Mystery 95pt Shiraz Cabernet 2010 $180/6x Bottles ($130 w/ AMEX) +Shipping @ CrackaWines

250
AMEX

Similar to the vinomofo deals, this one is from Crackawines. This "2010 Mystery James Halliday 95 Pointer" looks like the Tyrrell's 2010 Vat 8 Hunter Shiraz Cabernet:
http://www.tyrrells.com.au/wines/2010-vat-8-shiraz-cabernet

Assuming I'm correct that it's the wine above (the listed price, rating, and drink by date all matches Halliday's review), it's currently on sale for $29.99 (+$6.95 to Sydney). This wine currently sells for $66.49 @ Dan Murphy's:
https://www.danmurphys.com.au/product/DM_763324/tyrrell-s-va…

On top of the sale price you can get a further $50 off if you have an AMEX card and using the coupon code "AMEX", dropping the price to ~$21.66/bottle:
https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/139516

The final price I paid for 6 bottles is $136.89 (including shipping to Sydney).

EDIT: Looks like it's back and still available today!

  • looks like the Tyrrell's 2010 Vat 8 Hunter Shiraz Cabernet:

Can you confirm that it is?

    • +5

It's just a guess based on the clues they give and they don't give as many clues as vinomofo, BUT there is only one wine in Halliday's guide that matches the variety, vintage, rating, price, and drink by date.

      • Plus this PDF for the 2009 vintage states $91 RRP. I think it's a pretty convincing case.

        http://www.drinkscentral.com.au/ContentFiles/Documents/Drink…

        • This is a different vintage. Price can vary hugely from year to year. Tyrells price for 2010 is $77.

        • +1

Halliday's guide is still listed as $91 for the 2010 giving them reason to list it as such and therefore giving the illusion of a bigger markdown than what it is (even if it's still pretty significant).

    • if it is, they are also selling it for $72.99 without the mystery

      https://www.crackawines.com.au/Tyrrells/2010_Tyrrells_Vat_8_…

      • and listing the RRP as $90.99…

  • Also, don't forget the 6% cashback offered from Qwibble and CashRewards

  • Wasn't a referral code was the discount code received by the referer that I don't want.

    • +2

This is not a referral, just a discount codes.

If you have an account already here are some referee codes that give $25 off $75. I won't use them.

If you take one please be decent and mark it used.

      GUWU6Z77
      SGJVCTBE
      X7JWTBE7

      • Thanks Tonka. Code SGJVCTBE used, saved $25. Tried the third code, already used.

DrAlco is on a hiding to nothing if his guess is wrong though. Lol. The last mystery was easy to track down, guess they learned? 2010 was a good year for red I believe and Halliday's a fair judge by all reports so can't be too far off the mark. As Eyebrows says below, good for speshul occasions and gifts if it's good, one-upmanship at parties etc if it's so-so, or keeping to yaself if it's excellent.

        • 2010 was a great year for SA reds in general. For Hunter Valley 2010 was decent but not an OMG year like in most of SA. Look for 2011s for Hunter Valley! ;)

        • That's interesting doc. I'm no expert but I read on the net the other day that 2011 was a poor year overall for reds, although the comment was qualified by something like "if a quality maker was prepared to release the vintage under one of its better labels then it is probably a decent drop". Don't care about the vintage as long as it hits the spot.

        • 2011 was an exceptional Hunter vintage. When people say 2011 was a write-off, they are ignoring the Hunter (as most non-sydney based wine writers and punters are prone to do). 2011 is one of the 3 best red Hunter vintages of the century so far (with 2006 and 2009 IMO), however all accounts are that 2014 will blow it out of the water. 2010 is well above average - in the next tier below. $21.67 a bottle for Vat 8, yes please!

What happens if it turns out to be rebranded two buck chuck?

  • +2

Easter Sunday, not much happening, what the heck, I'm in at $136.89
    thanks OP

  • Cheers - something to take to a fancy dinner, and a brilliant birthday present, each for the price of a bottle of pepperjack.

  • why not, also bought a case too lol

  • +3

It is 100% the Tyrrell's as I was told to look out for it by a Tyrrell's employee. Well worth $25 a bottle and much more.

  • +5

Any chance the mystery bottle is a 1959 Penfolds Grange Hermitage? :)

    • +1

      A forgettable vintage apparently.

    not available now…

    Update: it is back~

Does anyone know what happens if you enter in the Amex code but don't use an Amex card to pay? lol

Update: The transaction still went through even though I didn't use an Amex card and have been sent an invoice lol:D

    • I used the code and then promptly forgot to use my Amex and paid with Paypal. Oops. It still worked and I've received an email to let me know it's on the way. ;-)

  • Shouldn't case price $179/$136.89 be in the post title? You can't buy a single bottle

    • Changed title to reflect this.

    Hi all,

  • Just wondering, has anyone received a delivery confirmation email yet?

    • Not I.

    • As in "your order is on its way"? I got the order confirmation instantly with the following details. Given the Easter/Anzac Day holidays involved I expect it either tomorrow or next Monday.

      When will your delivery arrive?
Your order is being sent directly from our warehouse in Sydney and you should receive it within the following timeframes:
      Sydney: 2-3 business days
      Melbourne: 3-4 business days
      Brisbane: 3-4 business days
      Adelaide: 4-5 business days
      Hobart: 5-6 business days
      Perth: 5-6 business days
      Darwin: 5-7 business days
Country areas: up to 10 business days
The delivery time frames shown above not guaranteed and we ask that you allow 10 business days for your order to arrive (excluding weekends and public holidays).

      • Yeah as in "your order is on its way". The confirmation email I have, fingers crossed it does rock up tomorrow!

  • Anyone received this yet?

    • Nope. But we'll give them the benefit of the doubt given Easter and ANZAC Long weekends. Business back to usual tomorrow though so I'm hoping I at least get a shipping confirmation tomorrow.

      Will keep everyone posted though.

  • Anyone heard anything?

  • I contacted CrackaWines yesterday and received this response:

Thank you for taking the time to contact the Cracka Wines team.

Please note due to the overwhelming demand of the 2010 Mystery James Halliday 95 Pointer, we have had to transfer more stock from the winery. More is expected to arrive this week and should be dispatched within the next few days.

If you have any further enquiries, please do not hesitate to contact the Cracka Wines team.

    Cheers,

    Carlos

Got an email from them today:

Just a quick note to let you know that there's been a delay with the delivery of your Mystery James Halliday 95 Pointer wine as we had a huge run of orders and had to source some more stock from the winery.

The good news is that your order will be on the road and on its way to you tomorrow.

I guarantee you that this wine will be worth the wait…

If you'd like to have a chat you can always give us a call on 1300 272 252, or simply drop us a line here.

    Cheers,

    Angus Hughson
    Chief Wine Guy

  • Sonny - I got the same reply when I queried them on this.
Possumbly - Also got that email today.

    Let's see how we go!

  • Email this morning saying it was lodged with Aus Post - can't wait to get a confirmation from someone here on what the end result was - i.e. confirming it is the Tyrrell's Vat 8

    • +2

Yeh, "ready for despatch" - that's 2 days after the "Chief Wine Guy" said it was on it's way. I can wait but I don't like to be led up the garden path. Not happy, Cracka.

    Got mine today
As predicted by OP - is the Tyrrell's 2010 Vat 8 Hunter Shiraz Cabernet
I'll give it a try tonight

    • +2

I wouldn't suggest trying it now. Bit premature.

      • There's still 5 bottles left but :D

      • +2

I tried it at the cellar door last year, and it was starting to open up. It's sitting on 4 years now, so It will be knitting together nicely, still very primary though. Would be interesting to try one now, and then every 2-3 years until gone.

  • Yes finally received mine also this morning.
