JB Hi-Fi's non-sale

I've been eyeing off the Logitech Z623 speakers for a while with JB normally retailing these for $129-$139.
Popped into a JB yesterday and thought you beauty - "30% off ticketed prices" for Logi speakers "SALE".

I noticed that the shelf ticket was removed so took it up to the counter to check, lo and behold its 30% off price is $139.30.

Upon querying it I was told they can't do 30% off the price normally seen as it would go below their cost price of $120. The regular selling price was moved back up to the RRP then the 30% off was applied.

Some may disagree however I found this rather misleading.

    I agree, I think…

I think that is illegal and you should report that to the relevant authority.

The annoying part is I was waiting for a % off sale.
My previous experiences with them have been that it's genuinely off their 'normal' selling prices.

Email The Checkout or do a video for their FU Tube segment and they might sort it out for you.

… Or throw the consumer law book at JB :)

Thanks but I doubt JB are too concerned. Interesting to see what happens to the price tomorrow.

  • Yeah, that doesn't sound right but not sure if there is much you can do.

Keep an eye out for Dick Smiths and Bing Lee. They have some decent sales on Logitech speakers.

Don't quote me on it but I think the law is something like if a item is at a price for a certain number of weeks (6 maybe) it is not the sale price anymore but actually the stores normal price. So if they then quote 30% off or whatever it should be off that price. I would suspect that jbs sales and pricing is all done at head office. It still is misleading and sucks but office works do have it for 129 which is at least a bit better.

There's a case on this (from memory - ACCC v Allens Music) which they said it needs to be at a particular price for a reasonable amount of time before they can claim it's discounted.

If not misleading (if not person error) then I would definitely say this is unethical. Hope you voiced your complaint to management; I expect you deserve an apology. Thank you for reporting this to us; certainly it makes me (as a regular JB customer) a bit more reserved in making any quick purchases from there. Good on you for doing price searches prior to purchasing; only way to go for sensible consumers. I do the same.

As can be seen it was selling for $129 in the weeks leading up to the sale when there was no 'sale' on, and even $139 prior to that.

Immediately upon the 30% off sale occuring the ticketed price has gone back up to the $199 RRP then the discount applied.

The sales chick checked their price history and said something was odd so she went and asked management who told her they'd do it for $120 but definitely not 30% off the price it was immediately before the sale.

Well, JB has conceded that 30% off the $129 price was a fair claim :)
It appears that the one day price spike to $199 on 16Apr was meant to remain in place until the sale.

"In short on the basis of our pricing policy, we believe that you were entitled to receive the 30% discount off the $129 price,

we have noted as a result of investigating your enquiry that the promotional price had inadvertently remained in place beyond April 15 (up until April 22) and therefore changed within 7 days prior to the discount offer being applied which ultimately is very unusual and something we do genuinely endeavour to avoid. In this particular circumstance we believe your grievance is reasonably warranted and regretfully our safeguard policy in respect of this issue was not implemented by the store."

Dear sir, sorry we got caught.

  • Oddly enough, it's $129 in the new Officeworks catalogue right now.
This page has it at $149.
    ?

  • That's weird. For a long time, including all this week, the OW site has had it for $129.

Not sure what's go one today with it. I'm picking mine up this weekend from JB for $90 :)
