Telstra Prepaid phone plan?

Hi guys,

Im currently with optus, whose reception is down right crappy and non existant where i am. So i would like to switch to telstra which i know works.
However, i am a student and i know that telstra tends to be more expensive then other providers but you get what you pay for.

Is there a way i could pay around $40 a month (or less!) for unlimited texts and a chunk of data? Probably around 800mb-1gb of data? I barely make any calls… I was looking into their prepaid, but i have been post paid for my entire life and have absolutely no clue how they work… But the way i understand it is that you get credit you can spend on data packs or something? I really dont know, might have the complete wrong idea here…

Any help would be appreciated!

    • Is this still valid?
      kogan_offers? anyone is eligible?

      • I just ported from Exetel to the $20 Telechoice "Kogan" plan, and although the phone service is fine, the service from Telechoice was abysmal. Telechoice don't run the network, so all they have to do is bill you and provide service when you ring them.

So far, I'd recommend the network, but I'd strongly recommend you take your dollars somewhere else based on the service I've received.

  • Something like Boost:
Unlimited SMS, MMS, Calls and 2gb data a month for $40.
It's a reseller of Telstra's network, so much the same except you can't get 4G on it.

For Telstra Prepaid theres a few different plans but Pre-Paid Cap Encore is the best (Free Talk & Text every night from 6pm-6am to standard Australian numbers)
Recharge $30 = get $220 Cap Credit (can be used towards calls/text/PAYG data) + 400MB data.
    Recharge $40 = get $510 Cap Credit + 600MB data.

texts during 6am-6pm will come out of your cap credit at 29c each.

The good thing is you can use the recharge credit to buy data packs.

So if you recharge $30 you receive $220 cap credit, 400MB data, then you can use the $30 credit to buy 700MB data pack for $20 and 200MB data for $10 => total 1.3GB.

Or if you recharge $40 you receive $510 cap credit, 600MB data, then you can use the $40 credit to buy 2x 700MB data pack for $40 => total 2GB.

Just be aware that a purchased data pack gets used up first, before the included data. Included data doesn't roll over, whereas data packs do, so unless you're planning a huge download or whatever, it is a good idea to use up most of the included data before purchasing an additional data pack.

If you end up not having to purchase a second data pack in the month, the balance also rolls over. You need to be sure to recharge before your expiry though, or any bonus credit you still have will be forfeited.

If you dial #100# it will give you the date and time that your current recharge expires.

The only references I can find to data packs rolling over each month relate to Casual Data Packs for services other than Pre-Paid. For Telstra Pre-Paid, data packs are called Browse Plus Packs. According to the Plus Pack page, all types of Plus Packs expire in 30 days.

If you end up not having to purchase a second data pack in the month, the balance also rolls over. You need to be sure to recharge before your expiry though, or any bonus credit you still have will be forfeited.

To clarify, the only balance that can rollover with Telstra Pre-Paid is the Recharge Credit Balance (real money). All other bonuses cannot be extended and will expire regardless of the recharge date. Of course, a recharge will renew the bonuses for that offer. You probably meant to say excess recharge credit will be forfeited.

  • Can the bonus credit be used for data?

I'm going through my data pretty quickly, on this plan. Used to be able to get away with 700MB data pack a month, but now on $30 Encore, with additional 400MB, looks like I'm averaging about 53MB/day or 1.6GB a month.
