SSD drive for desktop

HI I want to replace my 500gb desktop drive with a SSD. The drive i am looking at is Sata 3 just wondering its the same as Sata? (will it connect\work) And are all SSD drives 2.5inch or can you get bigger size dimension wise?

Its just speed limitations. in term of sockets it is all compatible, but an SSD for a Sata port will be a waste as it can only hit 150mb/s.

To take advantage of SSD speeds you need atleast Sata 2 imo.

SSD speeds generally read in the 350mb/s and write at about 150mb/s

Numbers can vary a bit but thats the general gist

This is incorrect, the "snappiness" benefits of SSDs have nothing to do with their sequential performance, but rather their seek times and random IOPS performance, which are many, many times better than that of HDDs.

Most if not all SSDs are 2.5in, all you need is one of those 2.5 to 3.5 inches (or the size you want) mounting brackets.

I'm no expert on that but I believe your current cabling inside your computer should work, although on my computer when I did it, I need to get a molex(legacy)to sata power cable converter. Because my computer is old.

  • Thanks for the info all

you may not even need a mounting bracket depending on your computer case, could save you a little extra money if you quickly check that

SSD's are solid state, doesn't matter which way you mount them and vibrations mean nothing to it, so you could even just place it at the bottom of the HDD cage and secure it with a bit of velcro tape or double sided tape.

    • Do you really mean to "replace" your 500GB drive? If there is room in your desktop, better to save money and get a 128GB SSD for Windows + Apps + Office Docs and use your existing 500GB for photos, video and audio.

      • Yeah that's what i plan to do. Cheers
