Rolex watch investment

Has anyone invested in top end Rolex watches before? I've heard people say that genuine Rolex doesn't depreciate over time but in fact increase in value as they age.

How much profit will you get from these watches, say if I sold it off in 5-10 years time?

  • Less than if you invested in something that makes money (dividends as well as capital growth, not only capital growth), like shares.

There are occasionally asset classes like classic cars, gold bullion, coins, artwork, Rolexes that will outperform more traditional asset classes by significant margins, but it is usually difficult to tell when that will occur. Usually with cars buying in a recession leads to a tidy windfall once economic activity has picked up.

Because Rolexes are internationally tradable, they can act as a currency hedge of sorts.

  • Depends on the model really. My brother in law has a collection in safe boxes at the bank. Only time he takes it out is to trade. There is liquid market out there if your really interested. Plenty of Rolex magazines out there but i've noticed the most he trades are with Japanese collectors.

They have a healthy addiction to all things conspicuous (or possibly Velbon) goods.

Rolex's appreciating in value is a myth.

Watches are not a good investment as they will always depreciate, full stop. Even the crappiest savings account will net you more money in 5-10 years than the (negative) profit that your Rolex "investment" will make.

Rolex's depreciate, just not as quick as other watch brands. They are mass manufactured goods, despite what all the marketing might tell you. The only time they might appreciate in value is if you manage to snag one of the super rare vintage collector models, but since you're on OzBargain like the rest of us I believe those models will be quite out of your budget :P

All this also applies with the true high end watch brands like Patek Phillipe, Vacheron Constantin, IWC, Jaeger-Lecoulture, Hublot etc.

If you want to buy a high end watch, wear it and appreciate it. If your aim is to buy/sell and make a profit then you're doing it wrong and should invest elsewhere.

  • I'm sure you can make some tidy profits by trading rolex watches, as you could with teddy bears and dolls.

But I think it's safe to say to say you won't be doing that if you are asking this sort of question on ozbargain.

Sounds like you got to know what you are doing. And no offence, you obviously don't.

Probably saw a cheap $1.5k Date sitting pretty at Aceben thinking hmmm I can afford it, it's around the same price as an entry level Tag or Omega, what if I buy it and it appreciates? Win win win.

  • Like iPhones, they are popular, but do they increase as they age? Nope they get thrown out and ppl upgrade.

  • Since it's about "investment" I am moving this to Financial forums. Regarding to Rolex, please also check some of previous discussions. [#1] [#2]
