Country : Yemen - Mocca Matari Region : Area surrounding Sana’a, Central Yemen. Extremely remote villages and extremely dangerous to foreigners.
      Producer : Ahmed Al-Hamdani
      Altitude : 1900 -2200 masl Varietal : Typica
      Harvest: Dec/Jan 13/14
      Processing: Natural/Dry processed. Sun dried
      Cupping Score : 88.75
      Total Production : 1000 bags

Cupping notes : This new Matari has intense floral and chocolate flavours. Spicy and fruity aromas with a great spicy sweet finish. Its sure to make an impression!
Yemen is one of the world’s bastions of natural processing. One of the first places in the world to ever produce coffee commercially, it has always been dry processed, due to the lack of water in the arid mountains. Coffee is typically handpicked from semi-wild plantings, and dried on the stone roofs of village houses. Our Yemen Matari undergoes extensive sorting for an unusually clean cup. “Mukha” is the old port of Yemen, from which this famous coffee has long been exported, leading the common name of “Yemen Mocha”.

Yemen coffees have an unmistakeable character, a depth and intensity in its fruit driven flavours and a rich, creamy body which few coffees can match. There is a certain wildness inherent in Matari coffee also, reminiscent of the early days of trade and exploration, the experience of coffee in a regional souk or street cafe.

  • Is it a milk coffee?

Works great all round. I'm drinking one right now as a latte but also had an espresso earlier this morning. ;-)

      • How many coffees do you drink a day?

        • Too many! I cut back to 3-4 but now I'm back nearer 5-10 haha. Someone's got to test them!! ;-)

        • How about yourself Tommy?

      • Can you draw a cat on the box that the beans come in?

Busted open my bag of the Brazilian yesterday from the last deal you posted. Freaking delicious.

Is there much of the Yemen available/will I be able to order it in a few weeks when I've finished my current batch of beans?

    • +1

Great stuff!! I'm enjoying the Brazilians at the moment as well. Been popular in the cafe! Can't give any guarantees about the Yemen in a few weeks but I'll try and offer the attachment onto any upcoming deals and give as much chance as possible to make this coffee available to you guys.

      • Fortunately, I have too much of your product on hand at the moment. Reoffer of Yemen down the track would be appreciated.

Opened up the Honduras San Vicente which arrived in the office this morning, thanks! The machine has been running all morning as everyone loves those beans! Looking forward to trying the Brazilian!

        • Excellent, great to hear and thanks for the feedback. The Brazilian's a nice coffee also! We have some extremely rare geisha coffees just landed so keep an eye out on new arrivals on our site. Might not be best suited for the office though as they're a bit pricey ;-)

        • Ha, thanks for the tip! I try to be a good boss!

        • Sounds like it ;-) You must have a lot of happy staff with more energy ;-)

  • Side note - i've got about $700 to spend on a coffee machine. I'm no barista, so I'd prefer something that's easy to use.. any ideas?

    • I'm sorry but our machines start from about 1200 upwards and there is a bit of a gap which we haven't filled yet in regards to our domestic range.

Because of this I can't say I've had much hands on experience with the domestic machines around that price point so wouldn't be able to give good or reliable advice.

      • I would highly suggest, if you can - stocking silvias. They have a good reputation and quite importantly, they have actually been ozbargain discounts before - so they synergise well with this crowd.

    • At that price point, you cannot go wrong with a rancilio silvia.

Otherwise, check out coffeesnobs forum for possible second hand machines such as that in your area.

That being said, in both cases, you will need to step up your grinder. The silvia often needs a pretty fine grind that you might not get with anything under a sunbeam em0480.

I myself have an isomac machine (google it) second hand for 750 with grinder from coffeesnobs.

There are bargains to be had.

      • Ohhhhh… Another Isomac jockey! ['Venus' here]

Good advice. Silvia is a sound entry level machine - quite similar to an Isomac (less chrome). And a decent grinder is a big, big help.

coffeesnobs.com.au is a good place to get informed advice from people using coffee machines at home. Enthusiastic and well intentioned. Troll free too.

        • Ahh.. I have the zaffiro - in my opinion, I think the coffee out of the silvia is more interesting, comparing the two.

  • How long would you say it would be OK to keep these 1kg bags before opening? Before flavour may start to lessen?

    • +2

After roasting it's best to wait about 4-5 days for the beans to degas and flavours to develop. Different coffees can peak at different times but in general it's at it's freshest only the first 2-3 weeks and then you will notice that the flavour profiles will slowly start to drop off and the crema will reduce.

On the occasion that I have drunk coffee which is 1 month old it still tastes a damn site better than what you will find on the shelf in the supermarket but it all depends on how much of a coffee snob you are ;-)

      • Ok cool thanks for that.

I would consider myself just above medium levels of snobness so I am sure I would still accept a 1month coffee.

        I think I will give it a shot :)

Bargain, again. except I just bought 2kg pack from you a few weeks back.

  • Is this the same Yemen coffee you had earlier last year?

    • No this one cups better. Last year sanani mocca, this year mocca matari

Thanks for the good deal Manna beans, I've bought a couple times before and it is excellent quality, and its pretty much like organic. I purchased today so I guess I'll get it sometime later next week cause I'm all the way over in Perth, worth the wait thought! so much better than anything I've ever tasted

Thanks Davo, glad your enjoying. Your order would have either been shipped yesterday or will be this Monday and as we are using Australia Post overnight express you could quite easily receive on Monday or Tuesday as the majority of the time it is an overnight service unless you are more regional. You can check this out by punching in your post code on their site. Either way you will definitely receive tracking on Monday.

      Cheers

  • Bit the bullet, bought some coffee :) Have to get my grinder up to work now! haha :)

OP these are sent just as beans yeah? Not pre-ground?

    • Yes, these deals are for whole bean :-) Welcome aboard
