if this is something that is of interest to you, you act sooner rather than later.

Might want to put an example of the price in the title.

I've encountered patients who sought out a dentist who participated in this scheme, and they complained that the prices were not that much cheaper than the competitors… or the participating dentist would charge extra fees to pad the cost.

This is most apparent when you move from general dentistry to bigger ticket items like root canal therapy (e.g., 415, 416, 417, 418) and crowns (e.g., 613, 615, 618). The Smile prices on the latter are nigh on equivalent to the prices of the clinics I have worked at.

I would visit the dentist(s) in your area who participate(s) in this scheme BEFORE signing up, and seeing if you like them.

    • See my comment to grovesy15 below :)

      • Yeah I checked out the prices, which is why I noted the pricing on things like crowns…

Any dental services not listed within the Smile Fee Schedule will be reduced by 15% off the usual dental fee at the participating dentist you visit.

Thing is… you can EASILY pad your quotation with "extra" codes. Want a crown? Maybe the dentist is happy to charge their regular patients just the 615, maybe a 631 for the temporary. Maybe they'll even throw in the preliminary xray (022) for free. Maybe not.

For their Smile customers, they might bill 071x2 for the upper and lower primary models, 072 for the intraoral photographs for before/after shots, 022 for the preliminary radiograph, 061 to check if the tooth is vital (if not previously RCT), 165 for the desensitizing bond on the tooth, 631 for the temporary crown, 613 instead of the 615 (as it is 15% off their price rather than a standardised price), and 022 for the post-op radiograph (maybe another 072 for the after shot)…

Of course, you will find dentists who will charge their regular patients the full list of the above, but I have found many dentists are not that familiar with what they can and cannot bill for. The presence of a Smile plan may give that operator the motivation to find out exactly what can be billed.

To be honest, any dentist is within their rights to charge for most everything in that second list (maybe not the 071x2, depends if they actually use it for treatment planning), but many just don't because they don't know they can. They would not be charging you for something they did not do, they would merely be less 'generous' than the average dentist, but I would hazard if the average dentist were aware of these codes, you'd find it's more that they were ignorant than generous.

  • Can anyone comment on the prices specifically with examples as well? I.e. Cleaning as a smile member cost you ____, while in the past prior to signing up you paid _____….etc.

Hard to justify with kwchaz's comment in mind, and the lack of cost information on their website. It does seem too good to be true, and very likely that participating clinics jack their prices up 20-40% to offset the smile discount….

    • The breakdown of the various dental fees is outlined here and varies by state.

      They also provide this blurb:
We have listed the Smile dental fees for the most common dental services. Any dental services not listed within the Smile Fee Schedule will be reduced by 15% off the usual dental fee at the participating dentist you visit.

Dental services performed by a participating specialist such as Endodontist, Orthodontist, Paedodontist, Periodontist, or Prosthodontist are reduced by 7.5% off their usual fee.

40% back on what I pay the dentist I trust and have been visiting for the last 15 years…I'm all over that like a fat kid on cake.

I wasn't surprised to read this isn't what they're offering.

Hmmm something in the T&C's that makes me uneasy, you MUST (apparently) tell the surgery when you make your appointment that you are with smile. Look at item c of Member Responsibilities.

You must ensure to inform the participating dental practice that you are a member when making an appointment.

Wondering if this might affect fees, I did a bit of looking around and if this review is correct, it does.

Anyway we decided to try the dentist on their list, over the phone a root canal was costed at $1200 however when I went in it become $1350, then I mentioned Smile and he had another look and then it became $1550!

If they jack up the fees because you're with smile, then the savings may be minimal or non existent.

Do your research people, don't just jump at this because it sounds good. Maybe call your dentist and ask as well, I know I will be.

    • I wouldn't call it doing your research if you base it off one review…especially from productreviews…

As I said, I plan on calling my dentist and asking them about it and suggest others do the same.

    • It's no different to some of the restaurant entertainment vouchers then- tell them you'll be using the vouchers when you order to ensure you receive the lowest quality food possible.

The representation here and on the Smile.com.au site is that this is "Australia's First Dental Care Plan"

Dentacare commenced in 1983 in Victoria and has since grown from strength to strength and is now available in all capital cities and some country areas Australia-wide. http://www.dentacare.com.au/faq.htm

    So which was first???

with a Union Shopper card Dentacare is a lot cheaper per year. Some of the dentists are the same in my area and the fees listed for services seem to be close to equal (the few I looked at were a few dollars difference - smile was cheaper for one thing dearer in another).

  • Friend tried smile and dentist sneakily inflated his prices so there was virtually jo saving.
    Beware.

  • I received an offer for this in the mail a few months ago for a buy 1 year get 2 deal.

I called several dentists in my area and asked for the price of a check-up and clean - none were cheaper than smile rates, including the dentist I actually went to with the Smile card in the end. So we saved the 2 year membership fee almost in our first visit (me and the wife).

I suppose for some it is worth it and others it's not.

  • State the bargain.

    • 10% off!!!!

      • from a dentist who charges an annual fee!?! Puhahahaha.
