$120 is not nearly enough to offset their woeful customer service, lack of branches & ATMS and absence of local staff who understand basic english. I retain an account for withdrawing cash when overseas, but outside of that, the balance sits at 1 cent.

    • lack of branches & ATMS

Yes. It is true that Citibank has VERY limited ATM and branch network of its own in Australia.

      However:

      • Citibank customers can use any Australia Post branch for deposits of cash and cheques as well as withdrawals.

      • Citibank customers can use any Westpac, Bank of Melbourne and Bank SA ATM to withdraw cash fee-free as well as obviously getting cash out at any checkout in either Coles or Woolies (no purchase required).

This means that as far as ATM network, the citibank product actually has better coverage than someone like ING Direct for example who have no affiliated ATMs which means you will be slugged with an ATM operator fee every single time unless you withdraw a minimum of $200.

With regards to the Internet Banking interface, it is terrible, no argument there! However, Citibank are upgrading their Internet Banking interface next weekend (11-13 of April) so watch this space.

I also love their mobile banking app and the fact it allows you to generate the security code through the app without having to receive it via SMS to your Australian number. That has been a true lifesaver for me when I was overseas.

Finally, as far as customer service, I do agree they are not the best and don't even come close to ING Direct's customer service for example. However, they do speak good english with a clean accent (operators are based in the Philippines, not India), operate 24/7 and have an option to contact them via reverse charges (they pick up the tab for the phone call) when you are overseas.

Personally, I use them whenever I travel overseas and will use them again as my primary transaction account as soon as I have 'milked' the ING Direct and ME Bank 5% cashback offers dry.

  • Has anyone applied for this? I applied last week and there was no email confirmation of my online application submission.

    • when i applied (close to a year ago) i didn't receive an application confirmation per se. i received an email a day later saying i needed to confirm my identity at australia post and then i received an email saying that my accounts where open about a week after that.

it wouldn't hurt to call them to check that your application has been received i suppose.

    • You should be able to track your application through this link:

      http://www.citibank.com.au/global_docs/check_app_status.htm

      • Problem is, I didn't get any email after submitting my application, and the website didn't provide any reference number. I called and they confirmed the application being made but the staff I spoke to didn't know why the status is showing as 'no decision made' on his screen.

  • I also made an application 10 days ago and verified proof at Aust Post but nothing. I called today and rep was saying I'll have to send my signature to them in post? Is it standard process?

    • i never had to do that. possibly things have changed.

    • If you've done an ID check at Australia Post, they are the ones who send the paperwork to Citibank. You don't need to do anything.

Maybe it was lost in the mail?

      • i don't think australia post send any paper work to citibank. they do it all on a computer.

        • For citibank they do and I say that from personal experience.

Citibank requires them to do something on their POS terminal and also send a hardcopy of the signed ID form to them

        • nah, they give the form you filled out straight back to you after entering your details in the computer. there isn't even a spot for the signature on the form http://www.citibank.com.au/global_docs/pdf/s21.pdf

  • So far the experience is not so good.. Applied last Sunday (4/5). Email on 5/5 with 16 digit tracking number (http://www.citibank.com.au/global_docs/check_app_status.htm requires 17 digits).

    The email says:

" After we've processed your application, we'll send you an email to let you know your account is open, or to advise next steps. For your security, your account details will be sent via post."

    Nothing since then.
