Acer Aspire E1-572 with 4th-Gen i5 CPU, 4GB RAM, 500GB Hdd $499 at MSY after Cashback

120

Im looking for a decent sub-$700 lappy and there is not a lot on offer since the dollar took a dive. This offering from MSY is at least decent when you consider for the same price a lot of the other shops will only sell you some AMD A4-5000 powered pudding box. The cpu is pretty low clocked but this pays off in terms of battery life which is pretty good for its price point. Please dont bang on in the comments about Surface Pro or the Transformer Prime, not everyone wants those. But if you can think of any other better ideas I am all ears.

  • First things first, upgrade that ram.

    • according to reviews, there is 4gb of ram in one channel and the other is empty. So it would be quite feasible to double the ram:-

      http://www.notebookcheck.net/Review-Update-Acer-Aspire-E1-57…

      • But for the penny-pinching notebook buyer, if you're looking to upgrade this laptop the first component Id be looking to replace is the 5400 RPM HDD.

Nope, sorry scrimshaw. We aint that rich to throw away computer hardware.

        • Who said anything about throw away? Buy a cheap enclosure for like $5 off ebay and use it as a portable HDD.

      • that link is for the Core i3-4010U version with full hd lcd, this appears to be the right model http://www.notebookcheck.net/Acer-Aspire-E1-572-6870.98017.0…, laptops seem to have different model numbers in different countries even when the laptop is identical, probably for stock inventory tracking.
If all you want is a Haswell cpu and not much else, Acer has you covered with this laptop, but do your research, do you want long battery life? well as usual Acer do the 'two steps forward one step back' dance with this model, they give you a Haswell cpu with longer battery life BUT only include a paltry 37whr battery for not very spectacular runtime, techreviewsource say just over 3 hours, you may be able to buy a cheaper 3rd gen cpu laptop with a larger battery for longer runtimes.

        • im referring to the one with the i5-4200U. sorry there is no direct link to the machine itself.

I have last year's version of this. Battery life is respectable (can get through 5-7 hours of typing/web browsing on power-saving settings), build quality on these low-end Acers is decent (though the screen flexes more than your local gym rats) and for over a year's usage, I haven't had one hiccup. Not too much bloatware either, and I believe you can flash the BIOS so it's not one of those crippled OEM versions.

NOTE: This laptop is eligible for $79 dollars cashback via Acer's long-standing laptop cashback offer (3rd item on the table).

(Also note: It will take around 2 months or so to process and you don't get straight-up cash but an Acer Gift Card to spend on their site.)

From previous Acer cashback offers I've received $79 in the form of an EFTPOS card for use anywhere.

Only red flag is 4 cell battery.

      • Ah okay, disregard what I said about the battery life then, the Acer Aspire I've got has a 6-cell.

From previous Acer cashback offers I've received $79 in the form of an EFTPOS card for use anywhere.

        When was that?

        • Hi I bought Aspire V5-573G-54204G50AII from MSY yesterday. Cashcard is available ANYWHERE where EFTPOS is accepted. Not really happy with 8 weeks wait time, but still a laptop with a decent spec for 599? Sold.

        • Do you find the low res/only hd and nit fhd a but low for 15"?

        • I thought the whole none fhd res business would be pretty bad before buying it but after using it for a day, it's not too bad. Liking pretty much every bit of it so far. Battery life is solid (98% left, 8hr 25min left. The ad on MSY says it lasts 6.5), light-ish weight, graphics card is okay, smoothly runs NBA 2k14. I'd recommend it as a uni laptop that can handle some gaming. It would've been a killer uni laptop if the screen size was smaller than 15" IMO.

  • I bought an Aspire V5-573G-54204G50AII, which is the exact same spec except for the graphics card (This one has GeForce 720M 2GB).It's $100 more than E1-572. So far very happy with it.

    • I'm looking at these too. I assume you bought from MSY. Did you consider the Acer V5-573G-54204G75AII (NXMCASA004)? Looks the same but bigger harddrive, and $30 cheaper. It's NOT listed as having cashback on the MSY pamplet though (whereas all the other ones are, including what you bought). However, looking at the cashback from acer, it's clearly there.

I'm just worried that there's some loophole I'm missing, ie say for example that this specific model is grey imported and not eligible or something. Anyone knows if it's possible for it to not be eligible, despite all numbers seemingly matching what Acer has cashback on?

EDIT: how are you liking the build quality? Does it feel nice and solid or not really? Considering buying one early on Saturday, so would much appreciate hearing your first impression :)

  • sad to see powerful computers now the same price as a tablet …

Any core I machines are productivity powerhouse nowadays.

If added 4 more Gb ram (3X) and a SSD (14X) it would surpass ultra books in performance under WIN 8.1

Don't ask if this is a good deal for the specs. Ask if this is a good deal for these specs on an Acer. Umm I guess they are. Although I've heard bad enough things about Acer to know better.

I feel like this is a torrent website and I have to say that it's a great rip but a horrible movie, but I'm not allowed to comment on movie.

Contrary to popular belief, HP consistently rank as having the highest failure rate in laptops.

      • +2

This article is from 2009 - right around when hp went almost exclusively with nvidia gpu's on their laptops that basically had 100% failure rate due to heat issues. Other companies also experienced issues but not to the extent of hp.

With every generation refresh almost all of the tooling/parts can be changed so its not really a measure. Not trying to defend HP as I myself have one of their faulty units but its an example of how statistics lie.

Another example is how asus comes out on top in your link. This is because they are too small a company to have any corporate customers. basically 100% of their customers are pc enthusiasts who look after their pc's. lenovo/dell who have a large corporate base would have customers who would almost actively try to destroy their laptops because its the companies and not their own.

  • And only available in-store/pickup, right? Pity, otherwise I would get one.

not sure why people keep buying these low-end Acer

my friend that work in warranty department told me that compare to other brands, they received thousands of these v3, v5, e1 faulty Acer laptop going back for warranty….all sort of complaint!

they wouldn't even consider using anything Acer….

  • They have this listed on their online shop but the price is 589 and not 599. Are they the same?

    http://www.msy.com.au/qldonline/home/8265-acer-e1-572-54204g…

  • I grabbed one of these and happy with it so far.

  • Shame that OW don't stock this (from looking on their website), could then get it for $549 - $79 = $470.

    • OW don't stock this model, but can get it in on special order. Unfortunately, special roders don't come with the price match guarantee. Thought I'd found a nice loophole for a second.
