  Does it need any batteries? Otherwise it could damage the driving device due to excess loading?

    I doubt it will damage the device.

    This device has the specs and capacity to support up to 5 earphones/headphones.

      He means your ipod/iphone etc. Because there are too many ear phones to be driven, the output resistance is much lower, and output current might be too high for the player. Also the volume will be much lower than normal, no sure if it's going to damage the player anyway.

    i reckon that headphones/earphones that draw more power will take volume away from the other headphones/earphones. I.e. it wont be equal volume.

    also, the overall power will be reduced, so you wont get the f ul volume split 5x ways.
