Best graphics card for under $450 - Help

As title states. Would like a graphics card that would be able to handle BF4, etc @ high settings. Will be running with Intel i5 4570 (1150) and msi motherboard.
Thanks!

R9 280X or GTX 770 are both good choices for under $400.

Both of these cards will nut out BF4 and all other modern titles at Ultra, which is even better than High, so you'll be right with either of these two cards.

Personally, which one you should go for is up to you, both are neck and neck in most tests, so there's really no difference either way. I would probably go with the 280X just because it's a bit cheaper and I'm really happy with my R9 290X, but I've had very good nVidia cards in the past as well.

    • Thanks mate! Do you think the MSI H87M-G43 Motherboard will fit well with the graphics card?

Provided your case and layout is good, yeah no worries.

make sure your power supply will handle it :D

    • Antec 650w 80 gold rated PSU good enough?

      • for a single card setup should be fine

        • replace "should be fine" with "is overkill" :)

Just buy an PS4 or XBOX if its for gaming, dont bother mining cyrpto coins as the power costs and the heat of 24x7 just isnt worth it…

Why would anyone who isn't badly brain damaged want to replace a PC with a Xbox or PS.

  • I'd suggest AMD card (r9 280x as an earlier poster suggested) if your going for BF4 as it has mantle support.

    • I compared the r9 290x to the palit geforce 770 and it seems the geforce won??? I used gpu compare.

The 280x and 770 is about neck in neck in terms of performance, but with Mantle enabled in BF4 the AMD will outperform the Geforce. But regardless of your choice, both cards will handle BF4 on 1080p Ultra at a solid 60 fps.

      • Both are very comparable. It is completely your choice. They will out perform is different circumstances but not enough warrant an "X card is better then Y card". Each card is stronger in different areas, but overall, both are pretty much even.

      • you sure you put the right cards in?

in benchmark figures only…290x > 770 (in most cases)
        http://gpuboss.com/gpus/Radeon-R9-290X-vs-GeForce-GTX-770

280x is more comparable to 770

though as mentioned by others, each card has its own strengths and cross comparisons should not be made in this manner

go with what features you would prefer to decide if you want AMD or NVidia

  • Look at the games you want to play currently, the associated benchmarks and make a decision. Realistically you will be fine with either choice.

Hi, not sure if the OP has bought anything yet, but lets not forget that the gtx 770's dont have support for directX 11.2 and the new 280X line does, given the fact that 280X's are just AMD 7970 ghz editions rebranded.

If $450 is ur limit, i would probably get this:

    http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&p…

sapphire toxix editions are always raved about, only real draw backs would be the 2yr warranty, the possible 7970 coil whine issue, not sure if its present in this model of card and the size of the card, its very long.

The 770's series also has a 256bit (i think) memory interface compared to the AMD 384bit, also AMD cards have more ram over their competitors and your wondering how important this is?

Example, more memory generally requires more bandwidth, on a 1920x1080 comparison both card models in general are similar, but when you bump up the resolution to say, 2650x1440, the 770 struggles and you will see the 280X shine even greater.

No doubt Nvidia focuses more on lower TDP and better performance per watt and they may run a bit cooler, but in the middle market AMD is still king.

The 280's/7970's run hot and whine and AMD's drivers are nothing to write home about. DirectX 11.2 is irrelevant. I'd get a 780 minimum OP, preferably Gigabyte Windforce GHz.

      • But the limit is $450… I have already bought the 770 :)

First off, you obviously didnt read the OP's post properly, second, better DirectX support is actually very relevant, just reading your small post literally screams NVIDIA Fanboi, since there is no explaining why you even suggested to the OP to purchase a 780, I already noted the coil whine, heat issues are generally stock reference card issues, not aftermarket cooler cards which most of them are now.

Also custom PCB's by the likes of ASUS, EVGA etc have been known to fix the coil whine issue of the 7970/280X reference design cards.

Also noted at what i think was GDC, AMD advised DirectX 12 support for AMD GCN Supported cards. And if you really think there's no "relevance" for DirectX, then you obviously haven't seen the differences yourself.

On a different note, its good to hear that the OP got a 770, they're good mid-high range cards with great performance.

        • Thank you Aarent. Didn't know there was such a large computer community here!

Direct X 11.2 is irrelevant. I didn't mention DirectX 12 you spastic. AMD's drivers are poor and their GPU's run hot and loud. There is a reason they are so cheap.

    • coil whine is no issue if you have speakers/headsets, literally can't hear it and it occurs like once a week for a brief second lol
