Trying to find a laptop under $600

I haven't bought a laptop in ages and really wouldn't know what to do or where to go. I basically need an overall laptop, mainly for work, not much heavy gaming, mainly diablo. My current laptop tends to heat up real quick causing it to shutdown so something with an awesome cooling system would be good too! Anything around the $600 mark would be ideal. Anyone have any suggestions :)

  • There are plenty of Laptop deals on here that should suit your needs. Perhaps ask the people from this link.

Seems perfect for work, just not too sure about the diablo part…

  • How old is your current laptop? Can you get it fixed or replaced under statutory warranty? Have you tried cleaning the dust out of the fans and vents?

    • my current laptop is about 3-4 years old. I tried cleaning it out which helps make it last a little longer but eventually it still overheats. I'm still somewhat happy with the laptop however, my mother needs a laptop so the goal was to give her my one and I buy a new one lol

      • Sounds like you also need to reapply some thermal paste.

  • "Not much heavy gaming" isn't particularly clear - Diablo 3 actually needs a moderately good graphics card - a 740M or higher would be my recommendation. It doesn't come down to how much you play, it comes down to what you play.

From what you've posted, you don't seem to upgrade very often, and you won't just be using it for productivity purposes, so I'm assuming you'll be using the device a fair amount. Why would you skimp on something you'll use a lot?

If it's something you'll keep for a few years, save up for an extra week or two, and get yourself something you're satisfied with, most likely around $800-$900 for something with a 740M or higher graphics card.

    • You make a lot of sense! lol. Anything you recommend in that price range? My main issue is if I'm spending around 900$ would it still come down to over heating? or do all laptops suffer from the dust that gets into it and whatnot?

Main uses for the laptop would be photoshop, diablo and internet browsing/youtube/streams. Hopefully this helps a little more!

      • Something like this Toshiba wouldn't be a terrible purchase.

Most laptops still suffer a little from dust getting in, but it really depends on the environment. I used to work as an Apple service technician, and some 5 year old macs had no dust, while some, mostly belonging to smokers, were disgustingly clogged, which caused them to overheat.
In general, though, the 4th generation Intel (Haswell) processors run a little cooler than older models.

Any laptop will work for productivity apps, media playback and web browsing, but for gaming, something like the one I suggested is ideal. The device isn't too bad for Photoshop, either, as the graphics card has dedicated memory.

        • that looks awesome! I'll most likely buy it tonight unless I should be more patient and keep searching. Or is this going to be the best go? :)

edit: NSW online says its out of stock :( I could try another website? or alternatively they have a PRO version of what you recommended for an extra $50. Not sure if there is much difference however lol

        • I wouldn't get the Pro, it has a quad core i7, which runs hotter, and no discrete graphics card. Unticks all the boxes.

        • Oh I see. Sorry to be annoying but is this the same one as the one you linked me? lol

  • I bought this Toshiba last year and it's pretty good and quite fast. Only complaints are Windows 8 and their customer service which is offshore.

  • If the only problem with your current lappy is heat, what about trying one of those cooling pads? I've never tried one (haven't needed to). They're cheap.

  • i am in the market for a new laptop too. the problem is im happy with win xp and thats what i wanna install on it.
right now i have a intel core i5 running windows 7 on it. once i chuck winxp install cd into it and try installing, a blue of screen death halts the installation after 5 minutes. im assuming it might be specific to the machine am currently using, i dont think it should be a problem insstalling windows xp on a different machine though. any thoughts?

    • That can be fixed by going to the BIOS and changing the HDD mode, usually labelled 'Serial ATA (SATA)', and changing the controller to the 'Compatibility' / 'IDE' option.

Windows XP support ends in just 9 days so you might want to rethink your choice of OS. I suggest a dual-boot setup — use Windows 7 when you need to perform online banking or shopping.
