Good deal. But isn't the new model due out in April?

    • +1

      Lies. It's all lies. ;-)

    • Jim Dalrymple says its not coming anytime soon, but there is a new model identifier in 7.1.

      • Where in 7.1?

  • +4

It's a great price, but I'm concerned with DSE having seemingly non-stop sales. I'd better use my store voucher before they go bust!

    • +1

this item price was out in the US a month ago - it's almost certainly from Apple pushing out stock and not DSE

    • these sales came up when they were purchased outright from Woolworths. they have only gone stronger and stronger. IMO i think these were put in place to retain and grow their customer base. i think you;'ll be fine with your vouchers.

  • Can an external HDD be connected to this or XBMC installed?

  • -2

Usually $20 itune card is worth $15 value, wish they had reduced $20 from the cart. Though Apple TV is available at $79 at apple store but it is refurbished item

    • +1

Check the refurbished .au store - there's none available. Otherwise they are $109 through Apple.

This is Apple TV 3 can't jailbreak means no use

  • +2

Thinking I might buy another one….have one with Netflix on it and can't remember the last time I watched free-to-air TV.

  • +5

I am anti Apple as in I don't want their stuff on my phone, but this device is great. I can watch Netflix, Hulu Plus and the wife can screencast or whatever it is called watch her Youtube soapies on the TV. Definitely worth buying.

    • +2

Same here tessel. The wife screencasts stuff from her phone and Mac all the time to the TV (hence the thought about buying another one).

  • Great find earth!!

  • I would also try and get a refurbished model (brought 2 a month ago).

To play my own content from my own Media Server at home I use Plex Media Server. Look them up.

    • +4

      (brought 2 a month ago)

      Where did you bring them?

  • +1

Why would DickSmith advertise "also available in David Jones"

    • +2

DJ outsourced their electrical section to DSE

  • +1

Yes there will be new model out coming soon.

It's been like that for literally an entire year.

wouldnt the Tronsmart MK908 be a better option for ~ $50?

  • +1

Anyone know what happens if you have two or more on the same network? i.e. streaming from Macbook or Ipad etc

    • +2

You can name them, as in Loungeroom and Bedroom to indicate where they are. You will just have more than one source in the AppleTV icon to stream to.

    • +2

You can also stream music to multiple Apple TVs and play simultaneously.

      • -5

I don't think you can stream to multiple units simultaneously.

        • You can stream music to multiple units. (i do this)
However, you will need to do it through a computer using iTunes, not your iPad or iPhone.
(Well, i haven't yet figured out how to do it through the iPad or iPhone)

  • Good price but not great. I'd rather buy the Apple TV alone for $79.

    • Link please

      • +2

        this is preference not reality

        • +2

Why not wish Apple pays him $79 and begs him to use the Apple TV?

  • I'd rather wait till the new model. I've got the Apple TV3 and, even though I reckon it's great for Hulu, Netflix and the odd podcast here and there - it still has problems.

Netflix's streaming quality is quite horrible actually. 7.1 update slightly improved it, though it could be a placebo effect. Hulu has great quality and so does the other streaming services, but Netflix is shite. I have the Xbox One and PS3 running off the same network and they have superb quality, so it's definitely the Apple TV.

Here's a thread about the issue:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5565870?tstart=0

Hopefully Apple will fix it soon, or in the new model.

Never seen the point of an Apple/iTunes specific media player when we have things like game consoles and actual media players.

    • Yeah, there isnt one if you have a last-gen or next-gen console.
Hell, even an OUYA would be more of a media centre.

Apple TV is a good alternative for old folks who dont have foxtel IQ though.

      • +5

Seriously an Ozbargainer and Foxtel IQ?

      • +3

Well hate to burst your bubble youngster but this 'oldie' has:

        (1) PS3 & Xbox connected up and streaming netflix, huluplus etc in the family room and games room.
        (2) 5 apple TV's set up in bedrooms and living room streaming netflix, huluplus etc.
        (3) Not had Foxtel since 2009-2010 when he worked out how to set these things up.
        (4) Has FetchTV to record any free to air that he may need plus ALL the digital entertainment channels for only $19 PM
        (5) Huluplus + Netflix + DNS redirector for only $10 PM.
        (6) Amazon streaming air played to any i-device.
        (7) Samsung TV set up for UK TV watching.

So any other wordily advice that you would care to impart?

        • +5

Can you come and set that up at my place? :)

        • Sorry Sydney is a bit too far from my house…..:)

        • +1

How to get Huluplus + Netflix + DNS redirector for only $10 PM?
          Any clues appreciated…
          -S

        • That would be $10 each per month. The DNS, perhaps $6 a month.
          ;)

    • AirPlay is a huge reason, if you have other iOS devices or a Mac.

  • Bought one of these about 1 year ago, have used it twice. Once I found out you couldnt install apps or plug in a external hdd I thought another wasted $99.

    • +2

I was the same until I set up a virtual VPN and started steaming shows from the US.

      • +3

don't need a virtual VPN just get a DNS redirecting service like getflix

        • +3

Good point, DNS redirector was what I meant. Shows the downside of doing sly OzB updates while pretending to work.

  • anyone bought this ? I just order for home delivery and in the invoice there is nothing about itunes gift card

    • I received my order this morning — no gift card, and mention of it has been removed from the website.

Dick Smith said they'll send one out to me.

      • Yes mate, I just received mine..no giftcard..need to complaint?

        • I rang them and before I finished my sentence, the girl said, "Is that for the Apple TV"? So clearly I was not the first to call. I too was told they'd post a voucher out to me and subsequently got an email confirmation of the same. Dick's done it again! At least they made it relatively pain free.

  • Also a big fan of Netflix and Hulu on my APTV's.
    Dump Foxtel!!!!!

Buy the ATV now and in a month or so when the new one comes out, put this one in the bedroom, kids room, wherever.

I also recommend getting the Roku for variety.

  • Is the $20 Card still included in this deal? I can't see it online unfortunately :(
