CNET TECHNOLOGY: Put in your chargebacks / PayPal disputes ASAP

Heads up to anyone who has ordered anything from cnet technology. Particularly if you ordered the

"Laser Surge Protector 8 Way Master Slave $15 Free Shipping Aust Wide @ Cnet Tech"

https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/138832

If you haven't received your order put in a charge back or PayPal dispute. You only have a certain amount of time to do this before its too late. I think PayPal is 45 days, my bank (Woolworths / HSBC) is also 45 days. This is fast approaching in the case of the $15 surge protector.

A user has reported that one of there bricks and mortar stores looks like its closed:

https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/141108

But either way these guys are total clowns. I got no replies to any of my emails asking where my stuff is, when I called up they said they will refund me but they never did.

P.S

Thank you which ever mod banned these guys from posting any more deals.

  • How did that chargeback go Daveaus?

    • Its a form you fill out and send it. I made the mistake of paying by credit card rather than paypal so I won't know until the bank reviews it.

      • I paid via direct deposit.

Good on you for making the thread. Hopefully we can finally get to the bottom of this.

why is paying by credit card a mistake? you get better protection. i thought chargeback periods were something like 90-180 days for visa cards

        • You are correct that you are covered if you pay by credit card. With my bank you have 45 days from when you receive the statement.

However if I had paid via Paypal it would have been a lot simpler do a dispute. I haven't done a charge back on a credit card before but I had to fill out a form and it says I get charged $10 if they don't find in my favor.

If you pay using a card via PayPal you get both protections.

Filling out forms and $10 fee for disputing a transaction? Must be a GE thing.

        • What? I just disputed a transaction on my 28 Degrees I wasn't charged $10.

        • Except doesn't Paypal tell you to get lost because you're able to claim through the card company?

        • The $10 fee is HSBC - Woolworths credit card. It only applies if they reject your claim and side with the retailer.

Paypal has always been very good about charge backs for me.

        • You claim through Paypal first. If they approve your claim you have your money back in days compared with going through your credit card company. It's only if you're over the 45 day time limit or paypal rejects your claim that you need to go through CC company.

  • I just finished requesting a chargeback, however since I paid via a Direct Deposit transfer, the return of the funds is largely dependent on the merchant themselves (though Westpac will contact the merchant to inform them directly and to the confirm if they received the funds), and there is a $25 dollar fee that your are normally charged, but they waived it in this case since the actual amount is less than $25.

Will take about 2 weeks; maybe longer.

    • Your not in a good position since you paid by Direct Deposit but hopefully if they get enough charge backs and PayPal disputes they might decide to look after there customers a bit better and send this stuff out.

As far as I understand they can only get so many charge backs before there bank chucks a fit, I think PayPal is the same.

  • So are these guys possibly in liquidation/remission or in the middle of financial troubles?

    • +1

Either that or they are just incompetent.

      • I can't remember the last time even MSY pulled some sh*t like this.

I managed to get through to the Online Store number today (after a few calls) and the incompetent & incomprehensible dipsh*t on the other line said he'd let the "Sales Department" know about the order issues and contact me back. I said if there's no chance of it being shipped in the next week I'd like a refund but all he did was apologise and said he'd let the "Sales Department" know.

Interestingly enough, the Baybrook store (which is an independent entity that is only licenced to used the Cnet logo & trademark) said they haven't been able to get in contact with the Online store either and the guy there thought they were doing "emergency renovations", whatever that means.

    • Incompetence realy. FYI The online store is the BRAYBROOK STORE!

  • If they are under administration or in liquidation, your money is as good as gone.

    • I thought paypal / visa / mastercard covers this kind of thing?

Has anyone received anything or heard from cnet at all?

  • Thanks for your reminding of this dodgy company. Just opened a dispute. Let's see what is going to happen.

  • Have opened a dispute with CC company. Mine has 60 days to make the dispute. Total no of pages for submission as the CC company requires documentation amounts to 19 pages.

    • Thats a crazy amount of paperwork for $15! Which bank are you with?

Good luck with the dispute, I haven't heard back from HSBC yet.

      • The majority is the printout from these 2 OzB posts as it is 'supporting documentation'. The form is only a 1 pager + a few pages from the emails Cnet sent about the 'updates' to the orders. Pretty simple really. I'm with Citibank. Signed up when it was posted on OzB.

  • Opened dispute with PayPal.

  • My chargeback was successful so I got my $$ back.

    Never again cnet.

    • That was bloody fast.

  • Opened a dispute last week, still got no response from dodgy company.
What am I going to do?
Does it mean my money has gone?

    • Was your dispute with paypal? If so escalate it to a claim and you shouldn't have any probs getting your $$ back.

      • Yeh. Thanks for your advice. Finally got my refund.
Buyer should be aware of this company.

  • Had a look at my CC statement and my money has been refunded. CC company didn't even contact me to tell me that the chargeback was successful.

  • Thank goodness for PayPal.
    Refund successfully prosecuted

LOL… how is this lady still in buisness

when I was working at CNET I was hounded with calls all day long about non-shipped items/orders taking over a month to deliver/people wanting refunds. I remember this one call i had to take on the first or second day. It was an order for 2x 27inch monitors that had not been shipped in over 3 weeks. I had a look on the system, it said it was "drop shipped" (supplier straight to customers house), so i told the customer to wait it out a day or two. A week later…same phone call…checked the system it said "shipped"… told the guy ill give him a call back in 30 after i find out where his screens were… After a short and brief call to the supplier i found out there was a few invoices that needed to be paid by CNET and that the supplier would not ship out any more items until the "matter" was fixed. (I later worked out that MANY suppliers were waiting on outstanding payments).

The second week i remember getting numerous calls from Telstra about payment towards the phone/internet accounts. As well as the usual calls about delayed products/refunds.

I remember this one guy who waited 3 months for a Microsoft Wireless Optical - he bought some items and the mouse, mouse wasn't in stock… the wait begins.

I also learnt that nearly all the workers there never got paid. There was this one girl who didnt get a cent of money for nearly three months, others were owed roughly a month each.

ALSO - Many products that are advertised on the website are never actually in store. Once you buy it, then they will order it for you.
