Hi guys,

Bought a Mac recently and have been looking for a slim hard drive to carry around. Amazon had these drives on special a couple of weeks ago and seems like the prices have dropped again so I jumped on it.

These are PC and MAC compatible, USB 3.0 and have a very low profile. Comes with a 3-year warranty, although I'm not sure so whether that's back-to-base or covered by Amazon.

Hope that's enough info to go on!

  • Is this a 'bargain'?

I know these are available locally for around AU$120

However, other than thickness and colour, is this Slim II model 'better' than other Toshiba and other major brand 1TB USB 3.0 2.5" externals? (That sell for under AU$80 locally)

  • Yup not really a bargain… not at the moment anyway.

This deal is cheaper, local and has a bigger capacity.

    • yeah, 50% more capacity for 20% less $

      • -1

        It's a completely different product.

It's like someone posting a deal for a Macbook pro and someone complaining that you can get a PC with the same specs for $300 cheaper.

        • Yeah i know, but we're comparing specs and price not saying that the product is the same.

Think of it as presenting an alternative.

        • Agreed. I own one of these hard drives and it compliments my ultrabook nicely, since I'm able to slip it easily in with the laptop sleeve whilst my larger portable hard drive will not fit.

I would equate it to similar to the ultrabook-to-regular laptop argument: you're paying more for less weight and greater portability.

And just a quick comparison in specs between the Toshiba Canvio Slim and the linked Seagate (yes I know it's a higher capacity but it's listed as the same specs for the 1TB),

          Toshiba: 107(L) x 75(W) x 12(H) mm, 155g

          Seagate: 152(L) x 84(W) x 27(H) mm, 310g

Quite a difference on all dimensions, particularly height/thickness.

(Disclaimer: I got the 1TB new for $80 on ebay)

  • +1

I definitely agree it isn't a bargain compared to some other drives with larger capacities, but its the cheapest price for this particular drive right now (> $100)
But it is unique in that it's ultra slim and partners up with both Macs and PC's quite well

    • any hdd can work with macs. mac compatible drives are just a marketing scam targeted at people who are computer illiterate

  • Bought an external HDD (Seagate if that matter) from Amazon and it stop working after 1.5 years. I was told by Amazon that i have to contact Seagate for warranty, send the drive to Seagete at my own cost (~$18+) and it is returned in ~1 weeks for a refurbished drive.

Is it buying local better? At least save myself some postage fees.
