Lagavulin 16 Year Old Scotch Whisky, 700ml for $84.95 from Dan Murphy's

940

This drink WILL make you Scottish. You open the bottle and the smell hits you. This ain't no frilly Scotch. This Scotch is going to put hair in places you may not be accustomed to having it.

You take a sip and your voice drops. You take a second sip and suddenly you have an oversized sword in your left hand. At this point your wife is confused and the kids are scared, but there's no turning back. After the third sip the accent comes. Slowly at first. An 'aye' here, a 'lad' there. But slowly takes a back seat after the fourth sip. Your accent is now full steam, you look out the window and Sean Connery nods in approval. A kilt falls from the ceiling as you realize you're now naked. You stand proud, take the fifth sip, and your wife looks at you with hunger in her eyes. It's a great day to be a Scotch drinker.

This is a signature 16 year old malt has a strong peat, smoke and seaweed nose that is followed by a nutty complexity and light fruitiness. In the mouth characters of Charcoal, dry woodiness and iodine followed by chilli chocolate and a hint of toffee.

It normally sells for about $104.95, which is a saving of $20. This will probably be the cheapest it will be for the next few months until it comes on special again, and then it may not be as cheap as this. Don't miss out on this great deal on a great whisky! Don't forget, if you do buy online, you can use some of the cashback websites(referral link) to get some back.

its $85 at liquor land… has been for a couple of weeks - great scotch… great price but it is a regular discount to this price at liquor land - still + from me… did anyone get the talisker 10 yo for $40 at rosehill?

    • Can also use staff discount at Liquorland. You can't at Dans or First choice.

  • +1 because this is a brilliant whiskey. I grabbed two bottles at First Choice around xmas for similar price, maybe a tad cheaper from memory. Worth the $85 imo.

  • What happens after the sixth sip

  • -1

NOT SCOTCH Whisky is the name ;) Talisker is better IMO

    • No, its Scotch Whiskey because its distilled in Scotland….

Noobies be warned, this is a veryyyyy smokey whisky

      • My favorite kind!

Scotch whisky is spelled without an "e".
Irish whiskey, bourbon whiskey and Canadian whiskey have an "e".

Whiskies are typically named with or without an "e" depending on their style. Japanese whisky (like the Yamazaki I just knocked over ;-) ) is spelled like that because it is similar in style to Scotch. But, of course, not being distilled in Scotland, Japanese whisky is NOT Scotch.

        • -2

Whisky is the correct name considering it originates from scotland and I am scottish I do NOT need to call it scotch whiskey and yes also no need for the e.

        • +1

There's nothing wrong with the title Scotch Whisky. Just because YOU'RE Scottish, it does not mean that this is NOT SCOTCH Whisky. It says Scotch Whisky on the goddarn bottle. You're not in Scotland. You're in Australia. What relevance is there that anyone should care what YOU call it? Does typing SPORADIC words in capital letters HELP make the point MORE VALID?

        • -2

SURE does just trying to give you the proper name its NOT scotch and you assume I am in Australia mate…

        • +2

A True Scotsman would call it a malt not a whisky

        • -1

Maybe your're not here, but this is a product for the Australian market and this is an Australian website. Maybe you should contact the Lagavulin distillery and tell them that they are making some kind of mistake because they have printed SCOTCH WHISKY on the actual bottle and that YOU know much better than THEM. Can you explain to me how they could make such a huge mistake?!

        • Whisky is the correct name considering it originates from scotland and I am scottish I do NOT need to call it scotch whiskey and yes also no need for the e.

          shrug

I just call it whisky as well, because anybody I'm likely to be talking to know that I don't drink that other shyte.

But this is a public forum. We need to be specific. This is a deal on whisky… and more specifically, Scotch whisky.

If you don't like being understood by others, that's your problem.

Drink enough and it'll be Wishkey.

Funniest post I have ever read!! Lol.

Great deal too… This is definitely a scotch worthy of kings. Have it when u get home at night and your troubles float away in a sea of oily peat. After having a glass my wife won't sit near me because of peat-breath… So yea… Enough said… Awesome whisky!

Ps. Anything that works as a wife repellent has many uses! Wanna play xbox… Have a glass. Wanna be alone… Have a glass. Wanna have a drink… Have a glass.

    Anyway, thumbs up… Great deal!

awesome scotch… I seem to be building my scotch collection from all the ozbargain posts lately. thanks guys!

  • Definitely one of my favourite Whiskies, but I've never paid more than $85 in this country.

    Was there an increase recently?

    • Same, never paid more than 85

  • Got a 700ml bottle from Melb Airport duty free for $79

  • I love my scotch but I wasn't overly fond of the Talisker (it was around $60 from memory). I don't know whether to try this or not. A comment made on Amazon said this was the best <$100, better than Macallan (which I love).

    • +4

If you're looking for something like Macallan then you'll want to try malty smooth Speyside whiskies. Talisker is a fairly strongly peated whisky (that is the barley has been smoked with peat before fermenting). Lagavulin is a whisky from an island called Islay (pronounced "eye-lah"). Islay whiskies are almost always peated.. so chances are if you didn't like Talisker, you probably won't like Lagavulin (or any other Islay malts - Laphroaig, Bunnahabhain, Ardbeg, Kilchoman etc).

You should try some other speysiders like Cragganmore or Glenrothes or Balvenie or Mortlach (if you can find one). Or even some gentle Highlanders like Dalwhinnie.

      • Laphroaig and Glenmorangie original FTW!

      • Awesome info, cheers. Your'e spot on, I really didn't like Laphroaig, but loved the Glenrothes I picked up from duty free.

        • No woccas.. If you're in Melbourne you should check out Whisky and Alement (no association) - good place to try out a few whiskies before you blow lots of money on a bottle.

Pay no heed to peat-heads that try to act superior. It really is an acquired taste and at the end of the day peated whisky drinkers are a vocal but very small segment of the whisky market. It took me a very long time to learn to like peated whisky.. but kinda like oysters after years of hating it one day something just clicked.

        • Definitely an acquired taste, but in saying that, I did finish the bottle of Talisker. Laphroaig I could not finish the glass.
I am in Melbourne so will be following that up (guessing it's a whisky bar in the city).

        • It is indeed. The older bar staff there are pretty knowledgeable too. If you go in on a quiet day tell them what you like they can recommend a few malts you should think about trying, and give you a sniff of the bottle.

    • +1

Talisker is less peaty and more briny. I think they are both great.

  • +2

This is my go-to single malt - you can't do much better for the price.

I thought it had been around this price at DM for a while though.

  • +2

Need to be 18 years old to get into the store.

  • +2

This is a great drop but unsure if this is the new discounted rate as it has been under $80 fairly recently.

I've got a liquorland warehouse discount docket on my coles docket - it says "Get $ 10 off when you spend $ 50 at Liqourland WArehouse store in one transaction, valid until 11 March 2014".

That means I can get it for $ 75, right? Is this really worth $ 75? What brand of Cola do you think is the best to mix with this whisky? LA Ice Cola or should I just buy a Home Brand Cola?

      • +5

Yikes. This is not a scotch to be mixing with any kind of cola.

But then, I feel like your post is a very elaborate troll. :p

  • Isn't this the normal price? I bought a bottle for my dad during Christmas for this price.

  • My Favourite Whisky!! The description made my day….cheers mate!

  • Headed to Dan's to price match and use the Amex cashback offer. Out of stock. Bugger.
