HDD for camera backups

Hi all,

Looking for a hdd that I can backup photos and videos to whilst I am on the road.

Would prefer via SD card slot or similar if such things exist otherwise wireless?

Open to any other suggestions!

Thanks for me,
Ben

You can use a portable hard drive if you have access to a computer. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/142435

If not you can get 64GB SD card for around $60.

  • Already have my 64gb cards, that's what I'm hoping to backup to the hdd.

Was also hoping for a PC free solution!

    Thanks for the response though.

    • No idea if it will work for you phone.

use an OTG memory card reader. Back it up to a 64/32gb micro sd. or even phone internal then into dropbox? or something of your choice.

If you want to move it into internal then dropbox is use an app called Dropsync. Just make sure you dont do it over cellular data.

EDIT: dont cheap out on the micro sd… write speed needs to be fast

Depends on where you are going. A cheap way to go would be to buy a cheap netbook (or borrow one off someone). They usually come with SD card slots (check before buying!), and if not, a USB SD card reader is pretty cheap to buy as well.

Backing stuff up to online storage would be pretty pricy, unless you already have some cloud storage somewhere and access to decent internet at particular accommodation?

I have just assumed that you don't want to use any cloud storage method in the mix while on the go, or maybe in the mix at all.
Further to what shadow131 said above - I was typing while he was…

You clearly want to travel light.
Do you have an Android smartphone or tab?
Is it a model that supports USB OTG? Google to check.
If your phone is rooted, does the ROM kernel you're running support USB OTG? Google to check.
Place the SD card from your camera in a small card reader that is both compatible with the capacity of your card (many don't go above 32GB) and also compatible with Linux, hence Android (not all card readers are).
Here's one that fits the bill: www.ebay.com.au/itm/281191694274
Using an USB OTG cable (under two bucks on Ebay) copy the files that you want to transfer to harddrive onto your phone's internal storage or micro card - if it takes one.
Remove card reader, plug in portable harddrive of your choice and copy files. If your portable hdd is of the Wi-Fi variety, you won't even need to plug it in.

Alternatively, if your phone does indeed have a memory card slot, you can use a micro card, in an SD adapter, in your camera.
After use, micro card can then go directly into your phone - saves the need for a card reader.

Wi-Fi enabled SD cards will also save the need for a card reader, but the above is your cheapest option to transfer files without using a laptop.

    • plug in portable harddrive of your choice and copy files

Most HDD dont work from a USB OTG. Most USB up to 8GB work above that, forget it. Not enough voltage/amps (correct me if this is the wrong reason) Better off keeping 1-2 micro SD's On top of that he will have a sd card reader anyway.

A few portables just scrape in under the usb rate and will spin-up ok and work OTG. I remember seeing a yt video of a little Seagate drive running ok while plugged into a Note 2.
On the basis of what I've read, my ruggedised Transcend would too, but I've never risked it.
On mobile - connected to a mobile or not - I would always err on the safe side and use the supplied usb y-split cable to feed it from two ports.

It's good that you mentioned the issue. Thanks.

OP, if the hdd you buy/have doesn't come with a usb y-splitter power cable, they also are available on Ebay for a couple of bucks. Use it to feed your harddrive with a lithium powerbank when you're out-and-about.

        • Any old phone battery pack will too if you got on earlier

  • I have an acer transformer tablet and with the keyboard dock it has an SD card reader and usb port. I just used that to backup all of my camera photos to a USB 2.5" HDD. If you are doing a lot of travel I would buy a 1TB SSD and put into a 2.5" enclosure so that it doesn't get damaged at all during transport.

  • I think the question is, "How deep are your pockets?":

    Hyper Drive
    NEXTO DI

  • There are plenty of photo backup solutions that will do that.
    Example:
    http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/681428-REG/Digital_Foc…
Just plug in the SD card and hit copy.

  • I got a 30gb usb photo drive with own lithium battery power. It was a $60 purchase in Singapore back in 2005. All I needed was to insert the memory cards (all sizes) and the drive would upload the images automatically. A brilliant piece at that time but nowadays the SD cards are cheap so I buy heaps and leave the photo drive at home.

  • Wow - that's a whole range of different options!

Time for some googling to look up some of the products - and terminology! USB OTG for example hopefully isn't the same as USB OMG!

Thanks everyone - and if anyone has any different suggestions please keep them coming!

    Thanks for me,
    Ben
