[Resolved] Replacing car brakes - need some advice

I am doing full servicing to my car (HONDA CIVIC) today. They said I've to change all my brakes and it'll cost around 700. This is my first car and I've no experience. Is it too expensive or is there any other places cheaper in Melbourne near Chadstone?

  • It's probably about right for pads, disks, and labour. Or are they talking pads only?

  • includes everything. I checked with Kmart. They said 580$. Should I go for them?

Take the cheaper option I suppose. Changing brakes isn't rocket science. I used to do it on my old cars as and when required.

you want to trust the things that stop you slamming into the car in front of you….. to a discount chain whos well known for selling/using the cheapest and dodgiest crap? erm…. no id stick away from kmart….

ask what brand of pads they are going to use. cheap pads arent cheap in the long run. they can give poor performance (like not working any more once you get to the bottom of a hill) and can also wear out of your brake rotors faster meaning those need replacing. also check with the first place and see if they are machining or replacing rotors versus simply slapping new pads onto old rotors.

brakes is a good upsell/money making extra for repairers. be cautious.
how old is the car, how many kms?

    • its 2006 model and 200,000 km

Midas quoted us less than half the dealership costs; unfortunately this was just after the dealer had supposedly started the work even though we told them not to.

Quite a few near to you: https://goo.gl/maps/OIZug

    • Wait until they've finished and then say you won't pay for it, worked for a friend of mine. Serves them right for trying to get extra cash of you. BTW when it happened to my friend there was now warning just an extra couple hundred dollars on the bill on pickup.

    • Yeah, you don't EVER pay for work they do, if you don't directly authorize it first. That's a scam as old as cars themselves.

I'd get a second opinion on the brake change recommendation.

If you go to Kmart and tell them to change the brakes, they'll do it regardless, any mechanic will.

History has taught me, that mechanics interpretation of when something is low, differs greatly.

    • I went to get my brakes replaced at Kmart.

The first thing they did was to do a brake inspection.

big difference between changing your brake pads and the actual rotors. pads you can easily do yourself, at a cost of around $50-70 each pair of pads front and rear, rotors are much more expensive and tricky to do yourself (machining etc. if you've damaged them because you've worn the pads right and out damaged the braking surface or they're just worn out)

seriously it completely pisses me off the ridiculous ripoff that mechanics charge for what is an essentially one hour job.

check out youtube and learn to DIY, put these asswipes out of business. honestly i've seen WOMEN change brake pads. WOMEN.

    $700 is completely taking advantage.
I would expect to pay $400-500 tops with rotors.

I just changed all pads and front rotors on a camry for $160

    • I would expect to pay $400-500 tops with rotors.

im guessing your talking about something like falcodoor (falcodoormry? dosnt really have the same ring) rotors? ever priced exotic car's rotors? biiiiig difference

Maybe call http://www.gslrallysport.com/ to ask for cost of rotors/brake pads? Then if cheap order them and find a mech to fit them. I have a Mazda 3 MPS, recently Mazda quoted to replace my front brake pads/rotors $983 roughly. I told them not to change it.

I called above and ordered DBA 4000 T3 rotors and Remsa brake pads (both better than oem). It was about $520 delivered and then only $88 for my local mechanic to fit them. I'm sure you can get parts cheaper for a civic and save heaps of money. Never get the stealer ships to do it for you.

      +1230742875934865 for GSL.

Bought plenty of rotors and pads off them, they've never failed to deliver on time. Take my last order through their eBay store, bought and paid for it on Thursday morning and the pads appeared Friday morning in Sydney.

  • Get a quote from Supercheap Auto for Bendix pads and new Rotors.
My Camry rotors were PBR and $38 each

I think they r using honda pads so that's the price

  • You often can machine rotors. Much cheaper than replacing them.

    • not sure about hondas specifically but a lot of jap cars just dont have the meat on them to machine them legally. often they only have a couple of MM between new and legal min.

    • While it seems like a good idea. 10,000 km later, the rotor will be warped again because it is thinner and cannot take the heat. In the long run, it is best and most economical to change rotor when it needs to go.

I got bendix gct front break pads for my falcon for $57 and changed it myself. It takes less than an hour and involves removing the tyre and opening just 2 other bolts. No big deal if rotors need not be changed.

Btw, dealer quoted me 450 for this.

I paid $400 for mine, which included everything. New disc brakes (because I could not get them machined) and pads.

Go to a brake specialist and get them to give you a condition report. Might cost a little, $30-50, but will give you a better idea on what replace the brakes means. Will also then give you the opportunity to shop around for prices and make sure you are getting prices for the same work.

My suggestion is to actually have a look underneath the car and visually inspect to see how much is left on the brake pads. Do you really need to change them right now? You should also be able to measure the thickness of the brake pads and rotors with a set of calipers or a ruler. I can't tell you what the minimum allowed thickness is for your car though. You should be able to find that out easily enough. Do your homework and it might save you a few bucks.

  • Brakes Plus and go with the second to cheapest pads and get the machined disks…should come in around $200-$300. I'd be surprised if you had to do all 4 brakes…usually it's only the front 2 as the rears don't wear anywhere near as much.

and these days…brake pads have a tell-tale when they need replacing…they squeal like a stuck pig, this isn't metal on metal…it's a little metal shim designed to drive you to thinking your brakes are gone.

    • can comfirm just replaced my front pads on ford BA
      back pads were almost new
front pads had about 1cm on them but squeaked

Thanks for the suggestions, I went with Kmart for 580$ since I was in a rush and couldn't give time to find some others. Hopefully I'll try to replace it on my own next time.

Did mine at Kmart for the same price. Kmart is one of the cheapest.

Don't know whether they still have it, perhaps worth checking!

It's a religious requirement amongst tradespeople that says you must try to charge every customer, regardless of the original issue, enough to pay at least a full day's wage. Ever since I became stingy and started doing everything myself I find it hard to go ahead with almost any quote but I'm sure there are people with more money than time. When you see them work 33 minutes and charge you $500 in labour costs…
