Cabramatta (NSW) - Are people still afraid?

Hi All,

Had an interesting chat with a few people recently, it seems some of them have never been to Cabramatta! The overall view was that it is a dangerous and violent part of Sydney that should be avoided.

I found that amazing… Cabramatta to me is a huge gem! In my humble opinion it is a very unique part of Sydney's culture and something that should be promoted and cherished. I understand that it can be pretty full on the first time, like being transported to SE Asia but Cabramatta has really cleaned up its act and shares very little with its infamous past.

A few things I love about Cabramatta:

  • Food ( Amazing variety of Vietnamese + SE Asian food)
  • Drinks (Fruit smoothies and Sugar Cane juice)
  • Groceries (cheap and fresh!)
  • Everything is CHEAP!!!

I'm curious to see other views on Cabramatta…

Have you been? if not why not?
What's your favourite things?
Anything to recommend?

Wow dude I know what you are saying but for a student on a strict budget J's aint that bad. It's a nice place where my mates and I like to go and sit for hours to catch up with a decently priced meal. I respect your opinion and all but aren't all businesses money hungry? You don't like a business and that's perfectly fine, but don't tell others to stop supporting it just because you don't please. Plus I am a cheapskate :P

      • +1

They aren't that bad! For pub grub cheap steaks, it's decent, imo. I only order my steaks medium rare, though. Any more 'done' and they turn into leather.

Cheap cuts of steak without question. But their salad dressing kinda draws me back over and over on its own lol. Damn them for making it in-house and so delicious.

The restaurant in Cabra doesn't look unclean. Are you talking about the old Cooks Hill joint? Cos that looked scummier lol.

People eat far worse food for $10 :P

        • Anyone remember Cooks Hill? They had the best steaks before they moved as J's. I can't eat the steak there anymore, not sure why. I do like the pork chops with cajun sauce! Still great value. Never too busy for me :)

    • J's Kitchen never been… might have to give it ago…

      How does it compare with:

      1/ Cooks Hill
      2/ Pine Inn Hotel (Burwood)
3/ The steak place on Chapel rd Bankstown (across-ish from the girls high school)… forgot the name…

Been to the Pine Inn quite a few times after Oztag really hits the spot! Obviously not the best quality but for $10 (now $11 :( )…

      • +1

it is 99% identical to the one in pine inn, taste, serving size

        • That 1% is suburb.

      • +2

Pine Inn and J's Kitchen are owned by the same people. Same menus and everything, but I personally haven't been to the Pine Inn myself so can't tell you if they're truly identical (considering they'd have different cooks on).

J's Kitchen is Cooks Hill. Cooks Hill $10 steak closed months ago and moved to where it now is in Cabra, known now as J's Kitchen :)

There are plenty more tables too now.

        • You're incorrect on cooks hill being closed. Still open and still the $10 steaks own by the same people from J's. And, cooks is slightly better than J's. So try out cooks! Same price!

        • Serious? Everywhere I read online had said the original owner/chef/cook/whatever packed up and moved to Cabra. Did Cooks Hill ever actually close their $10 steaks part?

I never even bothered going back to check Cooks Hill after reading all the blogger reports. I checked the Urbanspoon page for Cooks Hill too and that hasn't had a review posted since mid/late last year, which coincided with the apparent 'move' to Cabramatta, so I presumed that was further proof. (I'm scientific like that lol jk).

It's rather confusing because the leaflets at J's Kitchen only include that location and Pine Inn. No mention of Cooks Hotel. Further, on J's Facebook, they strongly deny links with any other location besides the Pine Inn.

I wonder what happened. I'll have to check out Cooks Hill again. I miss having a beer with my cheapo steak :)

    • That's another one. Redfern gets me all nervous too.

Blacktown, then Redfern. Scariest places in Sydney lol.

      • Lolwut, have you walked through Eveleigh St lately? Used walk through that area heaps when I went to uni there, sometimes at night and yes you do get a few idiots screaming and yelling but if you leave them in peace, they generally don't wanna know you either.

        • Redfern is more than Everleigh Street. Back when I was much smaller, there were plenty of cuckoos around but now it's more hipsters hanging out at the local coffee house.

    • Has getting rid of "the block" helped Redfern?

  • +2

Given how difficult it can be to find a park at Cabra sometimes, I say good riddance!!

    • You have a good point there.

      Let the scaremongering re-commence!

    • +7

Drugs everywhere. Dense collection of pharmacies.

  • -2

Whenever ive been to cabramatta its always been really bad experiences, but not for drugs or anything like that. Parking was an absolute nightmare but its like a different country, its very filthy. I find it hard to be around, being Aussie you are the od one out and i find that you arnt very welcomed. You dont get told to piss off, but the looks you get, the lack of service etc haha

Footscray is alot like cabramatta, it is very filthy. People spitting on the ground, throw whatever they want on the ground, the smell is awful, the stuff ive seen there lol crazy stuff. Alot of drunks, druggos around. This is living close to the station though. In saying that, ive never had any trouble here, just the odd people asking for money.

Its not my intention to offend anyone with this post, just my opinion and experiences from going to Cabramatta & living in footscray.

    • +15

      Aren't the Cabramatta locals Aussie?

Its a dense local CBD what do you expect

Yes because every time an ethnic person goes to a white dominate area they're welcomed with open arms.

I'd rather be looked at funny, than to be told to F off to where ever at most beach suburbs

Its look like you're choosing/looking to separate yourself rather than any factual actions of the locals.

      • -3

Not choosing to seperate myself. Going there knowing what its like, because i have many friends that rave about the restaurants is not what id call seperating myself.

Ive been to the restaurants there with my asian mates and everything is sweet. Go there with me & the misses and people ignore you, have had on several occasions, people walk into the restaurant after us, and get served before us.

When i went there i saw no aussies lol so you tell me. Im just going off what ive seen and my experiences mate

        • +3

Of courseeeeeeee these Asians are going to look at you differently. It is not very so often that they see an aussie hitting up cabramatta. But dont take it to heart. They don't have anything against you. They're not going to have this Chinese whisper, bitching stuff against you. It's not an everyday thing seeing an aussie. So it's nothing. And they like looking at eachother. So dont worry. If you want to feel welcome just casually ask for directions and interact, but do not enquire to those oldies, and I mean do not. Haha. 'No speak english'.

        • +1

It's confusing that you describe yourselves as "Aussies" but are feeling out of place eating in a place that is full of other "Aussies" having a meal. Or am I missing something?

        • +2

You make it sound like this far away isolated land where no non-asian person ever goes. It's really not that uncommon to see other ethnicities there.

        • -3

I feel you are all nitpicking at my comments. Just trying to give people an idea of what it was like for me.

Not trying to offend, Was explaining what it was like for me when visiting Cabramatta haha

z00m, by Aussies i meant we are white, going to a restaurant filled with asians.

Pyro - i dont mean its an isolated place that no non-asian person ever goes. It does feel like another country though.

        • +1

danb I can see at what you are getting at… and it's good to different perspective…

I believe some of your experiences are more cultural differences than rudeness, with regards to service at Asian restaurants in my experience you have to be quite assertive, they aren't there to cater for all your needs… only to serve you food in a efficient manner… it's not better or worse just a different way.

In fact I would say a lot of the Asian restaurants do try to cater to non-Asians however there is a language and cultural barrier to overcome, for both side, which can be perceived as rudeness. But if not for this, it could be any other normal suburb in Sydney.

The looks you get are the same looks you would get anywhere, since you are different but there is no ill will. This is one of the reasons why I have started this thread, living in a multicultural we should enjoy the benefits… more non-Asians should visit Cabramatta and vice versa.

Seeing mixed ethnicities in Cabramatta should be the norm not an exception.

        • There is a heavy mix of ethnics in Cabramatta of all colour including white… just most of those white's aren't born here.

        • +3

by Aussies i meant we are white

lol this is going to go down well

    • +18

I'm an Asian who has been living in Newcastle since I was a one year old. I get told to f off back home all the time. I was once having a hamburger at Paul's famous burger joint in Sylvania and someone next to us asked if I wanted chopsticks and soy sauce to eat it with. Didn't see any other Asians there. I asked him if he knew what the second verse of Advanced Australia Fair was. I sang it loudly to him while I enjoyed my burger and he never said another thing.

If you want to compare being stared at and being served a bit later as being not welcome, I would gladly trade my experiences with yours.

      • +11

To those who aren't aware of the second verse of our National Anthem, there is a line "For those who've come across the seas, we've boundless plains to share". Quite ironic when the anthem is such a piece of pride for Nationalists.

      • Once bogans have devolved to the point they can no longer speak we will all be better off. In the meantime they should be ignored.

    • I have experienced the being ignored/served last. It's not all shops but definately some. It's not just Vietnamese but other Nationalities as well.
Sometimes the boys get promoted in queue, I've heard some will be refused service, I think it was Turks and Lebanese can't use each others shop but I may have a wrong group.

Visited it a couple of times back in the late 90s, and it was pretty bad. Junkies all over the place, syringes on the ground, people openly slinging. Visited last year and it's almost night and day. While I never worried about getting attacked in Cabramatta even then, I wouldn't worry about parking there in 2014.

  • +3

Cabramatta is safe now. It's no longer junkie central.

The suburbs to avoid walking through are places like Punchbowl and Redfern.

  • +2

Its still junkie central, another shooting today.

  • +2

Armed Robbery last night. Still not a safe area but great food…

    https://www.police.nsw.gov.au/news/media_release_archive?sq_…

  • +14

It's actually still really bad and OPs just trying to lure us all there so he can attack us and steal our bargains!

  • +1

What about Blacktown? I have left Sydney 2 years ago and recently saw a news that Blacktown is one of the hottest seller's market. I find this very interesting as the suburb was regarded as a shit hole and to be avoided at all cost.

    • +2

crime statistics ignores that the other 95%-99% of the effected area are fine.

During to so called bad years in Cabramatta, i rem going there, considering the dense population and the availability of drugs I rarely saw crime or felt threatened.

People forget that Asian population are quite passive. Asian societies have the lowest violent crime rate.

But when it comes to the news/radio, calling out an ethnic group to generate viewers is 'cool'

    • There's something called gentrification. Redfern/Livo/Blacktown/Penriff/2770 all going through different phases of that (and different price increase).

      • -1

        lol, penriff. It's Penrith*

        • +10

          Nah, it's definitely Penriff.

        • +1

P-Town? Definitely lot of bell-ends hanging around there…

    • +2

Residential parts of Blacktown seem fine, but being around the train station when there are school kids / teenagers about is what gets me a little anxious. Some of the kids seem really… rough.

Let's just say I don't envy the police at Blacktown station on a Friday and Saturday night.

      • +1

Knew someone that lived there, had a fire extinguisher and a baseball bat ready in his car. Apparently being carjacked near the station was a real threat…

        • +3

I live in Seven Hills. I visit Blacktown frequently as it's just one suburb over. Haven't heard many stories of car jackings but there was one reported in the paper not too long ago. A woman had her car hijacked from the shopping centre car park.

It's just the train station area that seems the dodgiest. I've personally never had a problem despite getting the train to and from Blacktown, but that vibe you get from badass looking kids is one that is hard to shake lol.

  • +3

    Good Ol' Cabra….

I still remember coming to the Arcade place on the main road to play Street Fighter EX when I jigged school…hahaha and buying $2.50 pork roll from the shop next to the car park across the road from Woolies…

  • -2

The OP promoting Cabramatta for more people to go there and being rob?! Great effort!

    • +22

Who is Rob? And what's he got to do with Cabramatta?

  • been there every sundays since i could remember, never had any problems whatsoever….

  • +11

    From a local Cabra perspective:

    Positives:

    • It's just as safe as any other suburb. I've watched the SBS documentary and the drug problem is gone. If there is still a problem, then it would be on the same level as any other suburb. Plus most of the ppl that you see at Cab are actually the elderly. Not once have I ever feared for my safety.
    • Food! Food! Food! Delicious and cheap!
    • There's a million asian groceries that sell everything you could possibly want. Fresh vegies, seafood, meat, etc.
    • The atmosphere is pretty lively/friendly. Especially on weekends.

    Negatives:

    • Parking is absolutely atrocious. Plus the drivers are absolutely atrocious (I'm just going to say that it's because they're all asian. Make of that what you will). Especially the Woolies car park. Just thinking about it makes my blood boil. That's how bad it is.
    • You will see all the typical asian stereotypes. Spitting. Walking really really slow. Meeting a friend and standing in the middle talking oblivious to those around.
    • If you're not asian ppl will stare. Not in a f off way, but in a interested-you're-unique kind of way.

Overall, if you visit once in a while, then it should be alright. But personally, having lived there and going there several times a week, I hate it.

    • +1

In regards to driving, its more because its people from non Driving backgrounds, or a driving back ground that is more haphazard.

I give extra room as a general rule for ethnic drivers over 30.

Other than that, yeah Cabramatta parking has been atrocious for a long long time… speaks for its popularity.

Canly Vale the booming neighboring suburb can't handle the overload and parking there is just as bad now.

What I notice with Cabramatta is the lack of hostility, showmanship you see with a lot of young men in other suburbs ie the beach suburbs

      • +6

What the hell are "people from non Driving backgrounds"? So only white people know how to drive?

Parking at Canley Vale is fine, there's a massive car park behind Richard's On The Park and a new carpark near the oval.

        • +1

well if you came from an agrarian environment… driving would be pretty new to you… confidence is an issue, understanding knowing all the rules.

if you came from an environment where the rules of parking are haphazard, well guess what…

        • -1

Ummm everyone came from an agrarian environment mate.

if you came from an environment where the rules of parking are haphazard

          ???

  • Cabra-where? Never heard of it until now…
    I'm not being sarcastic!!

  • There are much scarier places in Oz than Cabramatta. Beside the food in Cabra is awesome!

  • +1

feel like some tan viet now… mmmmmm

    • +1

I haven't been to that one. Pass it all the time, though. How does it rate against the other joints? What dishes would you recommend from there?

      — THREAD IS NOW ABOUT VIET FOOD IN CABRA — :)

I love Phu Quoc. Pho Tau Bay is good too.

If I want bun bo hue, I get it from Dong Ba. Tried it once at Phu Quoc and was disappointed. Love how enormous the bowls are at Dong Ba, too lol.

Anyone else have suggestions of places to eat that are awesome?

When I've got a hankering for Thai, I hit up Papaya Kitchen in BKK food court. Good som tum. mmmm

      • +3

Dong Ba in Cabra sucks, the one in Bankstown is better.

        • Been there too and enjoyed it very much, but it's a bit further away from where I live than Cabra :P Otherwise, yes. My fav banh mi is in Bankstown too.

      • +2

        Phu Quoc +1

  • Wake up and smell the pho

    • +11

One day I will open up a stall in a food court and call it Pho Queue.

      teehee

      • So will you also be the owner of Thai Rant? :)

        • Considering Thai-tanic is already taken in Newtown, I guess so :(

        • -1

Out of curiosity, what do you do as a profession?

        • +2

Obviously he/she makes puns and sells them. Billionaire.

        • +2

Nah, nothing original. Thai restaurants love puns, in case you hadn't noticed. All Thaied Up, Bow Thai, Thai Phoon, Thai-riffic, Thai-tanic (above), are just a few I've seen.

        • The indentation stops after a limit. Members were playing silly buggers with indentation before your time so the devs changed it.

        • +1

Sadly, I've never seen Thai Phoid or Thai Fuss.

        • +1

I'm yet to see "Pho-nomenal" or "What's Pho Dinner?"

        • lol love the endless pho puns. Seen Pho Shizzle before, and how how I smiled.

Seen a 'Pho King' too. hah

        • +1

The owners of Pho King had no idea when they registered that name. Best decision of their life.

  • I learn went go city look for place like Cabramatta it like Brisbane Sunnybank is fav place to all friend still think i am mad.

    • is that Pho-slang?

I read it like 8 times and still dont know what he is saying

      • He's probably a bot created to post out of kilter messages and drive readers nuts.

        • It's working :(

  • +3

Well, as a person living in Redfern for my first 21 years, I deceided to move from 'one ghetto to the other' (as my partner put it haha) and moved out by myself to Cabra.

I did big poops in my pants the first few nights cus it was just too damn quiet. During the day was ok, but night time felt scary. Long story short: after living there for 2 years, it's like living in any other neighbourhood. I had walked home after several long night uni assignments in the city and never had an issue or saw an issue.

Most people there are great and my neighbours were quiet and respectful. To add on the issues that are almost completely gone such as violence and drugs: way gone from the public eye. It probably happens somewhere, but not in front of everyone. I do see a lot of police roaming the streets (sometimes on bikes and I lol) and they drive around too.

Massive lol to previous comment on Woolies parking. Not because anyone there is a particularly bad driver, it's the queueing method which is horrible. Best idea would be train it in if possible or park really far and get some exercise!

Since moving out, I wish I was still there going to Tan Viet and Pho Phuong more often :(

All in all, great culture in this suburb, I will hopefully buy property in Cabra one day!

Best pork rolls are hidden in one of the alleys (I always forget which one).
Best cheese and bacon roll is at Vinata breadshop (beside Woolies).
Best pho is at Pho Phung.
Best chicken Tan Viet hands down (I'll fight anyone who disagrees on this).

    • The alley way one is on John Street. There's a crossing that leads right into it (the side with the newsagency). They also make the best chicken rolls!

      • Yea, I know that. Problem is there are several and I always forget which one after all these years.

  • So how cheap are the foods? How much is pho, pork roll, pork rice, summer rolls, etc?

    • +1

It varies per store but not too much.

Pho can be had for about $9-10 per bowl. Pork roll I think minimum is $4 now. Don't eat the summer rolls. Tan Viet (crispy chicken place) I think is about $12 of goodness.

      • For me, personally, Tan Viet is nothing special. Mediocre…

        • Gasps

It's all personal opinion which is ok. Is there any particular place you'd recommend instead? Doesn't need to be Cabra.

      • have the banh mis gone up in price D: it's about $4 in perth atm, but a few years ago when I went to syd and melbs it was about $3-$3.50?

        • I think it's Viet Hoa (Hill Street) still sell theirs for $3-$3.50 but the quality is not even close.

        • oh :( I think there was a really nice one in melbs that had them for $3-$3.50 called Nhu Trang? I'm not entirely sure and I can't even remember the name of the store in Sydney :(

  • +1

If its safe enough for Luke Ngyuyen to be filming his cooking shows there, it must be safe =P

    • I've seen him take tours there, hilarious as if Cabramatta was a different country.

Its pretty sad indictment of people's approach to something different.

I work in a big office, I'm always trying to get people from the eastern suburbs to eat try the fruit I buy, always no or strong resistance.

The fact is the majority of Asians kids born 10-30 years ago, speak weak Asian languages at all, the majority I know converse in English when eating out in Cabramatta.

      • +1

Its pretty sad indictment of people's approach to something different.

Meh, it's just that some people like the convenience and company of a group event. Most of us will join a paid group event of some sort during our lives. I once went with a group to Nan Tien in W'gong rather than drive myself.

      • How much are these tours out of curiosity?

There is a lot of common shared knowledge with those who frequent Cabramatta, have always wonder whether putting this down in a wiki/guide would be helpful.

        • Google Gourmet Safaris. Has the prices listed depending on the area/date etc.

It's a guided tour thing that takes people around different parts of Sydney to experience different culture and food. I always see a small huddle around Cabra with the tour guide in the Gourmet Safari shirt. Once had lunch in Phu Quoc and the entire middle of the restaurant had been converted to one long shared table with a large group being taught all the foods, how to eat them, how to pronounce them, etc by their Gourmet Safari tour guide.

Was quite amusing listening while I was digging into my bun thit nuong lol. The guide had the whole group practising saying "pho" all together out loud.
