Your stupid offers on Gumtree

Surely most of the time you try and sell something on Gumtree, someone is bound to offer you a stupid deal.

I was selling the Titanfall collectors edition and someone SMS me and offered to detail my car. Haha

A what's your story?

I was trying to sell headphones at some point. I received an email from a dude who apparently had hundreds of beats headphones that were from a shop that closed down or something. He said as bulk deal he could let it all go for a few thousand bucks ($6000 I think it was). Very casual, no biggie.

Selling an old computer I was offered $50 and a "massage" (man to man)

    • +7

Sounds like you missed out there, dude. He probably didn't even want the computer - just the man to man massage (and to give you $50 for your consenting and participating).

Maybe your old computer had a floppy disk and he was trying to get a hard disk?

    • This is one of the funniest things that I have ever read. Sunday morning, before breakfast, tears of laughter streaming down my face. Thanks skd100, you have made my day start out really well.

When I was looking for a new place to rent, I came across this ad that seems okay so I emailed and enquired. I got a great reply with awesome photos. And then they emailed me that they are out of town so I should make the payments and they'll leave me the keys. That was the SECOND time I fell for that kinda ad(by enquiring). Feel rather stupid, and then wonder how can anyone possibly fall for that. Are the scammers total knuckleheads or what?

I was selling a rug that was quite popular, so I had a few enquiries.

One woman rang me all excited and TOLD me that I could deliver it to her and she'd pay me $50. Except that she was located about 1.5hrs away. I explained that no, I was not leaving the couch (heavily pregnant) and that she could come and collect it if she was that keen. She then rang me back and told me that I could arrange a courier. Told her no, SHE could arrange a courier to come and collect it, but I was doing nothing but handing it over after getting handed money. Then she wanted me to keep it a week so that she could get someone else to come up and collect it. Told her she was most welcome to call back in a week and check if it was still available, but no way I was holding it - and that I actually had people coming round to see it that afternoon. Those people bought it. Sent her a courtesy text saying that it was sold (mainly for my sake, to get rid of her). She sent me back a text offering me more money. Sent another text re-explaining it was sold and picked up…no longer in my possession…got back another text saying she'd arrange to send up someone tomorrow and would pay the extra…ignored that text and never heard from her again.

Must be a pretty damn good rug for someone to go all lady gaga over it

  • I hate these people who trying to pretend they are poor and dont have the money to buy what they want or saying one of their kids has hole in his/her hart and want the item really really cheap to make it as a gift for the kid before surgery

I hate Gumtree but keep going back as there is nothing better. I'm not sure if its the freetardness or anonymity that makes all the tools come out of the woodworks.

I normally have the most trouble with trying to buy stuff. I enquire and they are all happy replying then I send the deadly message of "where and when can I come and have a look? I will bring cash with me" (as in i want to give you money for your item….) and one of 3 things happens
    1. I am met with silence
    2. I am told they are out of town for a few days and they will contact me
    3. I am told that they still need the item for the next few weeks and they will contact me.

1 makes me send more messages over a few days in case they didn't get it, which feels stalker like. Is it so hard to send a text back that says "item is sold". Also take the Gumtree ad down if its sold geez.

2 I wait for a message and then send one in a few days when I don't get one which is met with silence

3 wtf? Why post if you're still using it. After they fail to contact me it normally ends in silence to messages.

What happened to sellers actually wanting to sell stuff. Take my money already!!!!!

I wish Gumtree had seller and buyer ratings :(

Are spam SMS services that you can sign peoples number up to for when they act like tools?

Offered a free item. Received an SMS asking, "What's the lowest you'll take for item x?" I mumbled to myself, "It doesn't get cheaper than FREE you fool." and deleted the message.

    • Scammers often do that.

But… often people will list as "Free" and then have a list of items and their asking price for each. The bastards.

As for myself, no hassles recently. Sold an old SD STB (asked 20, took 15) and an equally old DVD player for the 25 I asked. Only problem was I forgot a disc in it — bonus for lucky buyer!

Was selling a corset. "Woman" asks for a picture. Note that the listing had ALL the details and pictures. Makes up some dumb story about being disfigured in an accident, wanted it for her guy. Keeps asking for pictures, eventually asks for pictures of me in the corset, even though I clearly stated I'm selling because the it's not my size (original seller sent wrong size). I point that out, but "she" keeps insisting, she wants a picture of me in the corset even though it doesn't fit. So I send her a picture of my very manly man roommate with it on, and ask her out. Haven't heard from her since. :P

rofl can imagine chest hair just springing out of that corset

      • Thanks, now I've got "I'm just a sweet transvestite…" stuck in my head.

  • I've just sold a coffee machine (the Dolce Gusto Genio!) and a very large dog kennel on Gumtree, with no fuss and both were local pickup. Where I live it's a limited market, but beats trying to work out postage on ebay.
After reading some of the horror stories I was all prepared for the crap offers etc, but it didn't happen.

    • Lucky you. Two items I sold last month took just 3 days from posting ads to completing both sales.

This month, three items listed for a week and not even a nibble. Not even scammers or lowballers! My prices are reasonable for nearly-new stuff, but I suppose they're specific gadgety & hobby things, so who knows?
