Huawei Ascend Mate 6" Phablet Phone $320 at JB Hi-Fi

70

Huawei's giant jolly joy thing has had another price reduction, now $320 at JB. Still 399 at HN.

Not the cheapest its ever been, but still pretty good for a bricks and mortar store.

The last time it was on ozbargain was 8 months ago and it was 375 then.

  • Been at this price for a month maybe more.

  • Can an owner of one confirm whether it has 1 or 2GB of RAM.

The JB site is listing 1, but GSMArena is listing 2GB.

      Now thats phunny!

  • used it for a month. The only thing i like about this phablet is the incredible battery. Can last for 6 hours on screen

    • -6

      sarcasm?

      • +5

6 hours with screen constantly on is quite good.

    • I get more with my HAM. Absolutely love it!

what rocknrolla is saying, if you have an android phone, go to settings->battery and click screen usage it shows how long the screen has been on. These days 4 hours is average i.e s4 or last year htc one.

  • suitable for ladies with handbag

If you are after a Chinese phone, there are a LOT of better options than this for the same price. The recently announced One Plus One phone is a good example of $299 USD but with all the spec's of a Samsung Galaxy S5 including the processor (Snapdragon 801), LTE and RAM.

    • I am trying to get the 1+1, still haven't got the invite yet.

      • has anyone in australia gotten the invite? i havent heard, myself.

        • Australia is not one of the launch countries, not sure we will be invited at all.

        • They haven't sent anyone invites yet. The first people to get invites are the winners of the competition. You probably won't be able to get one till June if lucky.

        • Australia is not currently listed as a country the phone will be released in

        • You can actually get the plus one if you smash your phone

        • No. There are only 100 people who will win a phone. You have to come from one of the launch countries and there are a discrete list of phones that you have to smash.

So dont smash your phone UNTIL you know that you are going to get a 1+ 1.

You can try and put down an order to test your luck with Chinapadmall:
      http://www.chinapadmall.com/oneplus-one

They offer pretty good service from a previous order so can probably recommend this mob. No guarantees of which dates it will be out however.

      • +2

how do you place an order with chinapadmall for one plus-one?

        • True. Cant do it now but pretty sure it will go onto pre-order when they secure units for sale. If you cannot wait, theres plenty of Octa-core models out there that will still beat this Huawei on both price and performance. (eg. THL T200S, UMI X3 etc).

        • How do the Antutu scores of these Octa-cores compare to the quad-cores? Much of an increase?

        • Massive increase..

The Mediatek Quad cores 6589 does around 14k with the 6589T around 16k.
The Huawei Quad K3V2 does around 17k on this phone.
The Mediatek Octo 6592 currently does around 27k - on the level with Snapdragon 600 (Galaxy S4). The part where it is weak is the GPU (Mali 450MP4) compared to the Adreno 330. Otherwise, CPU wise it is comparable to the Snap 800 (Galaxy S5/Note3). Not bad for $300 worth of phone.
The One plus (Snap 801) will kill all these to be around the mid 30k range.

        • Wow thats excellent! My next phone will def. be an Octa-core. :D

          I'm after one with:
          -2GB RAM
          -Dual band AC wifi?
-Display between 4.5-5.5" (can fit in jeans pocket; preferably 5" as 5.5" is pushing the limit).
          -Full HD display res.
          -Under $250 if possible.

          Any suggestions?

        • You're pushing it very hard on "under $250" price tag there for a Full HD and 2GB RAM option. Those are averaging about $300 for that spec. You will need to forsake one of those to get it to around the $250 mark.
What network are you with? The bad thing about Chinese models is that they either support 850/2100 or 900/2100 and very rare to have 850/900/2100 all up for 3G. Thats the only other thing you need to worry about.

To me, the best bang for buck is:

Optus/Vodafone (900/2100) - Either the Jiayu G4S or the UMI X3 (due out any time now). The X3 has the bigger screen (5.5") and more expensive (@$290 delivered). The G4S has the smaller screen (4.7"), Cheaper ($230) but only has the 720p screen.

Telstra/Vodafone (850/2100) - THL T11S is the best choice I think as I am quite happy with the THL brand. This one only has the 720p screen, 5" screen but is only @$250.

I am looking into the Jiayu G4S at the moment myself or its slightly later Jiayu G5S (just out).

        • You will need to forsake one of those to get it to around the $250 mark.

I can live without a 1080p display as long as the res. is over 312DPI on 720p (more or less >/= retina.)
I'll need the RAM as its more useful for multitasking.

          What network are you with?

Vaya(Optus) so 900/2100 will be fine as I'm in metro area.
Can't wait till they start making phones that utilise 4G LTE bands in them.

Thanks for the suggestions! I'll have a look at those models. Jiayu G4S & THL T11S sounds good for the price (it will blow the Moto G I currently have out of the water!).

  • Too big for jeans, I have one before, it can go into the pocket but when you sit down, it is uncomfortable. Have since got a Note 3 and Note 3 is okay, don't have such issue.

Sony Xperia Z Ultra for $399 was better.

    • the camera sucks

      • Both camera sucks lol. Got some problems with several apps especially in 3D games (due to the gpu which Huawei made). Also HAM is a bit laggy and the UI is boring. The mate only shines in battery area. Ultra blows it out of the water.

  • I've had this phone for 9 months, the 2GB version. Its a good phone. If you wear tight pants or skinny jeans, this ain't for you. If you have small hands, this ain't for you. The screen, quad core processor, battery life and overall user experience make this a solid phone. I heard the 1GB version doesn't multi task very well if you have 10-15 things open, apart from that it's fine.

  • I had this phone for a week before I took it back.
Wifi was losing connection randomly and 3g/4g had terrible connection where I live even though I was with telstra and my galaxy nexus had perfect connection. They took it back as DOA and I replaced it with a note 2.
I had the 1gb version as well and can confirm what samwyze said. Multitasking with only 1gb wasn't amazing and you do start to get lag with a few apps open. Was disappointed and wouldn't buy huawei again :/

  • I'm using one of these unit, it work just great for everyday long battery life but the unit do lag at times not often. Maybe becoz my is only 1gb ram. Considering the price and the spec its good value. It has almost the same spec as "sony xperia t2 ultra RRP$499".

I only hope its upgardable to KitKat :)

  • How does it compare to Ulefone U7 posted here two weeks ago? It has 2GB of RAM and Octacore. I am actually considering Ulefone U7 if anyone has got it and care to share some feedback. Thanks.

    • Ulefone is a 7" phone compared to a 6" Huawei. As you can see from the above, the 6" is too big to fit in small or tight pockets as it is - let alone another inch worth of screen. I have this huawei and gave it to my son as a tablet replacement. :)

      • That's right it is 7" vs 6". I am sorry I didn't give context to my question. I am looking for a tablet that makes phone call rather than a big phone. So to me 6" or 7" is ok. Though if everything else is the same, I would choose 7" over 6".
