Digital Copy of Id - Identification legal?

Hey,

As we are coming into the digital age and with news of photocopies of passport on ipads allowed to board flights etc.

Just curious, is a photo of an id such as a drivers license, legal ? in the sense can be used as a form id, when being pulled over by the police, etc?

or photo of student concession cards if transit officers stop you?

Thank you

  • Official documents, licence, birth cert, results transcript, usually have a watermark that shows up when photocopied like COPY, DUPLICATE, which is not evident on original

    • Do driver licenses actually have that watermark? Never seen it before when I had to scan it.

Ive reasoned my way out of this one before a good 3 - 4 years ago, but concession card is very minor. In terms of

For driving I would assume no, for photo identification for simple form yes to a degree. Anything thats very formal probably would need the copy to be JPed

    • You've may have reasoned your way out but just got lucky, years ago I got thrown off a train because I didn't carry a concession card even though I had 5 10X daily tickets in my wallet which is over $60 worth of tickets.

Anyway, I remember that all fine print make references to the words "carry at all times". Interpret that as you will, to me that sounds like physical cards only.

  • It would only ever work if the person requesting the ID had the technology to verify the authenticity on the spot.

To answer your question a photo of ID is definitely not legal, anyone could just photoshop the picture of ID.

I'm pretty sure a large amount of people travel with a fake concession as they are ridiculously easy to reproduce and would save lots of money

    • Serious? I actually doubt this. International students (not racist or anything) but esp asians are very crafty with this type of things however, from what i see at uni and form my mate sin general, is that they all pay full adult price tickets

      • Sorry I should have been more specific. I meant Victoria public transport concession. It is just a piece of paper with a printed university stamp and photo glued on then all laminated.

        This is it

I have a legit one but you only ever flash it to them

Daily zone 1 ticket is $3.58 compared to $7.16

        • oh that is easier. NSW has some hologram sticker

    • I remember reading something in Zdnet the other day about something to do with verifying ids…

  • No.
How can one check the authenticity of the ID?

    source?

    • There was an article a while back where a guy needed to show a TSA person in the US ID and didn't have any on them, so they used their facebook profile as a credential.

  • Any copy both physical or digital can be edited, so the answer is no. You will find many stories of people being let on at the discretion of a security individual, but that is not to say it is protocol.
