Speed camera flash any fines?

Yesterday night I was in a situation while driving when I reached a red light, I fully stopped at a red light, and at some point, I thought the light changed green, so I nudged the car a little and braked realising it was still on red, then The red-speed camera right behind me flashed twice. Does anyone know if I will receive a ticket? Cause obviously I didn't speed or run through a light, if I do, is there anyway is lift the fine? Cheers.

How far over the line did you go?

A neighbour borrowed our car, and went through a red light.

When the fine turned up in the mail there were 2 pics attached, one of the car crossing the line, and the other of it having passed through the intersection.

As the cameras are apparently coordinated, the one on the other side should not register you actually passing through the intersection.

    • what you said is correct imo, thats what the second flash is for. But didn't they charge you like $15 or something for the photos?

      • Photo came with the fine.

I have heard it generally only applies if your rear axle is over the stop line, but like I said, that's only what I've heard.

Yes to this. I have received fine (most regretful thing ive done financially) and it described that action after the red signal was on for a split second (yes you even get a split seconds grace!).

I believe the photos are reviewed anyhow as the cameras can play up at times, so OP should be fine.

  • I know of places where the camera flash regardless if it's taken a photo

Why? Because I thought I got caught and was convinced I didn't do anything wrong, so I went back and watched if again

I suggest you do the same if you are concerned

I recall noticing this too, with some cameras. They seemed to go off regardless of whether there were any cars in the intersection once the light turned red.

  • Only my front bumper was sticking out, when I accelerated I breaked straight away, it flashed me after breaking

Well your not supposed to have your front wheel over regardless so don't be surprised if some power tripper sends a fine. Don't stress about it though it either comes or it doesn't.

If it comes send a letter explaining your situation and ask them to waive it, they might do it.

Front bumper is not the front wheel… so long as the front wheel is behind it is ok.

    • +1

What did u break, the camera or the rule? In both cases, you will be fined :) …. Its 'brake' not 'break'

  • +1

Should be ok. the camera takes photos at different times.

I've had the same thing happen, except at a railway crossing (yes in Adelaide we have revenue raising speed cameras/ red light cameras on many of our railway crossings) - I called an info line and was told that all photos are manually processed so if they see your front wheel on the line and you are going 0.01km/h they wont issue a fine - out of interest I waited and waited and a fine never arrived.

I'm not sure what state you're in, but I believe in Victoria, there is a difference in penalty between going over the white line which possibly obstructs pedestrians and running a red and traversing the intersection. Obviously, the latter is more severe in terms of fine and demerits.

So I suppose if you're going to get copped any way, since they have you over the line on a red, tell them what happened and see if you can either be given a warning, or get done for obstructing a pedestrian crossing.

How did you "think" the light had turned green?

Thank god you didn't hit any pedestrians crossing the road!

    • Why do some people stop when the lights are green?, I've been behind cars who have done this.

How did you "think" the light had turned green?

Dropping acid and driving isn't safe, kids.

  • You will get no fine…….it happened with me twice and have not received any fine since last 4 months….

  • 2 photos where taken after I accelerated least 1-2km right after I hit the breaks. I was behind the line, then In front of the line, I think both tires where over the lines. If tickets are issues is the only way to resolve it is going to court or the payment officer can do something if I talked to them?

    • ive had this happen before (in SA). you will have to ask for the fine to be reviewed because they are not manually reviewed before sending. once they realise you didnt go through the red light they will take the fine back.

If you accelerated 1-2km then you definitely got caught.

  • +2

Wait until you get something… worrying about might right now is not worth it.
Those cameras also record your speed and it should show you are stopped in the second shot… if so… no worries.

What's done is done. Just wait two weeks and see if you get the letter.

  • +1

Happened to me before as well. I got no fine.

    • Yep same thing exactly as you described, no fine

  • +2

but if they can see you holding a mobile phone in the picture… ;)

      Was just checking OzB officer…

  • Keep all your details. Photo fines can take weeks or months to arrive. If it does, you can request production of the photos.

  • +2

That is what the second photo is for - to see if you did actually proceed through/into the intersection.

You'll be fine. (better than getting a fine).

    • +1

why do they call them "fines" anyway….. a better term would be "Sh@#houses"

  • I don't think so. Same thing happened to me once, my front wheels stopped maybe 50cm past the line. FLASH, but the car needs to basically be mostly over the line for the camera to get the right angle to photo your plate. I'd say you're safe.

  • Same happened to me. I never got a fine for it.

  • For the fine to be valid, they need photos showing you breaking the line and then actually going through the intersection.

Just being slightly in front of the line is not cause for an expiation notice.

  • Strangely, same thing for me. Driving back after dropping the gf home. stopped at light, must've caught a glimpse of green elsewhere on side of my eyes, but mistook my lights for green, took off from the line. I was slowly rolling forward luckily and not gunning it, but for some reason I never got a fine and i never thought I saw a light flash.

So I don't know if you've completely stoppeda t the lights, and then slowly take off if it's too slow to cause the camera to flash?

or perhaps if another side was green to go through the box, and i started moving instead, does that mean the cameras no longer snap you entering the box because it thinks you're one of those cars moving into the main box? Can the cameras differentiate between whether you're traffic moving legally e.g. your light was green, versus if another car from another line moves into the box?

My theory is it can't, and that once the lights are green for one side, the fact that I moved slowly through the red light it takes you as being one of the cars just driving through from the green side as per normal?

Could be wrong though. Still haven't got a fine in the last month or two, so fingers crossed it's not delayed!

    • Define 'box'? You mean intersection, right?

      • Yes

  • Wait and see if you actually get a fine in the mail

  • I had a different issue with a 'safety' camera, where it flashes when I went through the green and under the speed limit. No fine arrived.

But I was panicking at the time and had consulted a police officer.
She said that the machines are not completely automated and that there will be someone to review the photos of the offense. If the reviewer looks at your photos and sees it still reasonably behind the line then hopefully he will not proceed to fine you.

  • I've been in the same situation, you wont get a ticket.

I've seen a guy on a bicycle setting off the cameras haha

      neat idea :P

    So, OP~

Did you get a ticket? Insert suspense music
