  • how is this dslr in general? image quality good? was thinking of getting sony nex 6 prior to this

    • dpreview has pretty good reviews on cameras, here is the one for this camera http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canoneos1100D/

      • +1

and you can compare the quality to almost any other camera at any iso there also.

    • +1

Google some sample pictures taken by the Canon, you can have a better look that way.
I used to own this camera, upgraded to Canon 6D, now hopefully returning back to the 1100D.

Some of my old photos taken by 1100D — http://legitsu.deviantart.com/gallery/?offset=120
Though, these aren't straight from camera unfortunately but can somewhat give you an idea of what this camera is capable of?

      • +7

You have a 6D and are wanting to move back to an 1100D??

        • Sold the Canon 6D, no longer have it.
I don't think I can fully appreciate having the 6D. The 1100D was good enough?

      • +1

so, who's the girl holding the basketball?

      • +1

Really nice photos.. Cant believe a 1100d with the help of PS was able to produce those.. Now i feel stupid selling my entry level dslr for an enthusiast, spending more than double..

        • It's not the camera that makes a photograph. I hate it when someone sees my 5Dmkiii and says "Oh, I bet you can get some good photos with that"

        • Only the photos on the initial page were Canon 1100D, most of the ones after are on the Canon 6D.

But as epicaricacy says, its not the camera that makes the photograph.

The camera can only help so much to bring out the proper colours, exposures and sharpness. It's still controlled and managed by the photographer!

    • +4

Image quality is fine, the lens is fine.

Obviously at $300 with a lens you're making compromises. Its a great entry-level camera and I would highly recommend it to any beginner.

At $300, you can get a feel if you're going to be an Auto guy, or actually learn the features of the camera. If you're the latter within a year or two you will want to upgrade, but at least you didn't splash down a few thousand only to ever use auto.

      I went P&S > 400D -> 550D -> 550D w/ML -> 5D3 w/ ML and wouldn't regret my upgrade path. If I started on a 5D3 w/ML I,
      1) Would not have appreciated the camera nearly as much
      2) Would have become overwhelmed with the amount of features

Bottom line, get it if you have any inkling about getting in to DSLR photography

      • was thinking of getting dslr until i come across a mirror less camera..which i am kinda liking it due to its portability now.. any difference between the 2 in terms of image quality etc? i am interested to learn abt iso, aperture and stuff like tht,

        • Depends entirely on the cameras you're comparing.

      • I'd have to disagree with you on the lens quality…
I personally had noticeable increase in sharpness when I bought glass lens instead of that default plastic. Also the CA was really evident in my canvas that I printed — wasn't too happy with the CA.

        • The lens is fine for the price. Of course it's not of fantastic quality, it's entry level.
The 18-55 has glass elements… Sure it's got plastic everything else, but there isn't a default plastic lens… You just upgraded quality.

        • The casing of the lens is plastic - as is the casing of MOST lenses. The actual lens elements themselves are all glass, as are the actual lens elements in all lenses of all of them. And you could have fixed the chromatic aberration if you weren't happy with it. Nearly all lenses will produce it. The bit in this that is plastic that might be metal in more expensive lenses is where it fits the camera. That isn't going to make a difference to the IQ of your images.

      • w/ML ??

nope - got it :-) Magic Lantern

WHY MUST YOU BE ON SALE WHEN I HAVE NO MONEY :C

  • -3

PS I know a semi-professional photographer using this combination, so the potential is there. A better lens would be nice.

    • semi-professional means someone who got paid $20 to take someones 'modelling photos' once. There is potential with any camera if the photographer is good enough.

      • -1

No, the person earns serious money as a full time job. All I wanted to say that SLRs these days are pretty amazing these days and absolutely fine for beginners. "There is potential with any camera if the photographer is good enough" is not true for point and shoot, many of which are similarly priced. I wonder if the people that negged have ever taken a photo with an SLR?

  • code says not valid

  • it is valid for me

  • Hmm.. install ML on this or get a second hand 600d for a little more?
    I'm interested in video..

    • +1

IMO, 600D any day. The 600D's flip out screen is great for video.

    • The 1100d only does 720p. Otherwise, I have this with ML and think it's awesome for the money.

      • Trust me 720p is plenty… the lense quality will decide how good it looks much more than the HD resolution.

        • hmm would it look weird if I cut between 1080 and 720? or is it indistinguishable?
quality glass is not a concern for me :D

    • Sorry if a dumb question, but may I ask what ML is please?

  • I paid more for my Canon Ixus couple of years ago. Can't wait until price of the 100D comes down like this.

  • This is my 'spare' DSLR and it's a great first/beginner camera and also a great spare camera.

I see the new 1200D has removed the movable screen - why?? Makes this a better reason to get these as they are run out.

    • +1

The 1100D doesn't have a flip out movable screen.

110D is a brilliant camera to get into DSLR zone. It is easy for you to learn and master the concepts of the 'perfect exposure', if there is any that is :)

Anyways, I would recommend this camera to anyone going from point and shoot to DSLR. And remember 80% of the time it's not the camera which takes the better picture, it's the lens and the photographer.

18-55 is a good lens to start with. It is slow yes, but it will take you through your initial learning steps of a wide angle zoom and still take good pictures. Also grab the other kit lens later on to complete your range for learning about SLR techniques, the EF-S 55-250 telephoto. Again, yeah, slow lens, but it will teach you to take some unique frames which the wide angle 18-55 EFS won't.

And oh, yes, that deal is a brilliant price. :)

Some pictures from my Flickr Set where I used the EF-S 18-55 and EF-S 55-250.
    http://www.flickr.com/photos/shadowarrior/sets/7215763039606…

  • Its a starter camera, i bought this camera with twin IS lense kit( 18-55mm IS and 55mm-250mm iS) lense kit brand new back in last year July in Myer for $397 and i love it.But the body is not as robust like 70D or 7D…

  • Whats this like doing macro photos?

    • +4

I'm only learning so this can be improved 100x, this with 1100d.
      http://imgur.com/gzkNqE4

      • Is this with the same lens? Great photo.

      • What lens are you using for that besmirched?

        • I used an old pentax mount vivitar 28mm f2.8 lens reversed (reverse 52mm to eos mount $5 on ebay) with some $10 ebay extension tubes. That picture was focus stacked which means I took in this case 50+ photos of the moth. People do reverse mount macro the kit lens the 1100d comes with, I can't say if it's as good. Plenty of youtube videos on the subject.

  • How does this camera cope at night/low lighting

    • Low light not so good, Its good camera for starters but for me i am happy with the photos took from this camera, i mostly use the zoom lense

For those that are still interested Target are clearing this camera for $300 but stock is limited http://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/39370/21880/image.jpg

    • Hi unity1, which Target are they clearing it from? - I checked and they don't have any in Mandurah, WA :-(
Still available at Dick Smith, but I can't pay $328 when they were going for 295.20 yesterday :/ :P

      • +2

This one was spotted in Knox (Vic). It has since sold. I rang Target customer service and there were about 8 Target stores in metropolitan Melbourne which were showing stock, only 1s and 2s for the stores which had stock.

Best you ring Target Customer service on 1300 753 567 and ask them if any stores nearby to you have stock. Quote the product code 52588921. Good luck.

  • I got mine from Target-a single lens kit for $300 at their Runaway Bay store in mid-March (one left in a clearance bin at that store).
